Queuing theory has been extensively used in the modelling and performance analysis of cloud computing systems. The phenomenon of the task (or request) reneging, that is, the dropping of requests from the request queue often occur in cloud computing systems, and it is important to consider it when developing performance evaluations models for cloud computing infrastructures. Majority of studies in the performance evaluation of cloud computing data centres with the use of queuing theory do not consider the fact that the tasks could be removed from queue without being serviced. The removal of tasks from the queue could be due to the user impatience, execution deadline expiration, security reasons, or as an active queue management strategy. The reneging could be correlated in nature, that is, if a request is dropped (or reneged) at any time epoch, and then there is a probability that a request may or may not be dropped at the next time epoch. This kind of dropping (or reneging) of requests is referred to as correlated request reneging. In this paper we have modelled a cloud computing infrastructure with correlated request reneging using queuing theory. An M/M/1/N queuing model with correlated reneging has been used to study the performance analysis of the load balancing server of a cloud computing system. The steady-state as well as the transient performance analyses have been carried out. Important measures of performance like a vera ge queue size, average delay, probability of task blocking, and the probability of no waiting in the queue are studied. Finally, some comparisons are performed which describe the effect of correlated task reneging over simple exponential reneging. © 2021 Institute of Physics Publishing. All rights reserved.

In recent years, a lot of attention is paid to deep learning methods in the context of vision-based construction site safety systems. However, still there is no reliable way to establish the relationship between supervised construction workers and their basic personal protective equipment, like hard hats. To address this problem, a novel deep learning method combining object detection, keypoint localization, and simple rule-based reasoning is proposed in this article. In tests, this solution surpassed the previous methods based on the relative bounding box position of different instances, as well as direct detection of hard hat wearers and non-wearers. Achieving MS COCO style overall AP of 67.5% compared to 66.4% and 66.3% achieved by the above-mentioned approaches, with class specific AP for hard hat non-wearers of 64.1% compared to 63.0% and 60.3%. The results show that the conjunction of deep learning methods with humanly-interpretable rule-based algorithm is better suited for detection of hard hat non-wearers. Arterial Intersection Improvement by Using Vehicle Platooning and Coordinated Start

Intersections are the bottlenecks of the urban arterial causing the reduction of its capacity. In order to maximize the efficiency of existing transportation systems capacity with urban congestion reduction, intelligent transportation systems are employed. In this paper, such a solution is presented using the cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC) of vehicle platoons waiting at a red traffic signal which enables thus to begin accelerating in a coordinated manner once the traffic signal turns green. This coordinated start could allow more vehicles to pass through an intersection on a green cycle than manual driving and thus increasing the urban arterial capacity. To design and evaluate the CACC system, a novel simulator for connected vehicle applications is developed. The simulation results show that the proposed CACC approach offers significant mobility. © 2018

Mobile robot formation control is one of the most important problems in multi-robot systems. A very challenging sub-problem is mobile robot platooning, which means that the mobile robots should follow each other and should maintain a safe distance between them. In order to avoid collisions in the platoon, the controllers have to be designed to ensure string stability, i.e., the spacing errors should not get amplified as they propagate upstream from robot to robot. This paper investigates two different decentralized model predictive control strategies for platoon guidance using only longitudinal changes for the mobile robots. Moreover, the simple solution for mobile robot platooning assumes that there is no communication between them and each mobile robot measures only the distance between itself and the one in front of it. Furthermore, several comparisons are made with classical proportional string stable controllers and a performance analysis is provided. © 2019 IEEE.

Cloud service providers (CSP) provide on-demand cloud computing services, reduces the cost of setting-up and scaling-up IT infrastructure and services, and stimulates shorter establishment times for start-ups that offer or use cloud-based services. Task reneging or dropping sometimes occur when a task waits in the queue longer than its timeout or execution deadline, or it is compromised and must be dropped from the queue or as an active queue management strategy to avoid tail dropping of tasks when the queues are full. Reneged or dropped tasks could be resubmitted provided they were not dropped due to security reasons. In this paper, we present a simple M/M/c/N queueing model of a cloud computing physical machine, where the interarrival times and the services times are exponentially distributed, with N buffer size and c virtual machines running in parallel. We present numerical examples to illustrate the effect of task reneging and task resubmission on the queueing delay, probability of task rejection, and the probability of immediate service. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020.

The paper considers the nonlinear dynamics of a large class of continuous-time Hopfield neural networks (abbreviated as HNNs). Our research proposes sufficient conditions for testing the existence of contractive invariant sets with general form, defined by p-norms, 1 ≤ p ≤ ∞ , which are weighted by rectangular, full column rank, non-negative matrices. These sufficient conditions have algebraic form and use a test matrix built from the HNN coefficients. From the point of view of the mathematical constructions, this test matrix defines the dynamics of a comparison system (with linear form), whose trajectories ensure componentwise upper bounds for the HNN trajectories. These bounds play an intermediary role in proving that any HNN trajectory remains inside a contractive set, once initialized inside that set. Two theorems are stated for covering both the local and the global cases of invariance. The theoretical results are illustrated by numerical examples run in Matlab, which also offer a visual support for the invariance property.

The European eSafety initiative aims to improve the safety and efficiency of road transport. The main element of eSafety is the pan-European eCall project—an in-vehicle system which idea is to inform about road collisions or serious accidents. As estimated by the European Commission, the implemented system will reduce services’ response time by 40%. This will save 2,500 people a year. In 2015, the European Parliament adopted the legislation that from the end of March 2018 all new cars from the EU should be equipped with the eCall system. The limitation of this idea is that only small part of cars driven in UE are brand new (about 3.7% brand new cars were sold in 2015). This paper presents the first concept of an onboard eCall device which can be installed at the owners’ request in used vehicles. The proposed system will be able to detect a road accident, indicate the number of vehicle’s occupants, report their vital functions, and send that information to dedicated emergency services via duplex communication channel. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2019.

The neural correlates of face individuation – the acquisition of memory representations for novel faces – have been studied only in coarse detail and disregarding individual differences between learners. In their seminal study, (Tanaka, Curran, Porterfield, & Collins, 2006) required the identification of a particular novel face across 70 trials and found that the N250 component in the ERP became more negative from the first to the second half of the experiment, where it reached a similar amplitude as a well-known face. We were unable to directly replicate this finding in our study when we used the original spilt of trials. However, when we applied a different split of trials we observed very similar changes in N250 amplitude. Then, we developed and applied a new two-step explorative-confirmative non-parametric method based on permutation testing to determine the time course of face individuation in individual participants based on single trial N250 amplitudes. We show that the assumption of a steep initial increase of N250 amplitude across multiple presentations of the target face, followed by a plateau, yields plausible results in fitting linear trends for most participants. The transition point from initial acquisition to the plateau phase differed strongly between participants and tended to be earlier when performance in target face recognition was better. Hence, face individuation may be accounted for by a biphasic process of early, fast acquisition, followed by a slower, asymptotic consolidation or maintenance phase. The current approach might be fruitfully applied to further investigations into face individuation and their neural correlates. © 2020, CC BY-NC-ND.

The vast majority of the software developers use the agile framework for project management. Agile approach provides more flexibility and adaption to the changes against classic software development approach. The key methodology of agile approach represents the scrum. The core of scrum management forms sprint, which represents a time shift activity and envelops all other events of scrum. The outcome of the sprint should be the increment in development of the project, which is possible to submit to the customers or the users.
