The increasing global energy demands highlight the need for improved energy management systems in smart buildings. Traditional systems are inadequate in resolving the dynamic interplay between energy consumption and occupant comfort due to their inability to adapt to the dynamic nature of occupancy. The main goal of this research is to use dynamic occupancy data to optimize energy consumption. This research introduces a solution that is African Vulture Optimization Algorithm (AVOA) based Dynamic Occupant Adaptive Energy Management System. The adoption of AVOA resulted in a significant reduction in energy consumption, with a median consumption drop of 329.39 kWhr from a baseline of non-optimized 938.08 kWhr. More specifically, the implementation of AVOA showed an average improvement in energy gain to 0.9940, demonstrating the effectiveness of the system in improving energy efficiency while maintaining occupant comfort. This research proposes an integrated approach that balances energy efficiency with the well-being of its occupants, so contributing to the broader targets of sustainable urban development © 2024 IEEE.

Review of dehazing techniques: challenges and future trends

The phenomenon of atmospheric haze arises due to the scattering of light by minute particles suspended in the atmosphere. This optical effect gives rise to visual degradation in images and videos. The degradation is primarily influenced by two key factors: atmospheric attenuation and scattered light. Scattered light causes an image to be veiled in a whitish veil, while attenuation diminishes the image inherent contrast. Efforts to enhance image and video quality necessitate the development of dehazing techniques capable of mitigating the adverse impact of haze. This scholarly endeavor presents a comprehensive survey of recent advancements in the domain of dehazing techniques, encompassing both conventional methodologies and those founded on machine learning principles. Traditional dehazing techniques leverage a haze model to deduce a dehazed rendition of an image or frame. In contrast, learning-based techniques employ sophisticated mechanisms such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and different deep Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) to create models that can discern dehazed representations by learning intricate parameters like transmission maps, atmospheric light conditions, or their combined effects. Furthermore, some learning-based approaches facilitate the direct generation of dehazed outputs from hazy inputs by assimilating the non-linear mapping between the two. This review study delves into a comprehensive examination of datasets utilized within learning-based dehazing methodologies, elucidating their characteristics and relevance. Furthermore, a systematic exposition of the merits and demerits inherent in distinct dehazing techniques is presented. The discourse culminates in the synthesis of the primary quandaries and challenges confronted by prevailing dehazing techniques. The assessment of dehazed image and frame quality is facilitated through the application of rigorous evaluation metrics, a discussion of which is incorporated. To provide empiri

Decentralized control in active distribution grids via supervised and reinforcement learning

While moving towards a low-carbon, sustainable electricity system, distribution networks are expected to host a large share of distributed generators, such as photovoltaic units and wind turbines. These inverter-based resources are intermittent, but also controllable, and are expected to amplify the role of distribution networks together with other distributed energy resources, such as storage systems and controllable loads. The available control methods for these resources are typically categorized based on the available communication network into centralized, distributed, and decentralized or local. Standard local schemes are typically inefficient, whereas centralized approaches show implementation and cost concerns. This paper focuses on optimized decentralized control of distributed generators via supervised and reinforcement learning. We present existing state-of-the-art decentralized control schemes based on supervised learning, propose a new reinforcement learning scheme based on deep deterministic policy gradient, and compare the behavior of both decentralized and centralized methods in terms of computational effort, scalability, privacy awareness, ability to consider constraints, and overall optimality. We evaluate the performance of the examined schemes on a benchmark European low voltage test system. The results show that both supervised learning and reinforcement learning schemes effectively mitigate the operational issues faced by the distribution network.

Machine-to-machine (M2M) communication plays a fundamental role in autonomous IoT (Internet of Things)-based infrastructure, a vital part of the fourth industrial revolution. Machine-type communication devices(MTCDs) regularly share extensive data without human intervention while making all types of decisions. Thesedecisions may involve controlling sensitive ventilation systems maintaining uniform temperature, live heartbeatmonitoring, and several different alert systems. Many of these devices simultaneously share data to form anautomated system. The data shared between machine-type communication devices (MTCDs) is prone to risk dueto limited computational power, internal memory, and energy capacity. Therefore, securing the data and devicesbecomes challenging due to factors such as dynamic operational environments, remoteness, harsh conditions,and areas where human physical access is difficult. One of the crucial parts of securing MTCDs and data isauthentication, where each devicemust be verified before data transmission. SeveralM2Mauthentication schemeshave been proposed in the literature, however, the literature lacks a comprehensive overview of current M2Mauthentication techniques and the challenges associated with them. To utilize a suitable authentication schemefor specific scenarios, it is important to understand the challenges associated with it. Therefore, this article fillsthis gap by reviewing the state-of-the-art research on authentication schemes in MTCDs specifically concerningapplication categories, security provisions, and performance efficiency.

