This paper explores the impact of the burgeoning electric vehicle (EV) presence on distribution grid operations, highlighting the challenges they present to conventional pricing strategies due to their dual role as power consumers and suppliers, coupled with their energy storage capabilities. We propose an advanced real-time pricing model for the electricity market, employing a novel distributed bilevel optimization framework. This framework distinguishes between the distribution system operator (DSO) at the upper level and the EVs at the lower level, each aiming to optimize profit margins. The optimization includes power flow constraints at the upper level to ensure efficient operation within safe system limits, while model predictive control (MPC) is used to optimize lower-level EV responses. Additionally, we provide a rigorous convergence analysis of the proposed bilevel optimization method. Detailed convergence studies and simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed algorithm. © 2024 IEEE.

The latest work in the field of deep reinforcement learning speaks highly about the advanced exploration techniques which avoid the greedy decisions of agents. Usually, reinforcement learning works by finding the optimal policy for a Markov Decision Process. In off-policy algorithms the agent learns a value function for this optimal policy, separate of the action choice, an example being the deep Q-learning algorithm. Algorithms based on a maximum entropy framework, like soft Q-learning, overcome the greedy behavior of the agent, effectively combining exploration and exploitation by adding an entropy term to the Bellman equation. This method, applied to the Lunar Lander environment, was compared to the classic deep Q-learning, using the same set of different random seeds and averaging multiple runs. An implicit exploration strategy proves to compensate for disturbances caused by intrinsic sources of non-determinism, such as random seeds. This paper highlights the sensitivity to intrinsic and extrinsic influences for deep reinforcement learning, with respect to exploration and repeatability.

This paper presents an approach to validate ray tracing simulations using real-world measurements in 5G urban scenarios. The measurements were obtained by traversing specific routes and recording parameters such as position, Signal-to-Interference-plus-Noise Ratio (SINR), Reference Signal Received Power (RSRP), and Reference Signal Received Quality (RSRQ) using the Quectel RM500Q 5G module as user equipment (UE). Subsequently, these real-world measurements are used to validate a MATLAB-based ray tracing simulation. Simulating such scenarios in a controlled environment allows for easy manipulation and study of various parameters, enabling compre-hensive verification of the simulator's accuracy. The advantage of this approach lies in its ability to ensure the reliability of the simulation tool, enabling robust testing of diverse scenarios and parameters for deployments in real-world use cases.

With the increasing importance of cybersecurity in our digital age, cybersecurity competitions have become a popular way to test the incident response abilities of participants. This paper proposes a network architecture to test the vulnerabilities that may appear in a Red and Blue cybersecurity competition. The network architecture is designed to simulate a real-world cyber-attack scenario and includes a router, a core system, and multiple subnets representing different teams. Each subnet contains vulnerable systems that must be protected by the teams, who must also launch attacks on the other teams to identify flags. The architecture presents several challenges, including the large number of rules required for router configuration, which prohibit direct access to opposing teams’ virtual machines (VMs) and restrict/block access to specific phases of the competition. The VMs used in the competition include various vulnerabilities related to cryptocurrency wallet operation, medical clinics, chat services, X-ray clinics, SCADA communication protocols, and industrial power plants. Overall, the network architecture and VMs used in this competition provide a challenging and realistic scenario for participants to test their skills in identifying and mitigating cybersecurity threats.

This paper presents the ability of the federated learning concept to create a collaboration between multiple devices using a shared global model, while still keeping data privacy to meet the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). In real-world application scenarios, this concept faces problems related to the defense of the global model from possible attacks and the compatibility with non-independent and identically distributed data (non-IID). This paper presents two aggregation algorithms compatible with non-IID data, which use a refined aggregation of the local model, based on their accuracy. Thus, the proposed algorithms can refine the confidence in each client, eliminate intruders and allow a safe aggregation of the global model. Testing scenarios performed for IID and non-IID data illustrate that the proposed algorithms are able to provide faster training and improved robustness against intruders, w.r.t. the well-known federated average algorithm.

