This paper reports a transportable system for estimating a three dimensional motion distance and making a map in the building environment. This system takes three dimensional laser reflecting points information, and integrates them to make a map in the point cloud format after the estimation of sensing position using the three dimensional motion estimation. It estimates the self-location using the information of surfaces of walls, posts and ceilings as feature of the in-building environment. We have developed the prototype system using a three dimensional scanning unit with the roundly swinging mechanism, and an posture sensor unit. The experimental results have shown the effectiveness of the three dimensional estimation of motion distance method designed for this system. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper describes a three dimensional SOKUIKI sensor module with a roundly swinging mechanism for providing three dimensional coordinate data and the corresponding light-receiving intensity data on a laser reflecting point. This sensor module scans wide viewing scanning area around itself in high speed. The auther's group had already developed and reported on the three dimensional SOKUIKI sensor module for measuring a position of the three dimensional laser reflecting point. And we have added a function for taking range and direction information and the corresponding light-receiving intensity information at the same time. We also implemented a command interface to request the three dimensional coordinate data and the light-receiving intensity data as SCIP-3D mini command system. The experimental results have shown usefulness for a wide-field range and a reflection intensity image in high speed. © 2011 IEEE.

In this paper, a complete architecture of the software defined radio receiver is proposed. First, a precise definition and the discussion of the problem is given. Next, an outline of the system topology is proposed, together with the requirements for each component of the system. Finally, a custom implementation is presented, including specifications, design considerations, and simulations.

The Common Spatial Patterns (CSP) algorithm is useful for calculating spatial filters for detecting event-related desynchronization (ERD) for use in ERD-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). However, basic CSP is a supervised algorithm suited only to two-class discrimination;it is unable to solve multiclass discrimination problems. This paper proposes a new method named the binary common spatial patterns (BCSP) algorithm to extend the basic CSP method to multi-class recognition. Our method arranges the spatial filters and Fisher classifiers in the form of a binary tree whereby N - 1 spatial filters and N - 1 Fisher classifiers are calculated for N class recognition. This is fewer than must be calculated in other methods (e.g. one-versus-rest, OVR). This makes the overall classification procedure less redundant. Simulation results show that BCSP has better performance than the OVR scheme and outperforms the three best teams in the 2008 BCI-competition. © 2011 IEEE.

The design of voltage regulators for mobile computing applications is complicated by several factors that lead to making tradeoffs between efficiency, voltage ripple and dynamic response. Careful choices must be made in selecting the passive and active components order to accommodate for the performance figures required to achieve compatibility for DVS ready processors. A suitable control scheme must be selected that can suffice the stability and dynamic response required. This paper describes the design of Buck converter that has a fuzzy controller implemented using Atmel Atmega189 RISC Based microcontroller with a choice of hardware components that will ensure better efficiency while delivering good stability and dynamic response. system simulation was carried out using MATLAB/SIMULINK. Simulation results showed that the fuzzy controller has the capability of providing response characteristics that makes it comparable with PID controllers and more suitable for implementation using microcontrollers.

This paper presents an extended probabilistic framework for reliability analysis of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for power systems. The framework is based on Probabilistic Relational Models (PRMs) and includes the analysis of both primary equipment and the supporting ICT systems. The framework also separates between the functional structure and the physical infrastructure. To be able to analyze architectural properties, such as redundancy, the framework is extended with logical gates which are based on AND and OR logic. The gates serve and important purpose when integrating the framework into an analysis tool that supports PRMs. The problem without logical gates is the dynamic sizing of the conditional probability tables which depend on the number of parent nodes. This problem is solved by using aggregation functions. The application of the extended framework is demonstrated by applying to an example system-architecture with two types of redundant configurations. © 2011 IEEE.

The dynamic behavior of rotor containing crack is a subject of particular interest and has been extensively investigated by researchers. The effects of crack on the natural frequencies and modal shapes and motion orbits of rotor systems have already been well explored by researchers. In the present study, the infl uence of crack on the transmission matrices of the rotor systems is investigated by using the FEM (finite element method) analysis and the HBM (harmonic balance method) technique. It is for the first time revealed that there are differences between the transmission matrices for the fundamental frequency components and the transmission matrices for the super-harmonic components, and the differences are mainly determined by the crack location. The results are validated by numerical experiments where the system responses of a rotor system are obtained using Runge-Kutta method. The results are of significance for the development of effective crack detection methods in practice. © 2011 IOS Press and the authors. All rights reserved.

Buildings worldwide account for nearly 40%of global energy *** biggest energy consumer in buildings is the heating,ventilation and air conditioning(HVAC)*** HVAC systems,chillers account for a major portion of the energy *** chillers in good conditions through early fault detection and diagnosis is thus a critical *** this paper,the fault detection and diagnosis for an air-cooled chiller with air coming from outside in variable flow rates is *** problem is difficult since the air-cooled chiller is operating under major uncertainties including the cooling load,and the air temperature and flow rate.A potential method to overcome the difficulty caused by the uncertainties is to perform fault detection and diagnosis based on a gray-box model with parameters regarded as *** method is developed and verified by us in another paper for a water-cooled chiller with the uncertainty of cooling *** verification used a Kalman filter to predict parameters of a gray-box model and statistical process control(SPC)for measuring and analyzing their variations for fault detection and *** gray-box model in the method,however,requires that the air temperature and flow rate be nearly *** introducing two new parameters and deleting data points with low air flow rate,the requirement can be satisfied and the method can then be applicable for an air-cooled *** simulation results show that the method with the revised model and some data points dropped improved the fault detection and diagnosis(FDD)performance *** can detect both sudden and gradual air-cooled chiller capacity degradation and sensor faults as well as their recoveries.

This paper focuses on the modeling and analysis of the basic composition, characteristic and the interactions with grid for megawatt (MW)-level large scale grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) plants. For a MW-level PV plant, numbers of inverters with relatively smaller capacity are employed to operated in parallel. When the irradiance on the large area of PV array is not equal, the output power verses the voltage of the PV array will have several peak values and affect the maximal power tracking. LCL filters are adopted for filtering the harmonics generated by inverters, but due to its inherent resonance character, additional damping strategy is required. The power quantity of harmonics and voltage fluctuation may occur when one MW-level PV plant is connected to grid. For these characteristics, with the modeling and simulation of a real MW-level PV plant, this paper proposed and verified a novel method toward MPPT of large area PV arrays. The parallel running of inverters and grid voltage fluctuation are also simulated. Finally, the interaction with the grid voltage fluctuation is explored in detail.
