The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of online (web-based) creative problem-solving (CPS) activities on student technological creativity and to examine the characteristics of student creativity in the context of online CPS. A pretest-posttest quasi-experiment was conducted with 107 fourth-grade students in Taiwan. The quantitative analysis revealed that the technological creativity of the online-CPS students was better than that of the traditional group. It was evident that students in the online-CPS groups were better at analytic than at synthetic thinking. Metaphor and analogy were used to produce new ideas most frequently. In addition to generating ideas by themselves, students arrived at solutions by refining and adapting others' thoughts with little discussion or interaction on the web. Consideration of the feasibility of production was the most important factor in the technological creativity of students © 2011 IEEE.

This study used literature review and questionnaire survey to summarize domestic and foreign ideals in workplace health promotion and healthy workplace promotional strategies. By exploring the views of professional and technical workers in the beauty service industry in Taipei area toward workplace health promotional activities, this study aimed to understand beauty service industry workplace health promotion ideals and its promotional strategies. Based on the results, suggestions were proposed as reference for beauty service companies in the development of workplace health promotion plans for employees. A questionnaire survey was conducted, and 230 questionnaires were sent to human resources directors of 4 beauty service companies by mail. A total of 116 valid samples were retrieved, for a valid return rate of 50.4 %. The data were analyzed using statistical methods of frequency percentage, mean values, and Chi square test of homogeneity. The results showed that most respondents believe that workplace health promotion ideals should provide a safe and healthy work environment, and promote healthy and preventative capabilities. The top three activities of interest for a healthy workplace are regular health check-ups, alternative treatments, and sponsored leisure activities, as well as obtaining information on health. Respondents showed significant differences in the levels of interest toward workplace health promotion ideals and health promotion strategies, and in preferences for methods in obtaining information on health and views regarding health promotion activities. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.

The study aims to explore whether different amount of the first language (Chinese) information will lead to different effectiveness on high school students' listening comprehension and vocabulary recall. Furthermore, the study also discusses the relationship between different difficult degrees of videos with two kinds given amount of subtitles/captions and students' learning performance in English listening comprehension and vocabulary recall. One class was given the full first language subtitled movie with no foreign language captions while the other class was given the partial first language subtitled movie with full foreign language captions. The findings indicated that although the students received only the assistant of the partial first language subtitles, learners' understanding of the listening comprehension will not be affected and their performance in the vocabulary recall test statistically better than those who use the full first language.

This study used interactive e-book in English instruction and explored its benefits as well as negatives of 9th grader students' learning achievements in the English blank-filling cloze test. A questionnaire is used to investigate students' "perceived usefulness" and "perceived ease of use" toward using the interactive e-book in learning English. To find out the effects of using interactive E-book on English blank-filling cloze test, a four-lesson experiment was conducted in the English course in a junior high school. The experimental results show that although the students using interactive e-book did not outperform the ones receiving conventional instruction in learning English, the statistical feedbacks in terms of "perceived usefulness" and "perceived ease of use" on the questionnaire showed that the students highly appreciated and accepted the interactive e-book learning activity.

This study attempts to enhance students’ willingness to communicate in the field of English technical terms learning. The proposed learning design aims to train students in using various meaning negotiation strategies to discuss and clarify the meaning of given English technical terms and acquire the different aspects of word knowledge of these terms. Twenty-five senior students in a technology institute were provided with interesting corporative films introducing these English technical terms. At the end, participants completed a video-making project demonstrating the target English technical terms. The pre- and post-test of English technical terms and survey of willingness to communicate showed that the proposed learning not only improved students’ vocabulary, but also increased significantly their willingness to communicate in English. The results could provide a new way of English technical terms learning. © Springer International Publishing AG 2017.

