In this work an extension of the Latency Insertion Method (LIM) formulation to the treatment of networks with frequency-dependent parameters is discussed. It is shown that the algorithm can be transformed to allow efficient simulation of both skin effect of conductors as well as frequency dependent substrate loss in high speed circuit interconnects.

In this paper, various interface engineering techniques for high-k/Ge gate stack for advanced CMOS device applications are reviewed. High-k gate stack formation on Ge substrate is first addressed with emphasis on pre-gate surface passivation. Post gate dielectric (post-gate) treatments are then discussed to further improve the high-k/Ge interface quality.

We describe a joint control-communication optimization framework for network control of interactive power-electronic networks. The optimization framework includes two coupled blocks that in general do not operate cooperatively, one whose focus is on ensuring that the power network operates within its stability and performance bounds and the other, whose thrust is on optimizing the information flow in a communication network. Centralized and distributed implementation approaches for the joint-optimization framework are investigated. A case illustration of a homogeneous power network is provided to demonstrate the efficacy of the joint control-communication framework and comment on the implementation issues.

Wireless sensor networks are being used in different scenarios including safety critical applications that require real-time communication framework such that the events detected by sensor nodes reach the base station within a limited timeframe. The ad-hoc nature of the sensor network makes it impossible to develop a static communication scheme that works well throughout the network lifetime. The network needs to be capable of adapting to the changes due to node failures and traffic congestions. This paper proposes an ant inspired dynamic routing algorithm in which individual sensor nodes collaborate with each other to discover a route that optimizes the network longevity while maintaining network delays to an acceptable level. Fuzzy logic is used to develop ant-like ability in sensor nodes to determine the suitability of the node to act as the cluster head. Using this algorithm, the nodes that are in the energy-rich region and have low end-to-end delay are more likely to be the cluster heads and thus the overall route offers lower communication delays and longer network life in terms of effective performance. As the algorithm relies on local collaboration for the route formation, the algorithm is highly scalable. Better end-to-end delay is achieved in simulation using this algorithm.

Document binarization is an active research area for many years. There are many difficulties associated with satisfactory binarization of document images and especially in cases of degraded historical documents. In this paper, we try to answer the question ldquohow well an existing binarization algorithm can binarize a degraded document image?rdquo We propose a new technique for the validation of document binarization algorithms. Our method is simple in its implementation and can be performed on any binarization algorithm since it doesnpsilat require anything more than the binarization stage. Then we apply the proposed technique to 30 existing binarization algorithms. Experimental results and conclusions are presented.

Organic transistors that use dissolved ions to conduct current are able to reproduce the current-voltage characteristics of semiconductor transistors. The polymer-electrolyte transistor (PET) consists of a three-source acid/base reaction system, where a polymer gel separates the three source electrolytes and allows for transistor activity in the movement of the ions through the gel. The ability to directly measure the ionic current in the polymer of a PET reaction system without interfering with the reaction is a difficult task. Understanding the interfacial properties of an electrode-polymer junction will allow for a non-invasive method of directly measuring the ionic currents of the PET. The complex dielectric properties of a polymer system are considered, as well as the effect of the polymer-electrode interface.

We have demonstrated that effective gradient index devices can be fabricated to collimate and steer microwave beams by designing the spatial profile of positive effective permittivity across the slab. Resonant losses in the devices is reduced dramatically by operating at frequency ranges far from the unit cell resonance, and substrate losses is reduced by utilizing low loss material. Using these approaches, we demonstrate large steering angles of up to 22 degrees with only 0.7 dB transmission loss. These pave the way for practical implementation of low-cost microwave beam steering devices using metamaterials.

This paper presents measurement of 4times4 MIMO channel by using polarization diversity technique at 2.4 GHz. The measurement was carried out in indoor wireless environment and line-of-sight (LOS) condition. A linear polarization antenna was used at the transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) with a distance of 3 meters. The results were compared with power correlation coefficient of different polarization diversity techniques.

The advances in ubiquitous computing technologies have given rise to the u-Business, where we obtain business-related context information from ubiquitous devices to adapt to the changes of business environments in a timely manner. In these rapidly changing u-Business environments, we need a mechanism to modify business process schemas, which represent a group of business activities arranged in a meaningful way to give values to the u-Business. We also need a way to migrate running process instances to their new business process schemas. In this paper, we propose a rule-driven approach for dynamic business process schema modification and instance adaptation. The proposed approach uses rules to describe schema modification operations to be applied and rule execution conditions. Business environment changes are encoded in these rules, thus timely schema modification is possible. We also propose a system architecture for realizing this rule-driven approach. We have designed the system architecture by utilizing existing technologies so that the system can be easily implemented.

Based on the formulation for coherent backscattering from distributed targets previously published by the first author, this paper presents a unified formalism for incorporating the small amplitude, the small slope, the physical optics as well as a ldquotwo-scale modelrdquo approximation into analyses of backscattering by irregular air-dielectric interfaces. The distinguishing feature of this approach is that it takes explicit account of the antenna radiation properties and provides a direct means of numerically assessing the effects of spatial coherence of the surface irregularities on the receiver response. In particular, this leads to a generalization of the normalized backscattering cross-section which becomes dependent on both the antenna radiation properties and surface scattering characteristics. Numerical results obtained under the small amplitude approximation show that spatial coherence of the surface irregularities can lead to significant deviations from the classical Bragg scattering formula.
