This paper describes a Plastic Waste Hotspot Detection System which has been developed in an international collaborative research project to realize an 'Environmental AI-Human Actions integration' with marine plastic waste reduction actions. In this project, various local conditions are obtained to the system to realize an environmentally resilient society. The nature conservation activities such as marine plastic waste collection and reduction actions are implemented based on these conditions. In the process of integration of Environmental AI and Human Actions, the effects of these activities and activists' contribution to environmental improvement and global-scale knowledge are accumulated, shared, analyzed, and visualized through global-scale analysis. This paper describes the Plastic Waste Hotspot Detection system as one of the systems that integrate AI systems and human actions. This paper examines the feasibility and effectiveness of the system through the fieldwork tests in Phuket, Thailand and Surabaya, Indonesia. © 2024 IEEE.

Osteoporosis (OP) is an osteometabolic disorder characterized by a lesser bone mineral density (BMD) and the disruption of bone tissue micro—architecture, resulting in a greater bone fragility and higher likelihoods of fractures. OP emerges once the bone mass declines faster than the body's capacity to replenish it, leading to a significant reduction in the strength of bone. OP impacts each and every bone throughout the body and provides no clinical signs until a fracture happens. Aging leads to the reduction in BMD, and the rate of percentage of fractures rises over time, usually causing mortality and morbidity. Numerous BMD evaluation methods are available, and they are used in a variety of settings by considering the location of the fracture. Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA/DXA) is recognized as the gold standard for predicting the fracture, since it is the most advanced, technologically affirmed, and also has excellent performance. According to the findings, most researchers do not endeavour the identification and the segmentation of low bone masses from DEXA images. Medical image segmentation supports in analyzing and visualizing the bone's low bone mass. The envisaged hybrid approach, that integrates GLCM for feature extraction and AlexNet for a low bone mass variation classification, provides segmented images that assist in categorizing bone health as normal, osteopenia, or osteoporosis. The developed algorithm's performance metrics, including Dice Co-efficient, Sensitivity, and Specificity, were 92.35, 90.26, and 92.42%, respectively. This study proposes methods that can be used to examine and interpret comments that users have made after watching videos on YouTube on a particular topic. YouTube tutorials are very popular among young people. They have become an important pillar in informal education, thus contributing to the rapid acquisition of skills and knowledge. Under these circumstances, we were interested in analysing the YouTube videos comments, knowing that the platform has a continuous increase in popularity, which is also due to the opportunities of sharing them. Since ChatGPT-themed YouTube videos have seen a significant surge in popularity since 2022, we were interested to analyse some videos that approach the topics of 'ChatGPT, AI clone, AI robot and Deep Learning.' © 2024 IEEE.

More than 1.3 billion people have a significant disability, and this figure will further increase due to the ageing population and various diseases. Including these people in daily life offers stakeholders significant social and economic benefits. Travel and tourism experiences are essential for disabled people. Providing fully accessible tourism-related services in all tourism chain activities through the adoption of advanced technologies encourages disabled people to travel more and enjoy higher-quality tourism services. This issue was discussed in an online focus group with the participation of disabled people and experts (n = 12). Helpful information was collected in response to the study’s objective. The study’s participants agreed that advanced digital technologies significantly facilitate the travel and tourism experience of disabled people. All parts of the tourism chain should adopt these technologies, and in this direction, the close collaboration and coordination of all stakeholders are required. Governmental organisations should have a key role in promoting the adoption of digital technologies that facilitate the travel and tourism experience of disabled people. Those countries that provide appropriate services to disabled people through digital technologies acquire significant benefits, and Greece should invest more in this direction. Practitioners and policy-makers can gain essential insights from the current study. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

Effective manpower planning is crucial for any organization, including universities, as it directly influences performance, productivity, and overall success. Inefficient recruitment processes can lead to increased costs, higher turnover rates, and suboptimal utilization of human resources, negatively impacting the institution's ability to achieve its goals and maintain a competitive advantage. The objective of this study is to develop a comprehensive digital solution to streamline and enhance recruitment and manpower planning processes, replacing traditional manual methods. This paper presents the Recruitment and Manpower Planning System, an innovative web-based platform designed using Extreme Programming (XP) methodologies. The system integrates modern programming tools such as Visual Studio Code, Laragon, Laravel 9, and MySQL, and utilizes Unified Modelling Language (UML) for precise system design. A mixed-methods approach, incorporating quantitative data from structured questionnaires administered to 500 users, informed the system's design. Data analysis indicates a 40% reduction in recruitment time, a 35% increase in successful job placements, and a 90% user satisfaction rate. Rigorous testing phases ensured system accuracy and quality. This digital solution not only optimizes recruitment processes but also provides a robust prototype for future advancements in manpower planning systems. © 2024 IEEE.