Design thinking can foster creativity in learners, and creative self-efficacy can be a measure of creativity. This study was to examine the impact of the solar charger hands-on activities integrating design thinking on the progress of the creative self-efficacy and learning performance of junior high school students. We integrated design thinking into the solar charger hands-on activities. Participants were 82 eighth grade junior high school students in Taipei. The instruments used in the study were the Design Thinking Scale, the Creative Self-Efficacy Scale, the Prior Knowledge Test, and the Learning Performance Test. A pretest of prior knowledge and a pretest of creative self-efficacy were administered before the teaching experiment, and a posttest of design thinking, creative self-efficacy, and learning performance were administered after the teaching experiment. Students’ creative self-efficacy and performance were enhanced by engaging in hands-on activities, but the design of the hands-on activities and delivery of activities needed to be improved. At the end of the paper, implications for theory and practice are presented. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This study compared the learning effectiveness, speaking time length, communication competence, foreign language speaking anxiety, and cognitive loads of high and low English proficiency students playing the roles of both assessors and practitioners in a mobile-assisted language learning activity. This study integrated a concept-mapping application as a mind tool with an oral recorder application on tablets to support EFL learners speaking English. The system, named CMAS (i.e., the Concept Mapping-Assisted Speaking system), includes peer assessment and evaluation of concept maps at the end of each round of activities. After three rounds, the results indicated that the overall speaking effectiveness including appropriateness of vocabulary, pronunciation, intonation, fluency, grammar, and accuracy of the high proficiency students was significantly higher than that of the low proficiency students. The cognitive loads of the low proficiency students were higher than those of the high proficiency students. However, there was no significant difference between the length of speaking time of the two groups. There was no remarkable difference between the speaking anxieties of the two groups after the experiment. The CMAS benefited not only the high-proficiency students but also the low-proficiency students, especially in terms of the speaking time length and the speaking anxieties of the low-proficiency students so future research directions were identified based on the results. © Springer International Publishing AG 2017.

This study examined how students applied conceptual and procedural knowledge when engaged in an engineering design project. A mechanical toy design project was used as a context for exploring how science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) concepts taught in an engineering module facilitated student performance. Study data were collected from 103 high school student participants and analyzed using correlation, variance, and simultaneous regression analysis. The major finding of the study was that the students' STEM conceptual knowledge was the key to success in engineering design, especially at the synthesis and evaluation levels, and for their process ability to analyze, and evaluate during the project. Three recommendations are made to improve high school engineering instruction. To facilitate in-depth learning about the process of engineering design, multiple approaches should be employed to develop the students' application of STEM conceptual knowledge and process abilities. Teachers need to enhance students' science and mathematics knowledge to establish mathematical analysis and systems thinking. Students' spatial and sketching abilities need to be improved to better facilitate engineering design work. © 2013 TEMPUS Publications.

Iron has been increasingly studied over the past decade as a potential material for biodegradable bone implants due to its favorable mechanical strength and degradability. However, its slow corrosion rate in both in vitro and in vivo environments poses a challenge to its use as a temporary medical implant. In this study, the effects of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) addition on the corrosion behavior of an Fe matrix were assessed in two different solutions: phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and protein-containing cell culture medium (RPMI-Pro). The results indicate a significant difference in the corrosion rate and behavior of Fe-rGO composites, with notably faster degradation observed in RPMI-Pro. Electrochemical and immersion tests revealed that rGO enhances the in vitro corrosion of Fe scaffolds, primarily due to its high surface area and favorable electrical conductivity, which accelerate redox reactions within the scaffolds. The Fe-0.5rGO sample immersed in RPMI-Pro exhibited a higher corrosion rate, as the adsorbed fetal bovine serum (FBS) proteins facilitated Fe dissolution by complexing with Fe ions, thereby preventing the formation of a low-solubility, dense Fe-based oxide passive layer. © 2025, The Authors. The purpose of this study was to develop and validate an instrument to measure attitudes of middle school students toward STEM learning, including integrative STEM learning. The participants were 274 middle school students (grades 7–9) in Taiwan. Results from the expert review, exploratory factor analysis, correlational analysis, and group difference analysis provided different sources of validity evidence. Five factors were identified, including students’ interest/expectancies in math, perceptions of importance/utility of math, attitudes toward science, attitudes toward technology/engineering, and attitudes toward integrative STEM learning. Moderate correlations among the factors and STEM career interests and statistically significant group differences in terms of gender and participation in math remedial instruction were found. Multiple regression analysis results also showed that the five factors statistically significantly predicted STEM career interests. Internal consistency indicated an appropriate to excellent level. These results provided preliminary support for the psychometric properties to measure middle school students’ attitudes toward STEM learning. Finally, this study points out the critical role of integrative STEM learning in the construct and suggests further research on the mechanisms among expectancies for success, subjective task value, and persistence in learning STEM. © 2023 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.
