The role of prescriptive social norms on employees' cyberloafing: the moderating effect of power distance and co-workers' interdependency

Purpose: When pluralistic ignorance about cyberloafing is increased, individuals engage more in cyberloafing. Cyberloafing has become a great challenge in business organisations, and it is believed that many organisations do not complete their daily activities as a result of employee cyberloafing. Using the social norms theory as the main theoretical framework, the current study aims to assess the effects of prescriptive social norms on employee cyberloafing with the moderating effects of power distance and co-worker interdependency. Design/methodology/approach: The data sample included 237 employees from six large organisations in the service sector. This study used a survey to collect data at different times and analysed the data using hierarchal regression and Hayes Process Macro. Findings: Findings revealed that there exists a positive and significant impact of supervisors' approval of cyberloafing on employees' cyberloafing. Co-workers' approval of cyberloafing does not have any impact on employee cyberloafing. Power distance was found to moderate the relationship between supervisors' approval of cyberloafing and employees' cyberloafing. However, co-workers' interdependency did not moderate the relationship between co-workers' approval of cyberloafing and employees' cyberloafing. Originality/value: This research examines employees' cyberloafing behaviours and highlights the adverse consequences of prescriptive social norms in a work environment characterised by co-workers' interdependence and power distance. © 2022, Emerald Publishing Limited.

The Value Chain of Education Metaverse

Since the end of 2021, the Metaverse has been booming. Many unknown possibilities are gradually being realized, but many people only determined that they use Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR) in the Metaverse. It is even considered that as long as the above realities (VR, AR, MR) are used, it is equal to the Metaverse. However, this is not true, for Reality-based display tools are only one of the presentation methods of the Metaverse. If we cannot return to the three main characteristics of the Metaverse: "digital avatars," a decentralized "consensus value system," and "Immersive experience," the practice and imagination of the Metaverse will become very narrow. Since 2022, the concept of Metaverse has also been widely used in classroom teaching to integrate into teaching activities. Therefore, to prevent teachers and students from understanding the Metaverse not only in the "Using VR, AR, MR is equivalent to Metaverse" but also pay more attention to the other two characteristics of the Metaverse: "digital avatars" and a decentralized "consensus value system.". © 2022, CC BY.

Objective: The aim of the study was to explore the psychological characteristics of the individuals with various suicide risks using computerized text analysis, in the hopes of a better understanding of suicide trajectories. Methods: 627 first-time callers' records were randomly selected from Taiwan An-Shin Hotline database between 2013 and 2018. The voice records were evaluated by two psychologists to determine the levels of suicide risk (156 with uncertainty of risk, 177 with low suicidal ideation, 157 with high suicidal ideation, and 137 with suicide preparation/attempt) and transcribed into text. The Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count 2015 (LIWC2015) program combined with Chinese dictionary were then used to calculate the frequency of word categories. Results: Exploratory factor analysis identified four mindsets of language characteristics, named “opposition and questioning”, “active engagement”, “negative rumination”, and “focus on death”. Psychological descriptions of the mindsets were also obtained through correlation analysis with the LIWC2015 categories and indicators. The four mindsets effectively distinguished the callers with different levels of suicide risk. Conclusion: The psychological characteristics of people with various suicide risks can be described and differentiated via the closed-word categories and composite indicators. These results provide useful information for practitioners and researchers. © 2024 American Association of Suicidology.

In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has been developed vigorously, and a great number of AI autonomous applications have been proposed. However, how to decrease computations and shorten training time with high accuracy under the limited hardware resource is a vital issue. In this paper, on the basis of MobileNet architecture, the dense squeeze with depthwise separable convolutions model is proposed, viz. MiniNet. MiniNet utilizes depthwise and pointwise convolutions, and is composed of the dense connection technique and the Squeeze-and-Excitation operations. The proposed MiniNet model is implemented and experimented with Keras. In experimental results, MiniNet is compared with three existing models, i.e., DenseNet, MobileNet, and SE-Inception-Resnet-v1. To validate that the proposed MiniNet model is provided with less computation and shorter training time, two types as well as large and small datasets are used. The experimental results showed that the proposed MiniNet model significantly reduces the number of parameters and shortens training time efficiently. MiniNet is superior to other models in terms of the lowest parameters, shortest training time, and highest accuracy when the dataset is small, especially. © 2022 ISA

Effects of virtual reality on creative performance and emotions: A study of brainwaves

Creativity is the basis for innovation and a source of national and industrial competitiveness. Thus, pedagogical enhancement of creativity is desirable, particularly via application of new technologies such as virtual reality (VR). The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of VR on creativity (creative outcomes and the creative process), emotions, and brainwaves using a nonequivalent-group pre-post-test quasi-experimental design involving 76 tenth-grade students. An experimental group received training that incorporated VR elements, and a comparison group was taught via lectures combined with multimedia presentations. The main conclusions are as follows: VR exerted large positive effects on the elaboration, vividness, and novelty creative outcomes;VR exerted above-moderate positive effects on feasibility but not novelty;VR exhibited small effect sizes in terms of enjoyment, anger, and anxiety, but a large effect size for boredom, and these emotions positively influenced creativity;and beta and gamma brainwave activity during the ideation and elaboration stages, and delta brainwave activity during the latter stage, were significantly lower in the experimental than comparison group. © 2023

