With the significant advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and powerful computational capabilities, generative AI (GAI) has become a pivotal digital content generation technique for offering superior digital services. However, directing GAI towards desired outputs still suffer the inherent instability of the AI model. In this paper, we design a novel framework that utilizes wireless perception to guide GAI (WiPe-GAI) for providing digital content generation service, i.e., AI-generated content (AIGC), in resource-constrained mobile edge networks. Specifically, we first propose a new sequential multi-scale perception (SMSP) algorithm to predict user skeleton based on the channel state information (CSI) extracted from wireless signals. This prediction then guides GAI to provide users with AIGC, such as virtual character generation. To ensure the efficient operation of the proposed framework in resource constrained networks, we further design a pricing-based incentive mechanism and introduce a diffusion model based approach to generate an optimal pricing strategy for the service provisioning. The strategy maximizes the user’s utility while enhancing the participation of the virtual service provider (VSP) in AIGC provision. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the designed framework in terms of skeleton prediction and optimal pricing strategy generation comparing with other existing solutions. © 2023, CC BY.

Federated learning (FL) is a variant of distributed learning in which multiple clients collaborate to learn a global model without sharing their data with the central server. In real-world scenarios, a client may be involved in training multiple unrelated FL models, which we call multi-model federated learning (MMFL), and the client sampling strategy and task allocation are crucial for improving system performance. In this paper, we propose an optimal sampling method to minimize the variance of global updates for unbiased learning in MMFL systems. The resulting method achieves an average accuracy of over 30 % higher than other baseline methods, as we demonstrate through simulations on real-world federated datasets.

This paper presents a novel method for human gait analysis in cluttered in-home environments using mm-wave radar systems, leveraging novel signal processing and unsupervised machine learning to extract gait parameters accurately amidst obstacles, multipath, and ghosts. Our approach accurately identifies gait parameters such as stride length and walking speed while walking on a curvy path, outperforming traditional techniques. The findings highlight the potential of mm-wave radar for non-invasive, privacy-preserving gait monitoring, with significant implications for healthcare, elderly care, and ambient assisted living. This work advances human motion analysis technology and opens new avenues for in-home monitoring applications.

Cross-Modal Generative Semantic Communications for Mobile AIGC: Joint Semantic Encoding and Prompt engineering

Employing massive Mobile AI-Generated Content (AIGC) Service Providers (MASPs) with powerful models, high-quality AIGC services can become accessible for resource-constrained end users. However, this advancement, referred to as mobile AIGC, also introduces a significant challenge: users should download large AIGC outputs from the MASPs, leading to substantial bandwidth consumption and potential transmission failures. In this paper, we apply cross-modal Generative Semantic Communications (G-SemCom) in mobile AIGC to overcome wireless bandwidth constraints. Specifically, we utilize a series of cross-modal attention maps to indicate the correlation between user prompts and each part of AIGC outputs. In this way, the MASP can analyze the prompt context and filter the most semantically important content efficiently. Only semantic information is transmitted, with which users can recover the entire AIGC output with high quality while saving mobile bandwidth. Since the transmitted information not only preserves the semantics but also prompts the recovery, we formulate a joint semantic encoding and prompt engineering problem to optimize the bandwidth allocation among users. Particularly, we present a human-perceptual metric named Joint Perpetual Similarity and Quality (JPSQ), which is fused by two learning-based measurements regarding semantic similarity and aesthetic quality, respectively. Furthermore, we develop the Attention-aware Deep Diffusion (ADD) algorithm, which learns attention maps and leverages the diffusion process to enhance the environment exploration ability of traditional deep reinforcement learning (DRL). Extensive experiments demonstrate that our proposal can reduce the bandwidth consumption of mobile users by 49.4% on average, with almost no perceptual difference in AIGC output quality. Moreover, the ADD algorithm shows superior performance over baseline DRL methods, with 1.74× higher overall reward. © 2024, CC BY.

Toward Scalable Generative AI via Mixture of Experts in Mobile Edge Networks

The advancement of generative artificial intelligence (GAI) has driven revolutionary applications like ChatGPT. The widespread of these applications relies on the mixture of experts (MoE), which contains multiple experts and selectively engages them for each task to lower operation costs while maintaining performance. Despite MoE, GAI faces challenges in resource consumption when deployed on user devices. This paper proposes mobile edge networks supported MoE-based GAI. We first review the MoE from traditional AI and GAI perspectives, including structure, principles, and applications. We then propose a framework that transfers subtasks to devices in mobile edge networks, aiding GAI model operation on user devices. We discuss challenges in this process and introduce a deep reinforcement learning based algorithm to select edge devices for subtask execution. Experimental results will show that our framework not only facilitates GAI’s deployment on resource-limited devices but also generates higher-quality content compared to methods without edge network support. © 2024, CC BY.

