Academic Performance and Perceived Employability of Graduate Students in Business and Management – An Analysis of Nationwide Graduate Destination Survey

Employability denotes skills and attributes that make an individual desirable to potential employers. Owing to the dramatic increase in enrollment rate of higher education, a diploma is no longer a guarantee of employment and higher education institutes are expected to equip students with employability skills and attributes. However, the mandatory inclusion of employability skills and attributes in higher education has provoked considerable debate and controversy. Although the connection between employability and employment is well-documented, it is not clear whether employability skills have potential impacts on academic performance of graduate students. This study investigated the relationship between academic publication and perceived employability of graduate students in business and management by analyzing data from Graduate Destination Survey (GDS) in Taiwan. Of the 6,876 graduate students in business and management responding to the survey, 2,015 (29.3%) and 508 (7.4%) of them submitted at least one conference paper or peer-reviewed journal article, respectively. Logistic regression was used to evaluate the associations between paper/article submission and perceived employability of graduate students, controlled for student attributes. The findings suggest that 4 employability skills are significantly associated with academic publication of graduate students, including “foreign language ability”, “computer literacy”, “application of theory to work”, and “stability and pressure resistance”. All control factors, including “school type”, “gender”, “entrance exam for graduate school”, “years in graduate school”, “full-time student”, and “participation in academic community”, have significantly connection with academic publication. With the advent of a knowledge-based economy, innovation can be regarded as a series of process of knowledge production, use and dissemination. Creativity is the source of innovation. The cultivation of creativity and innovative capability is a means to develop and strengthen higher education and cultivate human resource that the society needs. Positive psychology is a factor to elevate competition among higher education institutions, and it can assist college students to improve their knowledge, potential and contribution. This study developed creative courses for sophomore students in a university of science and technology in central Taiwan(187 students in total). According to the score of the "positive traits scale", this study took the first 60 students of positive traits as the experiment group and the last 60 of negative traits as the control group. The results showed that the total creativity score of students of positive traits is significantly better than the control group students. It is evident that the creative course has a direct effect on students' creativity. It is suggested that universities should continue to promote creative course to improve student's competence.

In recent years, owing to the development of mobile devices, people can use social media more conveniently. This new trend of media drastically changes people’s lives, especially among adolescents. Earlier researches suggested it benefits their learning performance but also contains the risk of addiction. This research thus investigated the relationship between the usage of social media and the academic achievement of college students, and whether this would be different among students with the various locus of control. There was a total of 298 students participated in this research. The results are as follows: (1) External locus of control on expanding one’s conduct grade has several significant positive effects. (2) External locus of control on expressing the usage of social media has several significant positive effects. (3) Conduct grade was directly affected by External locus of control, this connection was the full mediation by the use time of social media. Last but not least, we have some suggestions for teachers, parents, and schools. Since using social media is essential for modern life, the following rise and problems from using social media applications or websites exist too. However, social media should not take the blame entirely. It all depends on how you use it. We should teach students to control themselves and use the right way to get better academic results, rather than getting rid of mobile phones and removing social media applications from their mobile phones. We hope that we can find the proper solutions in the future by having more in-depth research and avoid students’ abuse of social media and improve academic achievement. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019.

Low temperature chilling damage is one of the most serious disasters in maize production,which is a typical non-linear complex issue with numerous influencing factors and strong *** to predict it is not only a hot theoretical research topic,but also an urgent practical problem to be ***,most of the current researches are focusing on post-disaster static descriptive assessment rather than pre-disaster dynamic predictive analysis,resulting in the problems such as no indicative result and low *** this study,the satisfaction rate of environmental accumulated temperature for maize production was used to measure the chilling damage risk,and a model for maize chilling damage risk prediction based on probabilistic neural network was *** model was composed of input layer,pattern layer,summation layer and output *** obtained results showed that the prediction accuracy for the most serious risk level was as high as 0.91,and the rates of the Type I Error and Type II Error made by the model were 0.1 and 0.09,*** indicated that the model employed was promising with good *** results of this research are of both theoretical significance for providing a new reference method of pre-disaster prediction to study maize chilling disaster risk and practical significance for reducing maize production risk and ensuring yield safety.