The plants and trees are either utilized partially or wholly as a source of food and for its medicinal value. A wide variety of plants, trees and its parts are used from an ancient time due to its pharmaceutical and health-beneficial properties. In this perspective, the palmyra tree has its own cultural, nutritional and medicinal value of its own. The different parts of palmyra tree like roots, stem, flower, fruit, sprout, spadix, seed embryo are potent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-diabetic, anti-diuretic activity due to the presence of various bioactive compounds. This review article mainly focused on the nutritional and pharmacological properties, as well as the health benefits of the palmyra tree (Borassus flabellifer). Different parts of the palmyra tree exhibit unique medicinal value. This review outlines the pharmacological and health benefits of palmyra tree (Borassus flabellifer) especially in treating stomach and lung disorders, skin inflammations and other associated ailments. This review also highlights the possible inhibitory action of different parts of palmyra against harmful microbes and other disease-causing agents. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.

Due to the influence of the global pandemic, online and distance learning has replaced traditional classroom and face-to-face interaction so students can continue learning. Internet mediated self-directed learning also climbed to a new height and foreign language learning from YouTube video is a very popular learning method for many. Furthermore, YouTube videos can supplement cross-cultural knowledge for foreign language (FL) learners, which is a critical yet hard to develop ability for FL teachers. However, unlike for FL textbooks, the cross-cultural elements have not been examined thoroughly for YouTube videos. Therefore, this study analyzed the most subscribed and watched Japanese Chinese-as-FL YouTuber, "Lee Sisters ch", which is also the official representative of HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) test. We selected 30 most watched videos and analyzed their contents according to Chastain’s Big ‘C’ small ‘c’ culture framework. The result showed 86.67% of the most popular 30 videos covered topics about culture: 23.33% of the videos were related to big ‘C’ culture and 63.33% were about small ‘c’ culture. Similar to earlier researches on FL textbooks, "Literature" was the main theme of big ‘C’. On the other hand, "Everyday living" was the most frequent small ‘c’ topic, which is a unique phenomenon for YouTube FL channels. Furthermore, not only did the portion of big ‘C’ and small ‘c’ cultures match the suggestions of FL scholars, the language used in all videos were also mainly in Japanese that fit the needs of Japanese CFL learners. It is concluded YouTube video may be suitable to learn cross-cultural knowledge for FL learner, especially for Japanese students. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Crops produced using recombinant DNA technology have invaluable food security roles but are not broadly accepted. Food insecurity affects between 45% and 50% of the Ghanaian populace, while the debate to adopt, accept, use, and commercialize genetically modified (GM) crops is ongoing. In this study, a choice-based conjoint experimental design was adopted to investigate factors driving the acceptance or rejection of GM crops in Ghana. Results from average marginal component effect estimation suggest that safety concern is the major driver for accepting or rejecting GM crops. This was further confirmed using predicted probabilities and marginal means estimation of community acceptance especially when it possesses certain attributes. The safer the GM crop is perceived for human consumption, health, and environment, the more likely the Ghanaian populace will accept it. In addition, yield and taste were observed to be other key driving factors to accept GM crops. Importantly, the country of patency was also observed to be a critical driving factor for whether or not a GM crop is accepted in Ghana. There is a need for active and greater engagement with the Ghanaian populace to put proper legislation, regulations, policies, and knowledge co-creation process to ensure the proper use of GM crops. © 2024 The Authors. We have developed a novel composite filler with Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) : poly(styrenesulfonic acid) (PEDOT:PSS), a biocompatible organic conductive polymer, adsorbed on carbon particles for biological electrodes. This composite filler enables to fabricate high-performance biological electrodes simply by adding it to resin in the same way as conventional conductive fillers. The fabricated electrodes achieve ion exchange properties similar to those of PEDOT:PSS polymers and therefore low skin and electrode contact impedance. Electroencephalogram (EEG) measurements show that these electrodes capture various brain activities and exhibit high correlation (≥ 0.9) to commercially available wet and AgCl electrodes. Additionally, each electrode can be molded into various shapes and structures while retaining its electrode characteristics. Therefore, the proposed electrode is promising for EEG measurement, which requires high comfort and signal quality.

The effects of the PCM-based cold storage system operated under periodic (P12) and continuous (P24) storage conditions on the physico-chemical characteristics of mango fruits were investigated. Fruits in P12 and P24 storage conditions underwent weight loss, peel colour change, soluble solid concentration and maintained high firmness, titratable acidity and ascorbic acid along with the conventional cold storage system (G24). Temperature response and energy consumption revealed that PCM-based cold storage conditions P12 and P24 maintain the temperature within the permissible range and consume less energy than the conventional system. An effective reduction of 39 and 18% of energy consumption was noticed in P12 and P24 PCM-based cold storage conditions. As per these results periodic PCM-based cold storage (P12) can be effectively used as an energy-saving cold storage technology alternative to a conventional cold storage system to maintain the mango fruit quality during power failure and off-peak load conditions. © 2022 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.
