This paper proposes a method to select the supplementary input signal for systems equipped with STATic synchronous COMpensators (STATCOM) to damp inter-area mode(s). Input-output observabiliy-controllability analysis, minimum singular value, right half plane zeros and relative gain array are used to assess the most appropriate supplementary input signal. The open-loop frequency of the system is shown to examine the sensitivity of the selected supplementary input signal to inter-area mode. The method is applied to select the input signal for a small power system equipped with a single STATCOM and for a large power system equipped with two STATCOMs. © 2005 IEEE.

The intention of this paper is the analysis of general concepts for preferential crystallisation with the focus on aspects of quantification. In this preliminary examination, the amino acid threonine was used as a model system. The use of on-line polarimetry in combination with on-line densimetry as well as microscopic investigation enables to obtain some indispensable information about the crystallisation kinetics. Taking these estimated values into consideration a simplified mathematical description as a first approach including a population balance model was established for the simulation of the time changes of liquid phase composition during the preferential crystallisation process. Based on this simplified model different crystalliser configurations were investtigated.

The problem of model-based condition monitoring of aero gas turbine engines is considered. Genetic algorithms are applied for the dynamic modelling of aero engines by estimating parameters of the linear reduced-order model. The use of genetic algorithms affords flexibility in the choice of performance metrics. Real engine data is used to investigate the performance genetic algorithms and this approach is compared with traditional modelling techniques used in industry.

Teleoperation technology of hydraulic general-purpose machinery was developed for land applications, particularly at disaster recovery sites. The technology level was significantly improved through practical application at disaster sites such as the Mt. Unzen-fugendake eruption in 1994 and the Usu volcano eruption in 2000. On the other hand, underwater work in harbors largely depends on divers because the scale of work is smaller and manual work is generally more appropriate. Another reason is that the special environments can lead to technological difficulties. Underwater work by divers, however, may be inefficient depending on oceanographic phenomena such as poor visibility and strong tidal currents, and it may also be unsafe because of the difficulty in perceiving and avoiding danger. In addition, long hours of underwater work can lead to a heavy physical load caused by the hydraulic pressure, placing greater demands on the worker than when working on land. In order to solve these issues, we propose the use of Augmented Reality technology for the teleoperation of underwater equipment. Using a laboratory model, we conducted controlled experiments and investigations on the reflection-force sensor mechanism. For the interface section, we fabricated a figure input unit similar in relationship to the front part of a backhoe, and conducted experiments to confirm the operational efficiency of its pointing action. This paper describes the development of an experimental land-based machine. © 2004 IEEE.

This paper presents an exoskeleton for the assist of forearm motion (elbow flexion-extension and forearm pronationsupination motion) in daily activity and rehabilitation. The exoskeleton is controlled based on the activation patterns of the electromyogram (EMG) signals of the patient's muscles, which directly reflects the motion intention of the patient, in order to realize natural motion assist The sophisticated real-time neurofuzzy control method, in which the effect of a muscle common to both motions is taken into account, is proposed. The proposed control method enables the cooperative motion of elbow and forearm of the patient by learning the muscle activation patterns of each patient. The effectiveness of the proposed method was evaluated by experiment.

This work describes an attempt to develop a real-life application for transforming the appearance of a person's face to give a more favorable impression. Face images are first represented as high-dimensional vectors by separating the shape and texture information, and variations in the appearance of face images are coded by applying principal component analysis to a set of various face images. The relationship between the coded representation and the impression of corresponding images is analyzed, and an impression transfer vector is defined by the Fisher's linear discriminant obtained from a number of training images previously categorized into two opposing classes for a given impression dimension. An image manipulation method for transforming impressions is proposed which shifts the projection of the input image in the parameter space by an arbitrary magnitude of the impression transfer vector. Experimental results for impression transformations of both age and gender dimensions showed that the method proposed for face image manipulation is an effective one.

In this paper, the TCP retransmission timer adjustment mechanism is approached from the system's theoretic point of view. TCP uses a simple recursive system identification algorithm to capture both time variant and time invariant Internet behavior and provides a dynamic round-trip time (RTT) predictor. Based on real Internet data collection, it is observed that when the retransmission timer is adjusted by using the proposed predictor instead of the traditional RTT estimator, its performance increases significantly.

Most people report finding it difficult to recognize the faces of people of other races, a phenomenon known as other-race effect, in face perception. If this tendency is also shown by automatic face identification systems, it might pose a type of racial problem for systems that are being widely introduced to security applications on a global scale, such as use for passport control at international airports. Armed with an awareness of this potential problem faced by biometric authentication systems, we investigated whether two major classical schemes for image representation in face recognition, i.e. Eigenface and GaborJet, show different racial effects in terms of verification error on alien subjects. Results indicate that, contrary to general understanding, Eigenface may outperform GaborJet when faces could be either Japanese or non-Japanese.

In this paper an application of genetic algorithms for on-line multi-objective optimisation is considered. Two different multi-objective evolutionary computational techniques are implemented for optimal selection of gas turbine engine real-time model structure. The real engine data was used for identification and optimisation of the engine model parameters. The results of genetic algorithm application for engine model on-line optimisation are discussed.

The objective of this paper is to investigate the method which can assess accurately and efficiently the effects of excitation systems on transient stability of power systems. At first, critical fault clearing time functions CCT(W:load) are defined by taking notice of the fact that transient stability is mainly controlled by fault clearing time and load. Next, the method to be enable to assess accurately and efficiently the effects of excitation systems on transient stability has been newly developed by using the above functions. Finally, it has been applied to the effect assessment in the occurrence of a three- phase fault in a model power system. Results of application have been clarified the effectiveness of the developed method.
