The permanent magnet step motor (PM step motor) is one of the most important control elements used in the process control industry. In this study, a method is proposed by the use of the sensitivities of the transfer function to determine the optimum parameter tolerances of such motors. These tolerances keep the deviation of the output of the PM step motor due to parameter variations, in the tolerance region. Furthermore a sensitivity measure is defined to be used to improve the sensitivity performance of a PM step motor and to compare various PM step motors with different sets of design parameter values which realize the same transfer function.

This paper discusses a methodology and algorithms for efficient hardware synthesis of inter-process communication in systems described in SDL. The basic idea of our approach is to implement an SDL process by two hardware blocks, namely Computation Block and Communication Block. The Computation Block implements the data computation functions of the process as an Extended FSM (EFSM). The Communication Block implements the communication of the process with other processes. We give an algorithm to classify the communication requirements of the process and have an efficient implementation for it. Our scheme also has a supervisor block for every SDL block to manage interprocess communication. Our methodology supports multiple instances of the processes and dynamic processes. In our scheme, a single copy of hardware (Compute block) is shared among multiple copies of a process within a block which leads to efficient hardware implementation.

A sliding mode based controller is designed to achieve the end-point tracking of a flexible arm, with minimum transient and steady-state error. The information on deflection is derived through a sliding mode observer, providing data on the variables, q/sub 1/ and q/sub 2/ and their derivatives. The sliding mode technique utilized both for the observer and the controller provides robustness against the nonlinearities and uncertainties of the system. The obtained simulation results demonstrate the fulfilment of the performance goals and thus, motivate the implementation of the method on a DSP-based flexible arm test-bed.

A knowledge representation scheme for systems modelling should support system qualification, system decomposition and model composition, and the generation of representations suitable for multiple types of model service. This paper describes a prototype, based on domain specific knowledge representations, aimed at providing multiple model services. The functionality of some typical reasoning rules used for manipulating the knowledge represented in different objects is outlined and the desired features of applications also indicated. The results show that a unified approach, intelligent object-oriented modelling, could provide an ideal approach to the problem of multi-disciplinary system modelling and might be responsible for progress that eases the difficult task of encoding heterogeneous knowledge of realworld applications

Real-time, in situ control of reactive ion etching is shown to reduce loading disturbance in an Applied 8300 reactive ion etch system. The etch process vehicle is CF4 etching of polysilicon. A real-time, multivariable feedback control strategy where key plasma parameters are fed back has been developed. This strategy is experimentally compared with standard industry practice and is shown to reduce the loading effect by 80%. This quantification of improvement is carried out in terms of a model from the literature which is reviewed and experimentally validated for the etch equipment and process used.