This paper presents a novel approach to Echo State Networks (ESNs) by integrating state-feedback with switching systems theory and the computational efficiency of Reservoir Computing architectures. We introduce an innovative architecture for ESNs, featuring a switching input weight and state-feedback gain, applicable to both linear and non-linear reservoirs. The stability of this architecture is rigorously analysed using the standard Lyapunov function construction method. Additionally, we explore the dynamical properties of a state-feedback ESN architecture used in the literature. The advantages of the proposed switching ESN is demonstrated using electrophysiological recordings in fruitfly photoreceptors.

Mobility in urban areas evolved massively in recent decades, leading in a continuous manner to traffic difficulties and significantly increasing the number of accidents, especially in crowded intersections. While much attention has been paid to controlling individual vehicles, recently the wireless communication networks were integrated as main ingredients for cooperation between vehicles with the other traffic participants and smart infrastructure. Thus, the fifth-generation (5G) communication technology promises an increase of the capacity for the existent cellular network, a faster connection, an ultra-low latency, and higher reliability. Moreover, device-to-device (D2D) communication is an essential feature when a large amount of devices have to be connected. The main advantage of D2D communication is the direct exchange of information between devices, without having to send the signal through the base station. Hence, this paper uses the Simu5G simulator to explore the D2D communication in a vehicle communication scenario by analysing the quality of the network. For this, the network performance was evaluated by monitoring the Channel Quality Indicator (CQI) and the message flow during the movement of the cars. The obtained results are in accordance with the real-time operation of the 5G technology. © 2022 IEEE.

Managing anesthesia and hemodynamic regulation during surgical procedures poses significant challenges due to patient-specific variability and the complex interactions of administered drugs. While advanced monitoring systems and Target-controlled Infusion (TCI) devices enhance precision in drug delivery, their reliance on manual adjustments limits real-time adaptability. This study investigates two advanced control strategies–centralized Model Predictive control (MPC) and decentralized fractional-order control–within a multivariable framework designed to regulate hypnosis, analgesia, and hemodynamic stabilization. Virtual patient simulations were used to evaluate these approaches under diverse anesthetic and, notably, hemodynamic conditions. The findings reveal that MPC delivers superior precision in maintaining the Bispectral Index (BIS) but tends to apply more aggressive adjustments to hemodynamic variables. In contrast, fractional-order control ensures smoother responses, though its ability to handle disturbances is less robust in certain scenarios. This study highlights the trade-offs between these strategies and advocates for further exploration of hybrid solutions to enhance patient safety and surgical outcomes.

The paper proves a new sufficient condition for the stability of switched linear systems with mode-dependent average dwell-time (MDADT). This condition is formulated in general terms of matrix-measure inequalities that are correlated with the properties of the switching signals. We show that our result is able to incorporate, as particular cases, several approaches separately reported by the literature of the previous years. The mode-independent average dwell-time (ADT) can also be addressed as a context derived from our main result. A numerical example illustrates the theoretical development proposed in the first part, including some studies on stability analysis for MDADT and ADT, respectively. © 2021 IEEE.

Quantum computing is progressing at a fast rate and there is a real threat that classical cryptographic methods can be compromised and therefore impact the security of blockchain networks. All of the ways used to secure blockchain like Rivest–Shamir–Adleman (RSA), Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) and Secure Hash Algorithm 256-bit (SHA256) are the characteristic of the traditional cryptographic techniques vulnerable to attack by quantum algorithms: Shor’s and Grover’s algorithms: can efficiently break asymmetric encryption and speed up brute force attacks. Because of this vulnerability, there exists a need to develop an advance quantum resilient blockchain framework to protect the decentralized ledgers from the future threats of the quantum. This research proposes Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC), Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) and Quantum Random Number Generation (QRNG) as a formidable architectural integration, to fortify security of blockchain. Classical encryption is replaced with PQC, QKD with secure key exchange by detecting eavesdropping, and QRNG with improving cryptographic randomness to remove the predictable key vulnerability. Only with a small loss of transaction efficiency, we increase transaction encryption accuracy, key exchange security, and resistance to quantum attacks. In this quantum enhanced blockchain design, the idea is to preserve the decentralization, transparency and security and at the same time overcome the future quantum threat. By going through rigorous analysis and comparative evaluation, we demonstrate that the approach saves blockchain networks from the emerging quantum risks to make sure that the decentralized finance, smart contracts and cross chain transactions. © (2025), (Science and Information Organization).
