“Never the same again”: A descriptive qualitative inquiry into postpartum experiences of first-time mothers in the Oti Region of Ghana

Background: The postpartum period is a crucial yet often neglected stage of childbirth in Ghana. Cultural expectations and societal norms often lead some women—especially first-time mothers with no prior experience—to focus more on childbirth as a significant life event, while their postpartum well-being remains overlooked. However, childbirth often brings physical, emotional, social, and psychological changes that need to be carefully managed for the greater well-being of the mother and child. Aim: This study investigates the postpartum experiences of first-time mothers in the Oti Region of Ghana with the Biopsychosocial Model as its theoretical foundation. Methods: Achored on qualitative methods, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 25 first-time mothers to explore themes such as physical health challenges, psychological distress, and social support during postpartum. Findings: Diverse postpartum experiences were established among the first-time mothers, which highlight the pivotal roles of spousal, familial, and healthcare support in shaping maternal well-being during this critical post-childbirth period. Specifically, these supportive resources helped these first-time mothers through physical health, psychological, emotional, neurological, and sensory issues. However, these social support systems were uneven, thereby creating differential postpartum experiences. Conclusion: Our findings highlight the need for policy and interventions to enhance comprehensive access to postpartum care, address healthcare delivery gaps, and promote culturally sensitive maternal health services. Healthcare providers must therefore adopt holistic care strategies that covers the physical, emotional, and social dimensions of postpartum health. These should include follow-ups, mental health screenings, and personalized postpartum education, and care. Subspace clustering is a fundamental task in machine learning, particularly for high-dimensional datasets where the goal is to group data points that lie in distinct subspaces. Traditional methods, such as Sparse Subspace Clustering (SSC) and Low-Rank Representation (LRR), have demonstrated good performance but often suffer from high computational costs, particularly when applied to large-scale data. To address these limitations, this paper introduces a novel technique called Purity Kernel Tensor Learning (PKTL). PKTL combines the power of tensor decomposition with a purity kernel function to improve both the efficiency and effectiveness of subspace clustering. By utilizing tensor-based representations, the method captures higher-order relationships in the data, allowing for a more robust clustering process. The purity kernel function measures the coherence within the clusters, enhancing the identification of subspaces in complex datasets. The proposed approach not only reduces computational complexity but also improves the clustering accuracy compared to existing methods. Experiments on synthetic and real-world datasets, including ORL, Yale, and MNIST, show that PKTL outperforms conventional subspace clustering algorithms, both in terms of clustering accuracy and scalability. The results demonstrate the potential of PKTL in handling large datasets while maintaining high performance, making it a promising approach for scalable subspace clustering in real-world applications.

The role of learning style in engineering design thinking via project-based STEM course

Engineering design thinking is at the core of engineering competence. Project-Based learning (PjBL) about Science, technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), which is based on engineering design, has brought enormous success in students’ gaining and applying knowledge about STEM subjects. However, there are few studies on the perceived improvement in engineering design thinking and the possible role that learning style (LS) plays. We implemented PjBL-STEM classes to enable students to design and build a water tower using a truss tower structure that can withstand earthquakes. Constraints such as height, load weight, tower weight, and degree of earthquake withstanding were included. A total of 137 Taiwanese students participated in this course and employed a Gregorc learning style delineator to determine their learning preferences. A pre-test and post-test on perceived engineering design thinking performance was also undertaken. Students demonstrated significant improvements in their perceived engineering design thinking. Additionally, abstract-type learners had greater perceived improvement than concrete-type learners from the PjBL-STEM course. We suggest that different pedagogical methods should be utilized to provide equal opportunities for each student. © 2021 National Institute of Education, Singapore.

Effects of virtual reality on creative design performance and creative experiential learning

This study investigated the effects of teaching via virtual reality (VR) on creative design performance and creative experiential learning processes by using a pretest–post-test nonequivalent group design to sample 138 seventh graders from a junior high school in Taipei City. The main conclusions from this study are: (1) VR has significant positive effects on creative design processes, particularly in the design and planning, testing and revision and thoughts and appreciation stages. (2) VR has significant positive effects on creative design outcomes, with high- and low-level effects on creative design and functional appropriateness, respectively. (3) The learning process for VR and creative experiential learning shifts from concrete experiences to reflective observations, abstract conceptualization and, finally, innovative applications. Behaviors of reflective observation and innovative application are active and vital to the performance of creative processes and outcomes. © 2020 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

