The design and testing of explosive-driven ferroelectric generators (FEGs) with output voltages exceeding 200 kV is presented. The generator design is aimed at achieving high voltages in a compact device by explosively compressing stacks of ferroelectric ceramic discs. The ferroelectric used in this application is EC -64 lead zirconate- titanate (PZT), a hard ferroelectric ceramic with a high dielectric constant and a good piezoelectric coupling coefficient in the direction of polarization. The pressure impulse is generated by high explosive detonating cord and travels longitudinally along the polarization vector in the PZT. The effect of variations in the rise-time, width, and magnitude of the pressure pulse on the peak voltage has been experimentally studied by modifying the ferroelectric stack and explosive driver geometries. Different dielectric insulations are experimentally evaluated for good compatibility with the ferroelectrics and maximum hold-off voltage.

This article reviews the current transmission control protocol (TCP) congestion control protocols and overviews recent advances that have brought analytical tools to this problem. We describe an optimization-based framework that provides an interpretation of various flow control mechanisms, in particular, the utility being optimized by the protocol's equilibrium structure. We also look at the dynamics of TCP and employ linear models to exhibit stability limitations in the predominant TCP versions, despite certain built-in compensations for delay. Finally, we present a new protocol that overcomes these limitations and provides stability in a way that is scalable to arbitrary networks, link capacities, and delays.

A Markov process model for contour curvature is introduced via a stochastic differential equation. We analyze the distribution of such curves, and show that its mode is the Euler spiral, a curve minimizing changes in curvature. To probabilistically enhance noisy and low contrast curve images (e.g., edge and line operator responses), we combine this curvature process with the curve indicator random field, which is a prior for ideal curve images. In particular, we provide an expression for a nonlinear, minimum mean square error filter that requires the solution of two elliptic partial differential equations. Initial computations are reported, highlighting how the filter is curvature-selective, even when curvature is absent in the input. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

A knowledge representation scheme for systems modelling should support system qualification, system decomposition and model composition, and the generation of representations suitable for multiple types of model service. This paper describes a prototype, based on domain specific knowledge representations, aimed at providing multiple model services. The functionality of some typical reasoning rules used for manipulating the knowledge represented in different objects is outlined and the desired features of applications also indicated. The results show that a unified approach, intelligent object-oriented modelling, could provide an ideal approach to the problem of multi-disciplinary system modelling and might be responsible for progress that eases the difficult task of encoding heterogeneous knowledge of realworld applications

The design and development of an embeddable corrosion measurement microsystem which takes advantage of the increased availability of Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) development and Very Large Scale Integrated (VLSI) circuit manufacturing is described. Key elements of the system (micropotentiostat with zero resistance ammeter (ZRA) and analog-to-digital (A/D) and digital-to-analog (D/A) converters were tested electronically and found to perform satisfactorily. The micropotentiostat/ZRA combination was also tested on steel electrodes exposed to 0.6 M NaCl, saturated Ca(OH)2, and saturated Ca(OH)2 + 0.6 M NaCl. Comparisons of polarization resistance data generated by the micropotentiostat and commercially available systems demonstrated that the two systems performed equivalently. The 10-bit A/D and 6-bit D/A converters exhibited excellent linearity over a wide range of inputs. Future directions for the development of the embeddable corrosion measurement microsystem are also outlined. © 1997 by NACE International.

An Object-Oriented Information Model for Intelligent Modelling

The principal objective of this paper is to report on the development of a framework for intelligent modelling aimed at the formulation of models for science and engineering systems. After an introduction of the features of modelling, three aspects and three basic steps of particular relevance to the modelling framework are indicated. In particular, the knowledge structure of modelling will be considered in the context of both the modelling process and the functionality of system representation. The main body of the paper is concerned with describing the object-oriented information model for modelling which will form the heart of the knowledge-based system together with remarks on aspects of its usability.

A neural-net based short term load forecasting using moving window procedure

An improved neural-net approach based on a combined unsupervised/supervised learning concept is proposed. A 'moving window' procedure is applied to the most recent load and weather information for creating training set data base. A forecasting lead time that varies from 16 hours to 88 hours is introduced to produce the short term electric load forecasting that meets requirements of real electric utility operating practice. The unsupervised learning (UL) is used to identify days with similar daily load patterns. A feed forward three-layer neural net is designed to predict 24-hour loads within the supervised learning (SL) phase. The effectiveness of proposed methods is demonstrated by comparison of forecasted hourly loads in every single day during 1991 with data realized in the same period in the Electric Power Utility of Serbia (EPS). A better choice of input features and more appropriate training set selection procedure allow significant improvement in forecasting results comparing with our previous UL/SL concept characterized by a fixed neural-net structure and absence of re-training procedure. The improvement is illustrated by reduction of average error in daily energy forecasting for 0.83% and reduction of 90th percentile of 2.04%.

Aspects of the design and specification of a generic graphical user interface for control system design and the emerging standards for user interface implementation that underlie it are discussed. The use of this interface in future design environments should permit the rapid development of novel design methods and at the same time, by enforcing a consistent look and feel across applications, make the transfer of new knowledge much simpler than is possible at present. A brief history of computer-aided control system design (CACSD) is given. Advantages of sophisticated graphical user interfaces and standards for user interface development are discussed. A description of how an existing CACSD package has been redesigned to take on board the latest user interface technology is included.< >

An empirical heuristic learning identification algorithm of Ivakhnenko was modified and used to model an environmental system producing high nitrate levels in agricultural drain water in the Corn Belt. The method amounts to fitting a polynomial to a multi-input single-output response surface. The modifications result in a reduced number of terms in final model equations, a decrease in computational difficulties, and other improvements in the algorithm. This method appears to be advantageous with systems characterized by complexity with many variables and parameters, ill-defined mathematical structures, and limited data. In other words, this algorithm is useful for empirically generating hypotheses about systems of which relatively little is known. © 1975 IEEE. All rights reserved.

In addition to having sailed in the deck and engineering departments of merchant and naval ships his experience includes managing and participating in numerous research projects in the areas of ship resistance and propulsion ship maneuverability and control seakeeping underwater acoustics oceanographic survey fleet requirements ship trials hydrofoil design and various aspects of underwater engineering.
