The forthcoming sixth-generation (6G) mobile network is set to merge edge artificial intelligence (AI) and integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) extensively, giving rise to the new paradigm of edge intelligent sensing (EI-Sense). This paradigm leverages ubiquitous edge devices for environmental sensing and deploys AI algorithms at edge servers to interpret the observations via remote inference on wirelessly uploaded features. A significant challenge arises in designing EI-Sense systems for 6G mission-critical applications, which demand high performance under stringent latency constraints. To tackle this challenge, we focus on the end-to-end (E2E) performance of EI-Sense and characterize a source-channel tradeoff that balances source distortion and channel reliability. In this work, we establish a theoretical foundation for the source-channel tradeoff by quantifying the effects of source coding on feature discriminant gains and channel reliability on packet loss. Building on this foundation, we design the coding rate control by optimizing the tradeoff to minimize the E2E sensing error probability, leading to a low-complexity algorithm for ultra-low-latency EI-Sense. Finally, we validate our theoretical analysis and proposed coding rate control algorithm through extensive experiments on both synthetic and real datasets, demonstrating the sensing performance gain of our approach with respect to traditional reliability-centric methods. Modular design is one of the key factors in building new-generation computer systems. Three principal classes of system construction models are data flow, control flow and the combination of data flow and control flow. Based on the project AIDS, an extended control-flow is presented, i. e. a data-flow model applying to software and hardware system development. The system design language SDL is described. It is a very high-level language, which provides a natural way for users to design systems exploiting concurrency for the combined model. The language, implemented in Prolog, is considered to be precise, flexible, readable and easy to use. A case study is given for comparison with the previous language G.

The need for an early detection of disaster has grown vital because of the rise in natural disaster events occurred in Malaysia recently, such as fire, landslides, and floods. Thus, an early warning system could somehow reduce the seriousness of disaster. Due to this, Polymer Optical Fiber (POF) has garnered a lot of interest, because of its promising features especially for becoming a sensing device. This paper study the effectiveness of polymer FBG sensor in Fiber-To-The Home (FTTH) network. The simulation was done using OptiSystem7.0 software. The changes of power(dBm) due to the temperature changes was tabulated. PMMA has shown a significant change in power with averagely 1.123 dBm drop for every 10°C increase of temperature. This indicates that PMMA have promising characteristics to become the main material for fabrication of FBG sensor. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Evolutionary optimization is a generic population-based metaheuristic that can be adapted to solve a wide variety of optimization problems and has proven very effective for combinatorial optimization problems. However, the potential of this metaheuristic has not been utilized in Distributed Constraint Optimization Problems (DCOPs), a well-known class of combinatorial optimization problems prevalent in Multi-Agent Systems. In this paper, we present a novel population-based algorithm, Anytime Evolutionary DCOP (AED), that uses evolutionary optimization to solve DCOPs. In AED, the agents cooperatively construct an initial set of random solutions and gradually improve them through a new mechanism that considers an optimistic approximation of local benefits. Moreover, we present a new anytime update mechanism for AED that identifies the best among a distributed set of candidate solutions and notifies all the agents when a new best is found. In our theoretical analysis, we prove that AED is anytime. Finally, we present empirical results indicating AED outperforms the state-of-the-art DCOP algorithms in terms of solution quality. © 2020 International Foundation for Autonomous.

Most violent crimes happen in urban and suburban cities. With emerging tracking techniques, law enforcement officers can have real-time location information of the escaping criminals and dynamically adjust the security resource allocation to interdict them. Unfortunately, existing work on urban network security games largely ignores such information. This paper addresses this omission. First, we show that ignoring the real-time information can cause an arbitrarily large loss of efficiency. To mitigate this loss, we propose a novel NEtwork purSuiT game (NEST) model that captures the interaction between an escaping adversary and a defender with multiple resources and real-time information available. Second, solving NEST is proven to be NP-hard. Third, after transforming the non-convex program of solving NEST to a linear program, we propose our incremental strategy generation algorithm, including: (i) novel pruning techniques in our best response oracle;and (ii) novel techniques for mapping strategies between subgames and adding multiple best response strategies at one iteration to solve extremely large problems. Finally, extensive experiments show the effectiveness of our approach, which scales up to realistic problem sizes with hundreds of nodes on networks including the real network of Manhattan. © 2019, Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (***). Detecting emergent events and monitoring civil infrastructures in modern metropolitan cities by participatory sensing have recently been identified as a critical part of the public service management. With fast information distribution, multimedia messages (e.g., sound, images, videos, and texts) collected from citizens' smart devices can provide useful information to infer such emergencies by processing application level queries initialized from end terminals. This requires to establish an efficient, real-time processing systems for participatory sensing that can cope with both the dynamic queries and a variety of information with diverse attributes. To this end, in this paper, we first design a distributed and real-time query framework for event-based stream processing in participatory sensing, including a Storm-based real-time query engine, a messaging queue on Kafka, and a data persistence module based on HBase. Second, a dynamic indexing division method that is aware of the change of query attributes and volume is proposed. Third, we implement an application for civil infrastructure monitoring, and finally we evaluate the performance of proposed framework compared with existing approaches, simulation results of which show its advantages.