Milk is a universal food that is widely consumed around the world irrespective of age. It has a complex matrix consisting of proteins, carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins, and enzymes that have successfully retained the interest of researchers as yet. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of low-temperature long-time (LTLT), ultraviolet light (UV), and ultrasound (US) treatments on physicochemical properties, microbial count, and fatty acid profiling of three types of bovine milk – Country (C), Jersey (J), and Holstein Friesian (HF). The study was conducted in southern India, where these three types of milk are commonly consumed. It was found that no significant (p ˂ 0.05) differences in the proximate composition of milk samples subjected to different treatments compared to untreated milk. However, LTLT treatment resulted in a reduction in ascorbic acid content and significant changes in antioxidant activity and lactose content. LTLT treatment was also able to kill the pathogenic bacteria E. coli, whereas UV and US treatment only showed a notable reduction in the E. coli count. Fatty acid profiling of the treated milk samples was done using GC/MS, and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) was performed to study the types of chemical bonds present. The results showed that non-thermal treatments (UV and US) were able to sustain the chemical characteristics of milk and had potential for implementation in the dairy industry. Overall, the study highlights the potential benefits of non-thermal treatments such as UV and US in maintaining the chemical properties of milk and reducing pathogenic bacteria count. The findings could be useful in the dairy industry to ensure the safety and quality of milk. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.

China has been actively reducing anthropogenic air pollutant emissions over the past decade and is about to embark on the next phase of air quality management. Carbon monoxide (CO) is an ideal indicator of primary pollutants from combustion sources. A comprehensive assessment of the current situation of anthropogenic CO emissions can inform the implementation of future reduction policies. This work aims to determine the changes of anthropogenic CO emissions in mainland China from 2014 to 2020 at 0.2° × 0.2° spatial resolution. Hourly CO observations from over 1,600 national control sites were combined with Lagrangian dispersion modeling and multisectoral emission inventories in a Bayesian inversion framework, to determine monthly CO emissions. From 2014 to 2020, the average annual anthropogenic CO emission in mainland China was 473.6 ± 117.2 Tg a −1 , which is 2.5 times higher than the prior emission. Northwest China stands out as the most underestimated region with a relative difference of an astonishing 6.3 times between prior and posterior emissions. The emissions generally decreased by 32.0% from 2014 to 2020, but with a clear rebound in 2017 and 2018, and Yunnan in the southwest and Xinjiang in the northwest are the most pronounced rebound provinces. Optimizing the management of direct emissions in the future requires not only focusing on key urban agglomerations but also strengthening controls in remote provinces. In this paper, we introduced geometric algebra to develop a new multisource multisink optimal evacuation route planning method. A dynamically updatable data structure and a matrix-based greedy searching algorithm were developed to support the dynamic evacuation route searching for multiple evacuees. Unlike most existing methods, which iteratively search the optimal path for each evacuee, our method can search all the possible evacuation routes synchronously. The dynamic updating of the network topography, weights, and constraints during the route searching is direct and flexible, thus can support the evacuation in dynamic cases. The method is demonstrated and tested by an evacuation case in the city of Changzhou, China. The simulation experiments suggest that the method can well support the dynamic route searching in large scales with dynamic weight changes. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Exploring the Mediator in Science Service Learning: Analysis of University Students’ Behavioural Intention to Use Digital Platforms

This study examined two mediators of university students’ behavioural intention to use digital platforms in the context of science service learning in Taiwanese universities. Based on the technology acceptance model (TAM), we proposed two cognitive variables as antecedents, self-efficacy and science trust, to verify their influences on students’ behavioural intention. We further investigated two mediators, perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use, to examine to what extent they had effects on students’ intention. Questionnaire data were collected from 282 university students who participated in a science service project. A structural equation model (SEM) procedure was used to test the direct and indirect relationships between the variables. The results showed that both self-efficacy and science trust had direct influences on perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use. The two mediators also had direct effects on students’ behavioural intention. Nevertheless, as a mediating variable, only perceived ease of use effectively mediated the relationships between both self-efficacy and science trust and students’ behavioural intention. Findings of this research could provide some suggestions to enhance students’ behavioural intention for institutions where science service learning is a required project/programme.
