Wind Power Uncertainty and Power System Performance

The penetration of wind power into global electric power systems is steadily increasing, with the possibility of 30% to 80% of electrical energy coming from wind within the coming decades. At penetrations below 10% of electricity from wind, the impact of this variable resource on power system operations is manageable with historical operating strategies. As this penetration increases, new methods for operating the power system and electricity markets need to be developed. As part of this process, the expected impact of increased wind penetration needs to be better understood and quantified. This paper presents a comprehensive modeling framework, combining optimal power flow with Monte Carlo simulations used to quantify the impact of high levels of wind power generation in the power system. The impact on power system performance is analyzed in terms of generator dispatch patterns, electricity price and its standard deviation, CO2 emissions and amount of wind power spilled. Simulations with 10%, 20% and 30% wind penetration are analyzed for the IEEE 39 bus test system, with input data representing the New England region. Results show that wind power predominantly displaces natural gas fired generation across all scenarios. The inclusion of increasing amounts of wind can result in price spike events, as the system is required to dispatch down expensive demand in order to maintain the energy balance. These events are shown to be mitigated by the inclusion of demand response resources. Benefits include significant reductions in CO2 emissions, up to 75% reductions at 30% wind penetration, as compared to emissions with no wind integration.

This paper describes the hardware implementation of the RANdom Sample Consensus (RANSAC) algorithm for featured-based image registration applications. The Multiple-Input Signature Register (MISR) and the index register are used to achieve the random sampling effect. The systolic array architecture is adopted to implement the forward elimination step in the Gaussian elimination. The computational complexity in the forward elimination is reduced by sharing the coefficient matrix. As a result, the area of the hardware cost is reduced by more than 50%. The proposed architecture is realized using Verilog and achieves real-time calculation on 30 fps 1024 * 1024 video stream on 100 MHz clock.

We are concerned with charging electric vehicles at home. The energy demand from electric vehicles can increase more rapidly than our ability to increase the generating capacity or the distribution facilities in the electric network. Our objective is to use a smart power distribution algorithm to reduce the inconvenience to electric vehicle owners. When there isn't sufficient capacity to charge all of the vehicles simultaneously, we will select different subsets of vehicles to charge in each 5 minute interval. The smart grid will control a switch on each charger. The order in which we charge the vehicles has a significant effect on the number of vehicles that are delayed when they would like to leave the charging station, and the amount of time that they are delayed. By reducing these measures, electric vehicles can be deployed more rapidly. We compare a weighted fair queuing algorithm for selecting the charging order and compare it with a first-come-first-served algorithm and a round robin charging rule. The weights are selected based on the battery level when vehicles arrive at their charging stations. We assume that there is a correlation between day-to-day driving distances, and charge vehicles that require more charge more rapidly. The three charging rules are evaluated using measured data on the power usage, commuting characteristics, and the distribution of commuting times.

We investigate a non-cooperative interference canceling and power control (IC-PC) game in a Gaussian interference channel, where the receivers are able to process at most two codewords at a time. We characterize the equilibria of this game. As opposed to the pure power control game and the rate splitting game between the same players, we find that in the IC-PC game, there exist Nash equilibria where a player voluntarily reduces his power in order to enable interference canceling and achieve a higher rate.

Using the Triangle Inequality to Accelerate Density based Outlier Detection Method

Discovering outliers in a collection of patterns is a very well known problem that has been studied in various application domains. Density based technique is a popular one for finding outliers in a dataset. This technique calculates outlierness of each pattern using statistics of neighborhood of the pattern. However, density based approaches do not work well with large datasets as these approaches need to compute a large number of distance computations inorder to find neighborhood statistics. In this paper, we propose to utilize triangle inequality based indexing approach to speed up the classical density based outlier detection method LOF. Proposed approach computes less number of distance computations compared to the LOF method. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method reduces a significant number of distance computations compared to the LOF method.

Wireless Sensor network has emerged as a promising technique that revolutionizes the way of sensing information. Dense deployed sensor nodes at a specific region are likely to transfer redundant data to the base station. This increase the communicational overhead and affects network lifetime. Since energy conservation is the key issue in WSNs, data aggregation should be incorporated in order to save energy. The main aim of data aggregation technique is to collect and aggregate data in an energy efficient manner so that network lifetime is enhanced. In this paper, we present a survey on data aggregation technique in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). Here, we explore different types of data aggregation algorithms based on network architecture, approaches and performance characteristics. Based on the study, the future research areas and issues to be focused are Security, Energy conservation, query processing, communication & uncertainty in sensor reading.

Recognizing actions having similar movements is a challenging problem. Human action understanding task is divided into two issues in this paper. One is a classical action recognition task where we employ a probabilistic model to learn and recognize human actions. The other is action categorization task where we classify actions based on quantized human movement. An approach called Action Trait Code (ATC) for human action classification is proposed to represent an action with a set of velocity types derived by the averages velocity of each body part. An effective graph model based on ATC classification is employed for learning and recognizing human actions. To examine recognition accuracy, we evaluate our approach on Cornell Kinect Activity Database and compare with a hierarchical maximum entropy Markov model (MEMM). Besides, the results on self-collected action database demonstrate that the proposed approach not only successfully achieves high recognition accuracy but also performs in real-time.