On population-based algorithms for distributed constraint optimization problems

Distributed Constraint Optimization Problems (DCOPs) are a widely studied class of optimization problems in which interaction between a set of cooperative agents are modeled as a set of constraints. DCOPs are NP-hard and significant effort has been devoted to developing methods for finding incomplete solutions. In this paper, we study an emerging class of such incomplete algorithms that are broadly termed as population-based algorithms. The main characteristic of these algorithms is that they maintain a population of candidate solutions of a given problem and use this population to cover a large area of the search space and to avoid local-optima. In recent years, this class of algorithms has gained significant attention due to their ability to produce high-quality incomplete solutions. With the primary goal of further improving the quality of solutions compared to the state-of-the-art incomplete DCOP algorithms, we present two new population-based algorithms in this paper. Our first approach, Anytime Evolutionary DCOP or AED, exploits evolutionary optimization meta-heuristics to solve DCOPs. We also present a novel anytime update mechanism that gives AED its anytime property. While in our second contribution, we show that population-based approaches can be combined with local search approaches. Specifically, we develop an algorithm called DPSA based on the Simulated Annealing meta-heuristic. We empirically evaluate these two algorithms to illustrate their respective effectiveness in different settings against the state-of-the-art incomplete DCOP algorithms including all existing population-based algorithms in a wide variety of benchmarks. Our evaluation shows AED and DPSA markedly outperform the state-of-the-art and produce up to 75% improved solutions. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

A well-defined agent-based model able to match the widely observed properties of financial assets is valuable for testing the implications of various empirically observed heuristics associated with investors behaviour. In this paper, we extend one of the most successful models in capturing the observed behaviour of traders, and present a new behavioural asset pricing model with heterogeneous agents. Specifically, we introduce a new behavioural bias in the model, loss aversion, and show that it causes a major difference in the agents interactions. As we demonstrate, the resulting dynamics achieve one of the major objectives of the field, replicating a rich set of the stylized facts of financial data. In particular, for the first time our model enables us to match the following empirically observed properties: conditional heavy tails of returns, gains/loss asymmetry, volume power-law and long memory and volume-volatility relations.

This paper presents the coherent parallel programming concept using a new parallel language called C/spl par/ (pronounced C Parallel). The C/spl par/ language is based on the standard C language with a small set of extended constructs for parallelism and process interaction. At the core of C/spl par/ is a structured construct called coherent region, which facilitates the development of coherent programs, i.e., parallel programs that are structured, determinate, terminative, and compositional. We present the basic features of C/spl par/ and show that coherent region is a versatile construct.

The ability to transmit a message securely in the presence of eavesdroppers in a dense wireless network is considered. As with a number of recent schemes, system nodes other than the transmitter and receiver are chosen to generate noise that confuses the eavesdropper. By exploiting the dynamics of the fading, significantly improved performance is achieved beyond that generated from the standard multi-user diversity gain expected from opportunistic relaying. In particular, the node with the best fading characteristics takes responsibility for message relaying, while those whose fading will significantly reduce their impact on the desired communication play the role of noise generators. For a source transmitting to a destination using a set of intermediate relays, we consider the number of eavesdroppers that can be present without the interception of packets, in both the case where the eavesdroppers operate independently and in the case where they collude. The latter case also encompasses the more likely scenario of a single eavesdropper with a sophisticated receiver.
