The control of a three phase AC motor is performed with a three phase inverter. A key role in the correct functioning of the inverter is the used modulation technique. In this paper is proposed a class of modulation algorithms for the three phase inverters which have the advantage of a very simple implementation. The equivalence between a modulation strategy from this class and classical space vector pulse width modulation is demonstrated using simulation environment Matlab/Simulink. A comparative study of different modulation techniques was done referring to power losses of semiconductors.

This paper investigates the design of a multivariate B-spline neural network using the orthogonal least squares algorithm for non-linear system identification. The B-spline neural network is a type of basis function neural network which has been developed from the function approximation approach based on B-spline functions. Usually, this kind of neural network is trained using the gradient-based algorithm. In order to overcome the problems regarding the stability of the training procedure, a learning procedure based on the orthogonal least squares algorithm is suggested in this paper. This approach allows for the setting of the B-spline functions knots and also of the neural network's weights. An experimental study was conducted in order to identify a neural model for the Three-Tank System laboratory set-up using the multivariate B-spline neural network designed with the suggested procedure.

The paper analyzes a variable common mode voltage injection technique for multi-phase sine wave pulse width modulation with improved computational efficiency compared to the Space-Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM) technique and fewer level switchings in the power inverter, which still achieves similar modulation and control performance in the case of two level voltage source inverters. Also, a simple saturation handling technique is proposed in order to limit the waveform distortions when used to drive an electric machine during high torque periods (e.g. during steep startup or disturbance rejection). The fewer level switchings in the power inverter lead to improved output power efficiency and decreased thermal dissipation, factors that represent essential constraints in the current automotive industry. The simulation results for the three-phase case are compared to Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation (SPWM) and SVPWM, taking into account the effective use of the DC bus voltage, the distortion in the generated voltage waveforms and the current feedback that is obtained.

Permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) are widely used in electric vehicle application due to their high power density, high efficiency and very good performance at low speeds. Safety concerns in automotive industry require monitoring of the system to ensure a correct and safe operation of the electric vehicle. This paper presents three software methods for estimating the winding electrical resistance and detecting an open phase failure during torque control operation of a PMSM. All three methods can be applied online. Differences between these methods are reflected into computational effort and efficiency. The described methods were numerically simulated and tested in MATLAB. The first two methods monitor the electrical resistance of the stator windings which are estimated through an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) and an Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF). Hence, the three phase model and the rotating reference frame model are both used as internal models for the proposed Kalman filters and the estimation performance is evaluated in each case. In order to detect an open phase fault, the gradient of the estimated electrical resistance is monitored. The third method which is independent of the motor parameters calculates the Discrete Fourier Transformation (DFT) coefficients of the fundamental frequency in the phase currents signals. Hence, due to the low computational effort and good performance, the Goertzel algorithm is proposed. Conclusions are drawn based on estimation accuracy, time response and complexity of each method.

One of the main functions of the human nervous system is the muscles control. The complexity of this function increases for hand and fingers control because of the high diversity and accuracy of the possible motions. Starting from the control mechanisms of the natural muscle we developed a structure of spiking neurons implemented in PCB hardware that is able to drive the elbow of a human-like robotic arm. In order to increase the biological plausibility of the designed robotic arm driving system, the artificial neural network controls artificial muscles that are implemented with Flexinol actuator wires. From our knowledge the control of the actuator wires using spiking neural networks was not performed previously. The results show that the excitatory spiking neurons are able to flex and straighten the artificial elbow by stimulating two antagonistic actuator wires. Moreover, by using inhibitory neurons that modulate the neural excitatory activity the arm mobile segment can be driven to specific positions. Our final goal is the development of a biologically plausible neural structure that is able to easily drive the hand and fingers of a human-like robotic arm by controlling the artificial muscles implemented with actuator wires. This will give important clues for future developments of spiking neural networks that drive robotic arms for performing complex tasks.

Advanced techniques like image based predictive control are embedded now in visual servoing applications. As it can be seen in literature, the main visual features used in the nonlinear predictive servoing architecture are point features. In order to increase performances of the visual servoing systems, a model predictive controller based on image moments derived from point features is proposed in this paper. The new predictive control technique uses a local model based predictor for image moments and a reference trajectory in order to ensure a robust behavior. Based on the new predictive control strategy, a visual control architecture is designed and a simulator is developed. Simulation results are obtained for a visual sensor attached to a 6 d.o.f. robot manipulator in an eye-in-hand configuration. The results revealed high efficiency and robustness for the proposed approach.

This paper presents an evolutionary approach to multi-objective path planning. The paths are defined on continuous scenes with disjoint and/or non-convex obstacles, for robots moving towards their destinations along linearly piecewise trajectories with any number of vertices. The fastest feasible route is genetically selected via a simultaneous minimization of path length and path steering angle. In order to assure an effective partial sorting of the potential solutions, the genetic algorithm makes use of a self-adaptive Pareto ranking scheme, based on individuals' grouping and dominance analysis. Before ranking, all the unfeasible solutions are corrected, by replacing the sub-paths which intersect the obstacles. The feasible segments are chosen from graphs generated with Delaunay triangulation, by applying a new multi-objective ranking-based fastest path procedure derived from the classical Dijsktra's algorithm. This new procedure is compatible with any nonlinear objective functions and allows using the same ranking scheme during the evolutionary search and correction of paths, thus making possible to guarantee the feasibility of the paths without any significant intrusion in the evolutionary exploration. The proposed algorithm can also be used for solving any graph - based path planning problem, involving any number of objectives. The experiments show the usefulness of the suggested techniques on working scenes with different layouts of obstacles.

This paper presents the identification of a gas furnace process using the so called wavelet based State Dependent Parameter (WSDP) models. Here, each of the process' dominant dynamics are characterized by a state dependent parameter in form of wavelet which is able to provide valuable insight, and effective means to measure the system's degree of nonlinearity. To illustrate the advantages of the proposed modeling approach, the identified model is benchmarked with a few welknown reported results, i.e. fuzzy logic, generalised kernel and linear ARX models. © 2013 IEEE.

Torque control of permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) employed in automotive applications is a challenging problem. These applications are characterized by fast dynamics that are subject to physical and control constraints. The goal of this paper is to provide a controller synthesis method that can deal with these challenges. To this end, a one step ahead model predictive state-feedback control scheme based on flexible Lyapunov functions concept was designed. The quadratic constraints related to the system states and control inputs are approximated with polytopic constraints, which are linear constraints. Moreover, the rotor temperature behavior, which is crucial in automotive applications, is taken into account in the controller synthesis methodology. Then, the resulting MPC problem is reduced to a linear program to be solved at each sample instant. The effectiveness of the developed synthesis method is illustrated using a realistic simulation scenario. The simulated results show significant improvement compared with the classical PI approach.

This work presents in a structured manner the intelligent agent Belief Desire Intention (BDI) strategy enhancements applied in team programming and offers a practical multi-agent solution for a holonic assembling system. Standing with the advantages of the dynamic intentions reconsideration for reasoning goal oriented process at the individual agent level, the paper point out the mechanism of agent aggregation during team formation in multi-agent programming. It also argues the analogy team-holon and offers an example of a control and coordination multi-agent system for a holonic assembling process. The implementation was made in Goal ORIented TEams framework (GORITE), a multi-agent platform that supports team formation and goal based execution.
