This paper describes the objectives, strategies, assessment and evaluation, and special program features of the Rochester Institute of technology's (RIT) Multi-department engineering and engineering technology (MEET) Scholars program. This program began in December, 2004 and is designed to recruit, retain and graduate additional transfer students in our selected engineering and engineering technology degree programs. The MEET Scholars program represents a collaborative effort of five academic departments across two colleges, and the Enrollment Management and Career Services Division at RIT. All of the programs in the five participating departments are ABET-accredited, and require students to obtain one year of industry co-op experience before graduation. The MEET Scholars program builds upon our excellent infrastructure for mentoring students, and involves our mandatory cooperative education program - both of which help students address their financial needs and facilitate placement in the high technology workforce. RIT has an exceptional record in engineering student placement in industry after graduation and an excellent record for both retaining and graduating upper-division transfer students.

The so-called "last mile" of the telecommunications network, which links residences and business locations to the network, has traditionally been the last bastion of old technology. Residential voice service is still mostly provided via an analog signal over a pair of copper wires that connects the telephone to a switching system in a central office. The high-speed digital technology employed by modern switching systems and inter-office transmission systems does not extend to most residences. The local access network is a landscape of copper wires bound into large cables, splices, cross-boxes and other equipment that has provided voice-grade service over the years. However, the landscape is changing dramatically as both residential and business customers demand more and more bandwidth for a growing number of services including highspeed Internet access and video as well as voice. Teleos such as AT&T and Verizon as well as Multi-Service Operators (MSOs) are both vying to provide the "triple play" (voice, data and video) to these customers. In order to provide the triple play, service providers are introducing digital transmission and optical fiber, which have revolutionized long-haul communication, to the local access network. The Telecommunication engineering technology program at RIT is responding to this trend by providing courses and laboratory facilities to introduce students to the associated technology. Our Telecommunication Systems Laboratory now features both passive optical network (PON) and hybrid fiber/coax (HFC) technology. These are two leading approaches to provide broadband access to support the triple play. In addition, we are developing new courses to cover topics such as video transmission and broadband network engineering. This paper presents the current status of our laboratory and course development along with our plans for future enhancements. © American Society for engineering Education, 2008.

This research presents the development and evaluation of a breath alcohol measurement device utilizing the MQ-3 alcohol sensor and an Arduino Nano-based control system. The primary objective was to design an accurate and reliable system for detecting breath alcohol concentration, with real-time feedback provided through an OLED display and an active buzzer for alerts. The device operates by measuring the alcohol concentration in the breath and converting the sensor data into parts per million (ppm). When the alcohol concentration exceeds the predefined threshold of 5% ABV, the system activates an audible alarm via the buzzer and displays the corresponding ppm value on the OLED screen. A series of tests were conducted with eight volunteers who consumed varying amounts of alcohol. The results demonstrated the system's high accuracy and responsiveness, with the ability to detect alcohol concentrations ranging from safe levels to dangerous thresholds. The device was tested multiple times to ensure consistency and minimize errors, with the final results confirming its effectiveness in providing reliable alcohol measurements. This system holds significant potential for applications in monitoring alcohol levels in drivers and individuals involved in safety-critical activities. The research underscores the importance of real-time alcohol detection systems in enhancing public safety and ensuring compliance with safety regulations.

The rapid evolution of cellular networks has introduced groundbreaking technologies, including large and distributed antenna arrays and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces in terrestrial networks (TNs), as well as aerial and space-based nodes in non-terrestrial networks (NTNs). These advancements enable applications beyond traditional communication, such as high-precision localization and sensing. While integrating TN and NTN enablers will lead to unparalleled opportunities for seamless global localization, such integration attempts are expected to face several challenges. To understand these opportunities and challenges, we first examine the distinctive characteristics of the key 6G enablers, evaluating their roles in localization from both technical and practical perspectives. Next, to identify developments driving TN-NTN localization, we review the latest standardization and industrial innovation progress. Finally, we discuss the opportunities and challenges of TN-NTN integration, illustrating its potential through two numerical case studies. © 2017 IEEE.

