This paper presents the design and implementation of incremental backstepping (IBS) flight control laws for the attitude control and stabilization on a fixed-wing aircraft. The design consists of multiple functionalities such as command-filtered backstepping, angle of attack control and body attitude control, that are based around an incremental control inner loop that tracks the angular rates of the aircraft. The results include flight data of an integrated IBS design that validate simulation results of control laws shown previously in literature. The results show that it is possible to implement robust nonlinear flight control laws that are easy to tune and require only little knowledge about the system dynamics parameters. © 2018, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. Modern measurement technologies are commonly applied not only to monitor Cultural Heritage objects;they are also applied during archaeological excavation works, when it is important to quickly perform measurements. The paper presents multitemporal integration of different image-based (UAV, close-range digital images) and range-based technologies (Terrestrial Laser Scanning), as well as data acquired in different periods, during archaeological works performed at the Royal Castle in Warsaw, especially for the Justice Court Tower. Measurements were performed in several periods, during deep archaeological excavation works. Due to the limited access to excavations different measurement technologies were applied which allowed to perform measurements within short time. As a results, the DSM (Digital Surface Model). the point cloud and orthoimages were generated. All of the products were stored in the GIS system which will be used for the needs of archaeological and architectural analyses. © Authors 2018. CC BY 4.0 License.

Propagation of interacting diseases on multilayer networks

The study on the dynamics of interacting diseases has attracted considerable attention in recent years. This paper proposes a model for two interacting epidemics spreading concurrently on a two-layer network, where both the epidemic thresholds and the dynamics of disease outbreaks are investigated. The analytical expression of the epidemic threshold shows strong coupling between the two interacting epidemics. Moreover, two metrics, the maximum prevalence and the highest spreading speed, are proposed to describe the outbreak process. Theoretical analysis together with extensive simulations illustrate the functions of various factors, including the network topological parameters, percentage of overlapped network links, vulnerable individuals, and the reciprocity of the two diseases. It is found that the seemingly important factor, i.e., the percentage of overlapped links, possesses no effect on the propagation, while the frequently overlooked factor, i.e., the percentage of vulnerable individuals, has significant effects. For the interaction of the two diseases, the recovery state of one disease is more influential than the other in both the mutually enhanced and the mutually impaired situations.

The results of theoretical researches of construction of a eddy-current defectoscope with a coupled measuring oscillatory circuit with a transformer coupling for the quality monitoring of welding seams of metal products are presented. This device can be used in eddy-current (electromagnetic) defectoscopy for automatic and manual control of metal products in cases where it is difficult to fix the gap between the laying-in eddy-current converter (inductance coil), which contains the measuring oscillatory circuit, and the controlled surface of the ferromagnetic product. The main advantages of using coupling oscillatory circuits in the construction of resonance eddy-current defectoscopes are presented.

This paper presents a linear matrix inequality based algorithm for computation of polyhedral positive invari- ant sets for linear discrete-time systems subject to bounded state and input constraints. While the main algorithm is suitable for computation of polyhedral invariant sets of a general shape, a second algorithm specialized for symmetric sets is also presented. The results are extended to include polytopic uncertainty. Verification and demonstration of the proposed scheme is done through numerical examples. © 2018 European control Association (EUCA).

