Formal methods (in a broad sense) have been around almost since the beginning of computer science. Nonetheless, there is a perception in the formal methods community that take-up by industry is low considering the potential benefits. We take a look at possible reasons and give candidate explanations for this effect. To address the issue, we propose a repository of industry-relevant example problems with an accompanying open data storage for experiment results in order to document, disseminate and compare exemplary solutions from formal model based methods. This would allow potential users from industry to better understand the available solutions and to more easily select and adopt a formal method that fits their needs. At the same time, it would foster the adoption of open data and good scientific practice in this research field. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2018.

An adaptive algorithm for LD converter steel refining control is presented. Avoiding the traditionally used balance approach, here a real-time process parameters estimation and control is applied. A Recursive Least Squares method is used and a minimum variance control strategy is realized. The original idea is that the converter steel making process| is considered as a continuous process which is sampled and one heat time is considered as one sample time. So, the process model parameters are adjusted after each heat and the algorithm adapts very fast to the technological conditions chanson. A distributed PS/XT computer two-leves control system is realized. Successful industrial results are obtained.

In this manuscript, an Economic production quantity (EPQ) model have been formulated for deteriorating items under partial trade credit policy with crisp and fuzzy demand. For fuzzy demand we take demand as a triangular fuzzy number & we consider upper α 1 − cut & lower α 1 − cut of this fuzzy number. Then the annual inventory cost of retailer is divided into two parts upper α 1 − cut of annual inventory cost & lower α 1 − cut of annual inventory cost. We use weighted sum method to convert multi objective to a single objective. Here we have to derive optimum cycle time so as to minimize the total average cost. Numerical examples are used to illustrate all results obtained in this paper. Finally the model is solved by Generalized Reduced Gradient(GRG) method and using LINGO(12) software.

Network Intrusion Detection Systems (NIDS) require the ability to generalize from previously observed attacks to detect even new or slight variation records of known attacks. As an intrusion detection system can be regarded as classification problem, we use Artificial Neural networks for detection. Using a benchmark study and set from the KDD (Knowledge Data Discovery and Data Mining) competition designed by DARPA and Multi-layered perceptron neural network, this Paper will aim to solve a multi class problem using MLP in to distinguish the attack records from normal ones, and also identify the attack type. In addition, it shows how to use Tikhonov regularization parameter to optimize the optimal network architecture in order to increase the system performance. The results show that the designed system is capable of classifying records with 98.34% accuracy with two hidden layers of neuron. Finally, the performance of the benchmark study is compared with our results.

If one desires that an automatic theory formation program detect inconsistency in a set of hypotheses, the Horn clause logic of Prolog is unsuitable as no contradiction is derivable. Full first order logic provides a suitably expressive alternative, but then requires a full first order theorem-prover as the basic theory construction mechanism. Here we present an alternative for augmenting definite clauses with the power to express potentially inconsistent scientific theories. The alternative is based on a partitioning of definite clauses into two categories: ordinary assertions, and integrity constraints. This classification provides the basis for a simple theory formation program. We here describe such a theory formation system based on Prolog, and show how it provides an interesting reformulation of rule-based diagnosis systems like MYCIN. © 1986, Springer-Verlag.

With the increasing number of IoT devices, there is a growing need for bandwidth to support their communication. Unfortunately, there is a shortage of available bandwidth due to preallocated bands for various services. To address this issue, Cognitive Internet of Things (CR-IoT) enables devices to optimize their efficiency and enhance their communication capabilities by intelligently accessing available bandwidth. This is achieved through the use of soft sensing metrics, where devices continuously monitor the RF environment and transmit data opportunistically in overlay mode if a free channel is detected, or in underlay mode if not. In this paper, a soft sensing metric based hybrid transmission framework is proposed for CR-IoT devices to meet the data rate requirement for the smart city applications. The efficacy of this approach is demonstrated through simulation results. © The Institution of Engineering & technology 2023.

Biocomputing and molecular biology are areas that change knowledge and skills for acquisition, storing, management, analysis, interpretation and dissemination of biological information. This requires the utilization of high performance computers and innovative software tools for management of the vast information, as well as deployment of innovative algorithmic techniques for analysis, interpretation and prognostication of data in order to get to insight of the design and validation of life-science experiments. Sequence alignment is an important method in DNA and protein analysis. The paper describes the computational challenges in biological sequence processing. The great challenges are to propose parallel computational models and parallel program implementations based on the algorithms for biological sequence alignment. An investigation of the efficiency of sequence alignment based on parallel multithreaded program implementation of Needleman-Wunsch algorithm is presented in this paper. Parallel computational model based on Needleman-Wunsch algorithm is designed. The proposed parallel model is verified by multithreaded parallel program implementation utilizing OpenMP. A number of experiments have been carried out for the case of various data sets and a various number of threads. Parallel performance parameters execution time and speedup are estimated experimentally. The performance estimation and scalability analyses show that the suggested model has good scalability both in respect to the workload and machine size.

Product reliability is of significant importance in today’s technological world. People rely more and more upon the sustained functioning of machinery and complex equipments for purposes such as health, economic welfare, safety, to name just a few. Thus, in a business arena, it is critical to assess the reliability of new products. In this model, a two echelon supply chain model with variable setup cost and deterioration cost are analyzed. The setup cost is directly proportional and the deterioration rate is inversely proportional to reliability. Algebraical procedure has been employed to obtain the optimal solution of this model. The objective is to minimize the total cost of the entire system by considering reliability as a decision variable. Some numerical examples, sensitivity analysis, and graphical representations are considered to illustrate the model. © 2015, Springer India Pvt. Ltd.

Access control is a vital security mechanism in today's operating systems, and the security policies dictating the security relevant behaviors is lengthy and complex, for example in Security-Enhanced Linux (SELinux). It is extremely difficult to verify the consistency between the security policies and the security goals desired by applications. In this paper, we present how to predict whether the information flow security goal is violated or not during runtime, how to generate the corresponding control actions on-line when divergence is detected and how to apply these actions in time based on software active monitoring technique. The symbolic security information flow model of SElinux is generated from a formalization of the access control mechanism which can be used to generate the N-step ahead projection of the future behavior. Information flow security goals are expressed in linear temporal logic (LTL) which provides clear description of the objectives desired by applications. Anticipatory monitor is generated from LTL formula automatically. We consider an on-line scheme where after the occurrence of an event, the next control action is determined on the basis of the N-step ahead projection of the future behavior. This procedure is repeated after the occurrence of next security relevant event. Thus, a closed-loop system is generated that all behavior sequences will satisfy the security goals.

We address the problem of performing a pipelined broadcast on a mesh architecture. Meshes require a different approach than other topologies, and their very nature puts a tighter bound on the performance that one can hope to achieve. By using the appropriate techniques, however, one can obtain excellent performance for sufficiently long messages. The resulting algorithm will work on meshes of any dimension with any number of nodes. Our model assumes that the mesh is a torus and/or that it has bidirectional links and uses wormhole routing. Performance data from the Cray T3D are included.