Stability Investigation and Improvement for DC Cascade systems with Simplified Impedance-based Stability Criterion

In DC distributed power systems(DPSs),the complex impedance interactions possibly lead to DC bus voltage oscillation or *** previous research,the stability analysis of DPSs is implemented based on mathematical analysis in control *** specific mechanisms of the instability of the cascade system have not been intuitively *** this paper,the stability analysis of DPSs based on the traditional Nyquist criterion is simplified to the resonance analysis of the seriesconnected port impedance(Z=R+jX)of source and load *** reveals that the essential reason for impedance instability of a DC cascade system is that the negative damping characteristic(R<0)of the port the overall impedance amplifies the internal resonance source at reactance zero-crossing *** simplified stability criterion for DC cascade systems can be concluded as:in the negative damping frequency ranges(R<0),there exists no zero-crossing point of the reactance component(i.e.,X=0).According to the proposed stability criterion,the oscillation modes of cascade systems are classified.A typical one is the internal impedance instability excited by the negative damping,and the other one is that the external disturbance amplified by negativity in a low stability ***,the impedance reshaping method for stability improvement of the system can be further *** validity of the simplified criterion is verified theoretically and experimentally by a positive damping reshaping method.

The hardware and software of a computer are controlled by its operating system (OS), which performs essential tasks such as input and output processing, file and memory management, and the management of peripheral devices such as disk drives and printers. Application software refers to programs designed for specific purposes, these applications, often freely available and open source, contribute to the rising number of downloads. In the third quarter of 2022, combined downloads from the Apple App Store and Google Play Reached an estimated 35.3 billion. However, the prevalence of insecurity in these applications and technologies heightens the potential for cybercrimes. Protection against unauthorized intruders is crucial in identifying malicious applications. Machine learning (ML) serves as a promising avenue for detecting malware attacks, offering potential solutions to bolster cybersecurity measures. We propose a novel approach utilizing ML to enhance malware detection accuracy by segmenting datasets into distinct groups. Our research employs supervised ML techniques on the CICMaldroid2020 dataset, which includes comprehensive information such as intent actions, permissions, and sensitive APIs. The dataset was partitioned into four groups, each containing 150 features, and analyzed across four experiments to distinguish between attack and benign classes. Our proposed model demonstrated exceptional performance, with the random forest algorithm achieving an accuracy of 98.6% and a precision of 98.75%. These results highlight the effectiveness of our segmentation approach and its significant contribution to advancing malware detection in Android applications, offering a promising direction for future cybersecurity solutions. © 2024 by the authors of this article.

A New Approach to Determine Feasible Operating Region of Unbalanced Distribution Networks With Distributed Photovoltaics

Amidst rising distributed generation and its potential role in grid management, this article presents a new realistic approach to determine the operational space and flexibility potential of an unbalanced active distribution network. The feasible operating region of an active distribution network is constituted by its range of active-reactive power exchanges with the bulk power system without breaching network constraints. This study explores the potential of highly penetrated single- and three-phase distributed photovoltaics and voltage-sensitive loads to determine the feasible operating region at different operating points. The cumulative response of Volt-Var controlled distributed photovoltaics and voltage-sensitive loads determines the power flow at the bulk power system-active distribution network interconnection, ensuring feasibility with respect to voltage magnitude and unbalance constraints. Further, the correspondence of feasible operating region with the tap-settings of substation transformer enables a novel feature to traverse throughout the available operating region and facilitate bulk power system-active distribution network power coordination. Additionally, a nodal sensitivity-based adjustable Volt-Var control scheme is proposed for distributed photovoltaics, improving the feasible operating region. The proposed strategy is validated on bulk power system-active distribution network integrated test system. Privacy-preserving k-nearest neighbor (PPkNN) classification for multiple clouds enables categorizing queried data into a class in keeping with data privacy, where the database and key servers jointly perform cryptographic operations. The existing solutions, unfortunately, take a long time and incur a large amount of traffic between the database and key servers. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a fast and secure kNN classification protocol, namely FSkNN, over distributed databases deployed in multiple clouds under the semi-honest model. Particularly, we focus on optimizing the network-related operations during kNN classification. That is, the proposed cryptographic protocol reduces the number of interactions between the servers by using a fully homomorphic encryption scheme and eliminates unnecessary traffic by applying mathematical techniques. In addition, the indistinguishability-based security of FSkNN is proven. We implemented FSkNN with C++ and the testbed experiments demonstrate that the proposed scheme significantly facilitates the query response time and reduces the communication cost. © 2013 IEEE.

The recent development of channel technology has promised to reduce the transaction verification time in blockchain *** transactions are transmitted through the channels created by nodes,the nodes need to cooperate with each *** one party refuses to do so,the channel is unstable.A stable channel is thus *** nodes may show uncooperative behavior,they may have a negative impact on the stability of such *** order to address this issue,this work proposes a dynamic evolutionary game model based on node *** model considers various defense strategies'cost and attack success ratio under *** can dynamically adjust their strategies according to the behavior of attackers to achieve their effective *** equilibrium stability of the proposed model can be *** proposed model can be applied to general channel *** is compared with two state-of-the-art blockchain channels:Lightning network and Spirit *** experimental results show that the proposed model can be used to improve a channel's stability and keep it in a good cooperative stable *** its use enables a blockchain to enjoy higher transaction success ratio and lower transaction transmission delay than the use of its two peers.