This paper describes the design, implementation and flight testing of flight control laws based on Incremental Nonlinear Dynamic Inversion (INDI). The method compares com- manded and measured accelerations to compute increments on the current control de ec- tions. This results in highly robust control solutions with respect to model uncertainties as well as changes in aircraft dynamic characteristics of failure cases during flight. At the same time, the complexity of the algorithms is similar to classical ones. The key for practical implementation is in ensuring synchronization between angular acceleration and control de ection measurements or estimates. This paper describes the design and vali- dation of manual attitude control functions for a Cessna Citation II experimental aircraft, covering control structure design, application of INDI, design optimization, robustness analyses, software implementation, ground and flight testing. For comparison, also control laws based on classical Nonlinear Dynamic Inversion were implemented and flown. The flight tests were highly successful and marked the first successful demonstration of INDI on a CS-25 certified aircraft. The flight test results proved that INDI clearly outperforms NDI and provided valuable lessons-learnt for future applications. © 2018, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. We newly propose a high-speed robotic system that can investigate running insects such as ants on a 2D space. The developed system comprises a high-speed actuator (inkjet mechanism) that can make $\pmb{100\ \mu\text{m}}$ sized droplets with a 3 m/s ejection speed using a piezoelectric actuator and a high-speed online vision sensor. The design and implementation of the system is described, and its performance was confirmed through the experiments with actual running ants. This system provides on-line investigation with high functionality that has been difficult to achieve with previous approaches and contributes towards the discovery of previously unknown functions and dynamic behaviors of insects in the bioscience fields.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a heterogeneous disease that develops through diverse pathophysiological processes and molecular mechanisms that are often specific to cell type. Here, to characterize the genetic contribution to these processes across ancestry groups, we aggregate genome-wide association study data from 2,535,601 individuals (39.7% not of European ancestry), including 428,452 cases of T2D. We identify 1,289 independent association signals at genome-wide significance (P < 5 × 10) that map to 611 loci, of which 145 loci are, to our knowledge, previously unreported. We define eight non-overlapping clusters of T2D signals that are characterized by distinct profiles of cardiometabolic trait associations. These clusters are differentially enriched for cell-type-specific regions of open chromatin, including pancreatic islets, adipocytes, endothelial cells and enteroendocrine cells. We build cluster-specific partitioned polygenic scores in a further 279,552 individuals of diverse ancestry, including 30,288 cases of T2D, and test their association with T2D-related vascular outcomes. Cluster-specific partitioned polygenic scores are associated with coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease and end-stage diabetic nephropathy across ancestry groups, highlighting the importance of obesity-related processes in the development of vascular outcomes. Our findings show the value of integrating multi-ancestry genome-wide association study data with single-cell epigenomics to disentangle the aetiological heterogeneity that drives the development and progression of T2D. This might offer a route to optimize global access to genetically informed diabetes care.

Background: Hearing loss affects access to spoken language, which can affect cognition and development, and can negatively affect social wellbeing. We present updated estimates from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study on the prevalence of hearing loss in 2019, as well as the condition's associated disability. Methods: We did systematic reviews of population-representative surveys on hearing loss prevalence from 1990 to 2019. We fitted nested meta-regression models for severity-specific prevalence, accounting for hearing aid coverage, cause, and the presence of tinnitus. We also forecasted the prevalence of hearing loss until 2050. Findings: An estimated 1·57 billion (95% uncertainty interval 1·51–1·64) people globally had hearing loss in 2019, accounting for one in five people (20·3% [19·5–21·1]). Of these, 403·3 million (357·3–449·5) people had hearing loss that was moderate or higher in severity after adjusting for hearing aid use, and 430·4 million (381·7–479·6) without adjustment. The largest number of people with moderate-to-complete hearing loss resided in the Western Pacific region (127·1 million people [112·3–142·6]). Of all people with a hearing impairment, 62·1% (60·2–63·9) were older than 50 years. The Healthcare Access and Quality (HAQ) Index explained 65·8% of the variation in national age-standardised rates of years lived with disability, because countries with a low HAQ Index had higher rates of years lived with disability. By 2050, a projected 2·45 billion (2·35–2·56) people will have hearing loss, a 56·1% (47·3–65·2) increase from 2019, despite stable age-standardised prevalence. Interpretation: As populations age, the number of people with hearing loss will increase. Interventions such as childhood screening, hearing aids, effective management of otitis media and meningitis, and cochlear implants have the potential to ameliorate this burden. China has implemented retrofitting measures in coal-fired power plants (CFPPs) to reduce air pollution through small unit shutdown (SUS), the installation of air pollution control devices (APCDs) and power generation efficiency (PGE) improvement. The reductions in highly toxic Hg emissions and their related health impacts by these measures have not been well studied. To refine mitigation options, we evaluated the health benefits of reduced Hg emissions via retrofitting measures during China's 12th Five-Year Plan by combining plant-level Hg emission inventories with the China Hg Risk Source-Tracking Model. We found that the measures reduced Hg emissions by 23.5 tons (approximately 1/5 of that from CFPPs in 2010), preventing 0.0021 points of per-foetus intelligence quotient (IQ) decrements and 114 deaths from fatal heart attacks. These benefits were dominated by CFPP shutdowns and APCD installations. Provincial health benefits were largely attributable to Hg reductions in other regions. We also demonstrated the necessity of considering human health impacts, rather than just Hg emission reductions, in selecting Hg control devices. This study also suggests that Hg control strategies should consider various factors, such as CFPP locations, population densities and trade-offs between reductions of total Hg (THg) and Hg2+.