The rapid development of Artificial Intelligence-Generated Content (AIGC) has brought daunting challenges regarding service latency, security, and trustworthiness. Recently, researchers presented the edge AIGC paradigm, effectively optimize the service latency by distributing AIGC services to edge devices. However, AIGC products are still unprotected and vulnerable to tampering and plagiarization. Moreover, as a kind of online non-fungible digital property, the free circulation of AIGC products is hindered by the lack of trustworthiness in open networks. In this article, for the first time, we present a blockchain-empowered framework to manage the lifecycle of edge AIGC products. Specifically, leveraging fraud proof, we first propose a protocol to protect the ownership and copyright of AIGC, called Proof-of-AIGC. Then, we design an incentive mechanism to guarantee the legitimate and timely executions of the funds-AIGC ownership exchanges among anonymous users. Furthermore, we build a multi-weight subjective logic-based reputation scheme, with which AIGC producers can determine which edge service provider is trustworthy and reliable to handle their services. The rapid development of generative AI technologies, including large language models (LLMs), has brought transformative changes to various fields. However, deploying such advanced models on mobile and edge devices remains challenging due to their high computational, memory, communication, and energy requirements. To address these challenges, we propose a model-centric framework for democratizing generative AI deployment on mobile and edge networks. First, we comprehensively review key compact model strategies, such as quantization, model pruning, and knowledge distillation, and present key performance metrics to optimize generative AI for mobile deployment. Next, we provide a focused review of mobile and edge networks, emphasizing the specific challenges and requirements of these environments. We further conduct a case study demonstrating the effectiveness of these strategies by deploying LLMs on real mobile edge devices. Experimental results highlight the practicality of democratized LLMs, with significant improvements in generalization accuracy, hallucination rate, accessibility, and resource consumption. Finally, we discuss potential research directions to further advance the deployment of generative AI in resource-constrained environments. © 2024, CC BY.

AI agents based on multimodal large language models (LLMs) are expected to revolutionize human-computer interaction and offer more personalized assistant services across various domains like healthcare, education, manufacturing, and entertainment. Deploying LLM agents in 6G networks enables users to access previously expensive AI assistant services via mobile devices democratically, thereby reducing interaction latency and better preserving user privacy. Nevertheless, the limited capacity of mobile devices constrains the effectiveness of deploying and executing local LLMs, which necessitates offloading complex tasks to global LLMs running on edge servers during long-horizon interactions. In this article, we propose a split learning system for LLM agents in 6G networks leveraging the collaboration between mobile devices and edge servers, where multiple LLMs with different roles are distributed across mobile devices and edge servers to perform user-agent interactive tasks collaboratively. In the proposed system, LLM agents are split into perception, grounding, and alignment modules, facilitating inter-module communications to meet extended user requirements on 6G network functions, including integrated sensing and communication, digital twins, and task-oriented communications. Furthermore, we introduce a novel model caching algorithm for LLMs within the proposed system to improve model utilization in context, thus reducing network costs of the collaborative mobile and edge LLM agents. © 2024, CC BY.

IMPS: Informative Map Point Selection for Visual-Inertial SLAM

Visual-inertial SLAM (VINS) stands at the forefront of advancements in computer vision, robotics, and autonomous driving, revolutionizing the way we perceive and navigate the world. The typical approach in optimization-based methods for VINS is to estimate camera poses by minimizing the reprojection errors of all corresponding map points. However, not all map points are suitable for accurate pose estimation. Some map points introduce noise and can compromise the accuracy of the estimation. Current methods primarily focus on removing 2D noise points, which proves to be ineffective since triangulation can increase the uncertainty of map points. To address this problem, we propose a new method for Informative Map Point Selection (IMPS) in VINS systems. IMPS identifies the most informative map points by utilizing mutual and geometric information as the optimization target. We integrate IMPS into a VINS system and evaluate its performance using publicly available EuRoC, TUM and M2DGR datasets, as well as our own data. Experimental results demonstrate that our method surpasses existing VINS methods and achieves state-of-the-art pose estimation performance. Importantly, IMPS functions as an independent module with strong generalization capabilities, allowing for easy integration into other VINS systems and enhancing pose estimation performance. This integration not only elevates pose estimation accuracy but also holds great promise for advancing applications in intelligent driving and unmanned systems.