The introduction of telecommunications into a new course at Texas A&M University was discussed. The thrust of the new course would be networking, and could be divided into three natural areas including voice networks, the PSTN with analog, digital, and VoIp telephony. The course finishes with packet networks, the internet, and TCP/IP. Complex internet concepts were described including classful and classless addressing, routing, domain name service, and dynamic host configuration protocol.

The initial years of a tenure track position are difficult for a variety of reasons, including the lack of preparation and experience that new faculty members have for various aspects of the job. Much advice has been given regarding the use of mentoring and workshops to accelerate the acclimatization period, but these methods may not involve the relaxed atmosphere and open discussion conducive to the development and free exchange of ideas and ideologies. In this paper, we discuss our approach of regular peer meetings of such discussions. Peer meetings promote the discussion of problems encountered by new faculty as the problems develop. Not only does discussing problems in such meetings assist in the creation of solutions, but everyone who participates in the discussion is thereafter prepared to avoid similar problems in the future. Considerations of group composition, group size, and what topics to discuss are examined. © American Society for engineering Education, 2008.

This paper presents the result of our experiment in a sophomore Circuit Analysis course using the learning-through-teaching method. The main goals of students teaching students are to have the student learn the material effectively and to promote life-long learning by cultivating self-learning. Details of how to make it a successful learning and teaching experience for the students are discussed. Topics discussed include: Why is self leaning important? How is a student teaching assignment organized? How are students motivated? How is the effectiveness of learning-through-teaching assessed? What are the common mistakes? Hopefully, the experience from the learning-through-teaching presented in this paper can provide useful information for others who are interested in this kind of cooperative learning practice. © American Society for engineering Education, 2008.

This paper describes a low-cost, successful program to help retain female engineering technology students with the ultimate goal of increasing the number of female graduates of our engineering technology programs. This program was started in 2003. The programming initially focused on academic support in the form of tutoring, formation of study groups and reimbursement for academic laboratory kits. This program did improve retention, but a survey of our students found that they also desired social support and opportunities to serve the community. Since the addition of programming involving social support and community building, retention of women students in the engineering technology programs has improved by an average of 6% per year. In addition to improved retention, the number of students receiving a D, F or Withdrawing from the core first- and second-year courses in these programs has dropped by over 75%. © American Society for engineering Education, 2009.

Medical images segmentation is an important work for object recognition of the human organs and it is an important pre-processing step in medical image segmentation and 3D reconstruction. Conventionally, segmentation is detected according to some early brought forward algorithms such as gradient-based algorithm and template-based algorithm, but they are not so good for noise medical image segmentation. In this paper, basic morphological theory and operations are introduced at first, and then a novel morphological segmentation algorithm is proposed to detect the segment of mammographic masses with salt-And-pepper noise. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is more efficient for medical image denoising and segmentation than the usually used template-based segmentation algorithms and general morphological segmentation algorithms. Furthermore, the application is helpful for physician and doctors in diagnosis of the breast cancer in further steps.

Motive, form and function of international R&D alliances: Evidence from the Chinese IT industry

This article adds to the research literature on international R&D alliances by focusing on alliances formed by multinational corporations with Chinese organizations. Using publicly available information, we developed a sample of 80 international R&D alliances between multinational corporations and Chinese organizations in the information technology industry in China formed during the period from 1997 to 2003. We use these data to test hypotheses on the connections between the declared motives, organizational form and R&D activity function of such alliances. Our analysis shows that the two most frequent motives of multinational corporations when establishing R&D alliances with Chinese organizations are establishing vertical linkages and obtaining human resources. Within the context of a strong preference for non-equity-based cooperative agreements, our analysis also provides some evidence for an association between the choice of form and motive, strong evidence for an association between function and motive, and strong evidence for an association between the form and function. © 2005 Elsevier Inc.