In modern agriculture, the capability to promptly detect and respond to specific events is crucial. This study centres on the transformative potential of TinyML for enhancing event detection in Smart Agriculture, particularly when integrated with LoRa-based Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). In this work, we underscore the unique advantages of utilizing TinyML at the edge-bypassing the latency and overhead associated with cloud-centric models and ensuring immediate, on-site analytical insights. Employing LoRa WSNs as the backbone provides a seamless, low-power, and expansive data communication framework. Detailed experiments demonstrate TinyML's efficacy in accurately predicting agricultural events while reducing computational and energy consumption. In conclusion, the synergy between TinyML and LoRa WSNs offers a promising approach for fine-tuned, real-time event detection, aiming for sustainable and high-yield agricultural practices. © 2023 IEEE.

Decarbonization of energy generation is required to address the urgent need to combat climate change and meet the Paris Agreement targets. Photovoltaic Systems (PVS) are a major contributor to this solution, and they are expected to grow significantly faster than any other renewable-energy technology in the coming years due to their appealing features. This paper discusses the development of a two-way communication protocol between two transceivers and a custom-designed communication board installed on each PV array. With this configuration, it is possible to transmit the measurements of each PV cell in the array to a data recording and monitoring service. Additionally, the application can customize the operation of the strings that make up the array, by broadcasting special commands to them. A prototype experimental setup was constructed in order to test the communication between the PV array communication board and the uplink/downlink transceivers. The experimental results verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed communication protocol between the Electronics Interface System (EIS) and the Smart PV array since the communication protocol meets the specification for transmitting the information from 1000 smart PV cells within one minute, as well as the strict timing requirements by the protocol for transmitting the parameters to the PV strings. © 2022 ACM.

This study addresses the formidable challenges encountered in automated brain tumor segmentation, including the complexities of irregular shapes, ambiguous boundaries, and intensity variations across MRI modalities. Manual segmentation, plagued by subjectivity and time constraints, further exacerbates the problem. To address these issues, we propose a modified U-Net architecture with an integrated attention gate. The proposed model demonstrates high performance, with notable Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC) and Jaccard Index (JI) values across various tumor classes, consistently exceeding 0.93 and 0.87, respectively. Incorporating Contrast-Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization and Histogram Equalization improves segmentation accuracy, particularly in cases of Meningioma. Comparative analyses against established models reveal a DSC of 0.9521 and a JI of 0.9093, underscoring the superiority of our method. Validation in the BraTS 2021 dataset underscores the robustness of the method, achieving high DSC and JI scores in four MRI modalities, with the T2 modality demonstrating the highest performance (DSC: 0.9216, JI: 0.8556). While acknowledging these achievements, we recognize challenges related to dataset specificity and computational intensity associated with the attention gate. Future research efforts should address these issues to improve the generalizability and applicability of the method in real-world scenarios. In addition to presenting a novel automated brain tumor segmentation method, this study contributes comprehensive result values and comparative analyses with previous research, providing valuable insights into the evolving landscape of medical image analysis. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2025.

We present the non-FIFO time-dependent graph model with REalistic vehicle eXchange times (REX) for schedule-based multimodal public transport, along with a novel query algorithm called TRIP-based LAbel-correction propagation (TRIPLA) algorithm that efficiently solves the realistic earliest-arrival routing problem. The REX model possesses all strong features of previous time-dependent graph models without suffering from their deficiencies. It handles non-negligible exchanges from one vehicle to another, as well as supports non-FIFO instances which are typical in public transport, without compromising space efficiency. We conduct a thorough experimental evaluation with real-world data which demonstrates that TRIPLA significantly outperforms all state-of-the-art query algorithms for multimodal earliest-arrival routing in schedule-based public transport. © Spyros Kontogiannis, Paraskevi-Maria-Malevi Machaira, Andreas Paraskevopoulos, and Christos Zaroliagis.
