Access control is a fundamental concern in any system that manages resources, e.g., operating systems, file systems, databases and communications systems. The problem we address is how to specify, enforce, and implement access control in distributed environments. This problem occurs in many applications such as management of distributed project resources, e-newspaper and pay TV subscription services. Starting from an access relation between users and resources, we derive a user hierarchy, a resource hierarchy, and a unified hierarchy. The unified hierarchy is then used to specify the access relation in a way that is compact and that allows efficient queries. It is also used in cryptographic schemes that enforce the access relation. We introduce three specific cryptography based hierarchical schemes, which can effectively enforce and implement access control and are designed for distributed environments because they do not need the presence of a central authority (except perhaps for setup).

We address the problem of rating or comparing navigation algorithms, or more generally navigation packages. For a given environment a navigation package consists of a motion planner and a sensor to be used during navigation. The ability to rate or measure a navigation package is important in order to address issues like sensor customization for an environment and choice of a motion planner in an environment. We develop a framework under which we can rate a given navigation package. Based on the navigation package, a partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP) is defined. Next an optimal policy to be used in this POMDP is searched for. The performance achieved under the resulting policy serves to measure the navigation package. The paper presents the motivations for solving the problem, the model we use and the framework which we have developed.

Distributed Object Computing (DOC) is an increasingly important computing paradigm exploiting the benefits of object-oriented technology and using the internet and its communications infrastructure as a vehicle for the delivery of a wide range of sophisticated value-added distributed services. The integration of the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) and object-oriented programming languages facilitates the introduction and deployment of such applications in a platform-independent open distributed environment. In this paper, we introduce both CORBA and Java as tools to facilitate the development of distributed object computing-based applications, and we present a prototype electronic commerce application using the DOC paradigm.

Image filtering is an important off-line image processing technique to improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and/or contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) of acquired images. The major drawback of filtering is that it often blurs the fine structures and object boundaries in the image along with noise. Anisotropic diffusive filtering techniques incorporate gradient information to blur homogeneous regions while preserving the boundaries and interesting structures. Unfortunately, their performance is limited in low contrast regions and around fuzzy boundaries. This paper introduces a multi-scale confidence based conductance function to address the limitations of anisotropic diffusive filtering. Experiments on phantom and magnetic resonance (MR) images have been performed using both our method and the gradient-based anisotropic diffusive filtering for comparison purposes.

The paper presents a preliminary report on modeling parts of a modular production system, their dedicated controllers, and the appropriate methods of fault treatment on the level of net condition/event systems (NCES). To achieve practicability, NCES support a systematic and modular way of modeling more complex systems as well as concurrent and non-deterministic behavior which is highly beneficial for modeling and control of DES in failure situations as studies of existing methods show.

Robotic operations carried out via the Internet face several challenges and difficulties. These range from human-computer interfacing and human-robot interaction to overcoming random time delay and task synchronization. These limitations are intensified when multi-operators at multisites are collaboratively teleoperating multirobots to achieve a certain task. In this paper, a new modeling and control method for Internet-based cooperative teleoperation is developed. Combining Petri net model and event-based planning and control theory, the new method provides an efficient way to model the concurrence and complexity of the Internet-based cooperative teleoperation. It also provides an efficient analysis tool to study the stability, transparency and synchronization of the system. Furthermore, the new modeling and control method enables us to design an Internet-based cooperative telerobotic system that is reliable, safe and intelligent. This new method has been experimentally implemented in a three site test bed consisting of robotic laboratories in the USA, Hong Kong and Japan. The experimental results have verified the theoretical development and further demonstrated the advantages of the new modeling and control method.

Heterogeneous computing is a new branch of parallel processing and is expected to reach super-speedup. It is an important step for heterogeneous computing to extract the heterogeneity hiding in a program. Such work is rather difficult, and some concepts and terminology are ambiguous. From the point of view of program structure, this paper presents formal definitions of SISD, SIMD and MIMD, which are the foundations for extracting program heterogeneity. Moreover, some heterogeneity criteria for several types of loop programs are proposed.

Circuit partition for low power is a useful technique which reduces power dissipation by confining the switching activity to a subcircuit. In this paper, we propose an effective output-oriented partition algorithm for low power combinational logic circuits. We discuss the relationship between power dissipation, area complexity and input/output behavior of the combinational circuit rather than inspect its logic function. Experimental results show that our algorithm can obtain sizable power saving over a wide range of MCNC benchmarks.

The multiplication algorithm of two polynomials on finite fields GF(3/sup m/) is presented. The 3-valued multiplier of the serial-in/parallel-out modular structures on GF(3/sup 3/) to be performed on the presented multiplication algorithm is implemented by current-mode CMOS. The current-mode CMOS 3-valued multiplier is implemented two GF(3) multipliers and two GF(3) adders. Performances of the proposed circuits are evaluated using Pspice simulations with 2.0 /spl mu/m standard CMOS device parameters, 20 /spl mu/A unit current level and 3.3 V V/sub DD/ voltage supply.

The paper presents the Software Measurement Analysis and Reliability Toolkit (SMART) which is a research tool for software quality modeling using case based reasoning (CBR) and other modeling techniques. Modern software systems must have high reliability. Software quality models are tools for guiding reliability enhancement activities to high risk modules for maximum effectiveness and efficiency. A software quality model predicts a quality factor, such as the number of faults in a module, early in the life cycle in time for effective action. Software product and process metrics can be the basis for such fault predictions. Moreover, classification models can identify fault prone modules. CBR is an attractive modeling method based on automated reasoning processes. However, to our knowledge, few CBR systems for software quality modeling have been developed. SMART addresses this area. There are currently three types of models supported by SMART: classification based on CBR, CBR classification extended with cluster analysis, and module-order models, which predict the rank-order of modules according to a quality factor. An empirical case study of a military command, control, and communications applied SMART at the end of coding. The models built by SMART had a level of accuracy that could be very useful to software developers.
