The Swanepoel method is a widely used optical technique for characterizing thin films through normal-incidence transmission measurements. A critical step in this approach involves extracting the upper and lower envelopes of the measured oscillatory spectrum. By analyzing the transmission spectrum and its corresponding envelopes, the Swanepoel procedure enables precise determination of the film refractive index and extinction coefficient. However, even minor inaccuracies in envelope construction can propagate significant errors into the final characterization results. To address this challenge, we present what we believe to be a novel physics-informed optimization algorithm for envelope detection. Our mathematical model reformulates the envelope detection problem as a global optimization task that enforces the physical properties of the Swanepoel envelopes. Extensive validation on fifty randomly generated transmission spectra demonstrates unprecedented accuracy: the method achieves root-mean-square errors (RMSE) below 0.10% for the upper envelope and 0.06% for the lower envelope (more than doubling the accuracy of current state-of-the-art approaches). Furthermore, the proposed model has been assessed with two experimental transmission spectra, demonstrating its robustness and accuracy with real noisy data. We have developed an open-source Python software package (see text below). This software includes not only our innovative envelope construction algorithm but also additional envelope drawing algorithms for comparison and an efficient implementation of the Swanepoel method, enabling complete optical characterization of thin films. © 2025 Optica Publishing Group under the terms of the Optica Open Access Publishing Agreement.

We have studied the impact of the dynamic core-electron polarization on molecular ionization and Rydberg-state excitation for CO molecules subjected to different laser pulses by numerically solving the three-dimensional time-dependent Schrödinger equations (TDSE) and semiclassical simulations. It is found that the ionization and the Rydberg-state excitation prefer to occur for the peak electric field pointing from C nucleus to O nucleus if the multielectron polarization effect is included, which are consistent with previous experimental observations. In addition, the electron tends to occupy the low-lying excited states after the occurrence of tunneling and the excitation yield increases relatively with respect to the ionization probability if the polarization effect is considered, and the above intriguing features are ascribed to the facts that the tunneling exit becomes closer to the core due to the polarization effect. © 2025 Optica Publishing Group under the terms of the Optica Open Access Publishing Agreement.

Data-driven discovery of partial differential equations(PDEs)has recently made tremendous progress,and many canonical PDEs have been discovered successfully for proof of ***,determining the most proper PDE without prior references remains challenging in terms of practical *** this work,a physics-informed information criterion(PIC)is proposed to measure the parsimony and precision of the discovered PDE *** proposed PIC achieves satisfactory robustness to highly noisy and sparse data on 7 canonical PDEs from different physical scenes,which confirms its ability to handle difficult *** PIC is also employed to discover unrevealed macroscale governing equations from microscopic simulation data in an actual physical *** results show that the discovered macroscale PDE is precise and parsimonious and satisfies underlying symmetries,which facilitates understanding and simulation of the physical *** proposition of the PIC enables practical applications of PDE discovery in discovering unrevealed governing equations in broader physical scenes.

The ratchet effect has promising applications in radiation detection. We propose a ratchet structure that can achieve broadband terahertz (THz) detection. In this paper, we focus on the bias-tunable characteristics of the ratchet structure and its high-temperature operating characteristics. We give the photocurrent spectrum response characteristics of the device under different bias voltages and analyze the reasons for the bias-dependent characteristics. The response photocurrent results of the device to the blackbody under different bias voltages are also analyzed. The high operating temperature characteristics of the device under zero bias are also given. © 2023 IEEE.

Critical nonlinear aspects of hopping transport for reconfigurable logic in disordered dopant networks

Nonlinear behavior in the hopping transport of interacting charges enables reconfigurable logic in disordered dopant network devices, where voltages applied at control electrodes tune the relation between voltages applied at input electrodes and the current measured at an output electrode. From kinetic Monte Carlo simulations we analyze the critical nonlinear aspects of variable-range hopping transport for realizing Boolean logic gates in these devices on three levels. First, we quantify the occurrence of individual gates for random choices of control voltages. We find that linearly inseparable gates such as the xor gate are less likely to occur than linearly separable gates such as the and gate, despite the fact that the number of different regions in the multidimensional control voltage space for which and or xor gates occur is comparable. Second, we use principal-component analysis to characterize the distribution of the output current vectors for the (00,10,01,11) logic input combinations in terms of eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the output covariance matrix. This allows a simple and direct comparison of the behavior of different simulated devices and a comparison to experimental devices. Third, we quantify the nonlinearity in the distribution of the output current vectors necessary for realizing Boolean functionality by introducing three nonlinearity indicators. The analysis provides a physical interpretation of the effects of changing the hopping distance and temperature and is used in a comparison with data generated by a deep neural network trained on a physical device.

Enumeration and Representation Theory of Spin Space Groups

Fundamental physical properties, such as phase transitions, electronic structures, and spin excitations, in all magnetic ordered materials, were ultimately believed to rely on the symmetry theory of magnetic space groups. Recently, it has come to light that a more comprehensive group, known as the spin space group (SSG), which combines separate spin and spatial operations, is necessary to fully characterize the geometry and underlying properties of magnetic ordered materials. However, the basic theory of SSG has seldom been developed. In this work, we present a systematic study of the enumeration and the representation theory of the SSG. Starting from the 230 crystallographic space groups and finite translation groups with a maximum order of eight, we establish an extensive collection of over 100 000 SSGs under a four-index nomenclature as well as international notation. We then identify inequivalent SSGs specifically applicable to collinear, coplanar, and noncoplanar magnetic configurations. To facilitate the identification of the SSG, we develop an online program that can determine the SSG symmetries of any magnetic ordered crystal. Moreover, we derive the irreducible corepresentations of the little group in momentum space within the SSG framework. Finally, we illustrate the SSG symmetries and physical effects beyond the framework of magnetic space groups through several representative material examples, including a candidate altermagnet RuO2, spiral spin polarization in the coplanar antiferromagnet CeAuAl3, and geometric Hall effect in the noncoplanar antiferromagnet CoNb3S6. Our work advances the field of group theory in describing magnetic ordered materials, opening up avenues for deeper comprehension and further exploration of emergent phenomena in magnetic materials.

We present results for the axial-vector coupling and root-mean-square (RMS) radii of the nucleon obtained from 2+1 flavor lattice QCD at the physical point with a large spatial extent of about 10 *** calculations are performed with the PACS10 gauge configurations generated by the PACS Collaboration with the six stout-smeared O(a) improved Wilson-clover quark action and Iwasaki gauge action at β = 1.82 and 2.00 corresponding to lattice spacings of 0.085 fm and 0.063 fm, *** first evaluate the value of the axial-vector coupling of the nucleon (gA).In addition, the isovector electric, magnetic and axial radii and magnetic moment from the corresponding form factors are also *** the results at β = 1.82 and 2.00, we finally discuss the finite lattice spacing *** was found that the effect on gA is kept smaller than the statistical error of 2% while the effect on the isovector radii was observed as a possible discretization error of about 10%, regardless of the channel. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons.