Evapotranspiration(ET)is of great significance for the ecological environment and water resource utilization in arid and semi-arid *** Mongolian Plateau,owing to drought,low rainfall,and extremely uneven distribution of water resources,has a typical temperate continental climate.A refined understanding of the spatiotemporal distribution of ET in this region will help in establishing regulatory strategies for climate change responses,regional livestock regulation,and grassland degradation *** this study,meteorological station data,precipitation data,and the Penman-Monteith model were used to study the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of actual ET over the Mongolian Plateau from 2011 to *** found that:(1)The spatial distribution of ET in the Mongolian Plateau showed a high trend in the north and east and a low trend in the middle and *** was a significant difference in the regional annual ET,with the highest ET reaching over 500 mm and the lowest being only approximately 70 mm.(2)The annual ET values in 2013,2018,and 2019 were relatively large,varying between 80 and 500 mm,and the overall ET of the Mongolian Plateau first decreased,then increased,and then decreased.(3)The temporal distribution exhibits a unimodal trend of increasing and then decreasing,with July being the turning ***-September was a period of high ET,with the highest ET exceeding 100 *** vegetation coverage was high,precipitation was abundant,and the vegetation ET effect was *** was a period of low ET,with a maximum ET of approximately 10 mm in January and December;the ET for the month with the lowest value was approximately *** quantitative inversion method proposed in this study can provide method and data support for north and central Asia,and other large arid and semi-arid areas.

Comparing job applicant deception in asynchronous vs synchronous video interviews, with and without AI-assisted assessments

Purpose: Asynchronous Video Interviews (AVIs) incorporating Artificial Intelligence (AI)-assisted assessment has become popular as a pre-employment screening method. The extent to which applicants engage in deceptive impression management (IM) behaviors during these interviews remains uncertain. Furthermore, the accuracy of human detection in identifying such deceptive IM behaviors is limited. This study seeks to explore differences in deceptive IM behaviors by applicants across video interview modes (AVIs vs Synchronous Video Interviews (SVIs)) and the use of AI-assisted assessment (AI vs non-AI). The study also investigates if video interview modes affect human interviewers' ability to detect deceptive IM behaviors. Design/methodology/approach: The authors conducted a field study with four conditions based on two critical factors: the synchrony of video interviews (AVI vs SVI) and the presence of AI-assisted assessment (AI vs Non-AI): Non-AI-assisted AVIs, AI-assisted AVIs, Non-AI-assisted SVIs and AI-assisted SVIs. The study involved 144 pairs of interviewees and interviewers/assessors. To assess applicants' deceptive IM behaviors, the authors employed a combination of interviewee self-reports and interviewer perceptions. Findings: The results indicate that AVIs elicited fewer instances of deceptive IM behaviors across all dimensions when compared to SVIs. Furthermore, using AI-assisted assessment in both video interview modes resulted in less extensive image creation than non-AI settings. However, the study revealed that human interviewers had difficulties detecting deceptive IM behaviors regardless of the mode used, except for extensive faking in AVIs. Originality/value: The study is the first to address the call for research on the impact of video interview modes and AI on interviewee faking and interviewer accuracy. A validity and reliability study of the formative model for the indicators of STEAM education creations

There is a growing number of products for learning the interdisciplinary application of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM) in K-12. However, there is no general assessment tool for those STEAM creations, so as to help parents or instructors to experience and evaluate the STEAM products created or sold by companies or proposed by academic institutes when they want to introduce one to their children or students. Therefore, this study developed and validated an assessment of STEAM Creation with formative constructs by utilizing the PLS-SEM technique. The four constructs taken into account based on the theoretical foundations were computational thinking (CT) levels, design thinking (DT) levels, STEAM interdisciplinary levels, and literacy-oriented (LO) levels. CT was operationalized as four indicators (i.e., problem decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithm steps), and DT was operationalized as another four indicators (i.e., analysis of design requirements, creative brainstorming, hands-on experience, and test and verification). Meanwhile, STEAM was operationalized with five indispensable indicators, where each indicator refers to one discipline. LO was operationalized with three indicators (i.e., cooperation and co-creation, problem solving, and daily application). There were 16 indicators in total. Therefore, the formative relationship was established and evaluated in this study. This paper assessed STEAM creations with a formative measurement model comprising four hypotheses indicating that CT has a significant direct effect on STEAM and LO, DT has a significant direct effect on STEAM while STEAM has a significant direct effect on LO. The results reveal that all four hypotheses were accepted and the paths in the model were confirmed. CT has a significant indirect effect on LO through STEAM, which was also deeply discussed. © 2022, The Author(s).

The purpose of the study reported here was to explore cross-cultural training programs and expatriate adjustment effectiveness that increase effective cross-cultural interaction. Effective cross-cultural training increases trainees' knowledge, encourages them to see the personal and organizational benefits of cultural diversity and cross-cultural competence, and increases their skill and capacity to work with cultural diversity. Cross-cultural training is an effective strategy in the achievement of organizational performance targets and multicultural policy objectives. Addressing the identified limitations of current practice in CCT will increase its contribution to the development and enhancement of organizational and individual cultural competence.
