Optimizing various wireless user tasks poses a significant challenge for networking systems because of the expanding range of user requirements. Despite advancements in Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), the need for customized optimization tasks for individual users complicates developing and applying numerous DRL models, leading to substantial computation resource and energy consumption and can lead to inconsistent outcomes. To address this issue, we propose a novel approach utilizing a Mixture of Experts (MoE) framework, augmented with Large Language Models (LLMs), to analyze user objectives and constraints effectively, select specialized DRL experts, and weigh each decision from the participating experts. Specifically, we develop a gate network to oversee the expert models, allowing a collective of experts to tackle a wide array of new tasks. Furthermore, we innovatively substitute the traditional gate network with an LLM, leveraging its advanced reasoning capabilities to manage expert model selection for joint decisions. Our proposed method reduces the need to train new DRL models for each unique optimization problem, decreasing energy consumption and AI model implementation costs. The LLMenabled MoE approach is validated through a general maze navigation task and a specific network service provider utility maximization task, demonstrating its effectiveness and practical applicability in optimizing complex networking systems.

Background: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common neuropsychiatric disorder in schoolchildren. ADHD diagnoses are generally made based on criteria from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition. The diagnosis is made clinically based on observation and information provided by parents and teachers, which is highly subjective and can lead to disparate results. Considering that hyperactivity is one of the main symptoms of ADHD, the inaccuracy of ADHD diagnosis based on subjective criteria necessitates the identification of a method to objectively diagnose ADHD. Methods: In this study, a medical chair containing a piezoelectric material was applied to objectively analyze movements of patients with ADHD, which were compared with those of patients without ADHD. This study enrolled 62 patients—31 patients with ADHD and 31 patients without ADHD. During the clinical evaluation, participants’ movements were recorded by the piezoelectric material for analysis. The variance, zero-crossing rate, and high energy rate of movements were subsequently analyzed. Results: The results revealed that the variance, zero-crossing rate, and high energy rate were significantly higher in patients with ADHD than in those without ADHD. Classification performance was excellent in both groups, with the area under the curve as high as 98.00%. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that the use of a smart chair equipped with piezoelectric material is an objective and potentially useful method for supporting the diagnosis of ADHD. © 2022 Taiwan Pediatric Association

A Multifunctional Array System Based on Adjustable-Phase Antenna for Wireless Communications

In this work, an innovative method for controlling the current distribution of the radiating patch by adjusting the input phase is investigated to achieve both pattern and polarization reconfigurable characteristics for the multifunction. A compact and low-profile antenna with four fed ports is designed to implement the proposed method, which can operate linear, right-hand circular polarization (RHCP) and left-hand circular polarization (LHCP) with different beam directions in the operating band from 4.0 to 5.0 GHz. Even more, a four-by-four passive planar array is designed and fabricated based on this antenna element, which can scan the coverage of ±70° with low gain fluctuation and low sidelobe with dual-polarization. Meanwhile, it can realize the wide-angle scanning capability up to ±60°with low sidelobe with RHCP and LHCP. More important, the dual- and triple-beam with different directions can be obtained by the proposed array. Good agreement has been shown between measured and simulated results. Therefore, the proposed antenna is a good solution for wireless communication systems because of its simple-configuration, multifunction, and beamforming capability. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. As we expect that the presence of autonomous robots in our everyday life will increase, we must consider that people will have not only to accept robots to be a fundamental part of their lives, but they will also have to trust them to reliably and securely engage them in collaborative tasks. Several studies showed that robots are more comfortable interacting with robots that respect social conventions. However, it is still not clear if a robot that expresses social conventions will gain more favourably people's trust. In this study, we aimed to assess whether the use of social behaviours and natural communications can affect humans' sense of trust and companionship towards the robots. We conducted a between-subjects study where participants' trust was tested in three scenarios with increasing trust criticality (low, medium, high) in which they interacted either with a social or a non-social robot. Our findings showed that participants trusted equally a social and non-social robot in the low and medium consequences scenario. On the contrary, we observed that participants' choices of trusting the robot in a higher sensitive task was affected more by a robot that expressed social cues with a consequent decrease of their trust in the robot.

Quantum-Secured Space-Air-Ground Integrated Networks: Concept, Framework, and Case Study

In the upcoming 6G era, existing terrestrial networks have evolved toward space-air-ground integrated networks (SAGIN), providing ultra-high data rates, seamless network coverage, and ubiquitous intelligence for communications of applications and services. However, conventional communications in SAGIN still face data confidentiality issues. Fortunately, the concept of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) over SAGIN is able to provide information-theoretic security for secure communications in SAGIN with quantum cryptography. Therefore, in this paper, we propose the quantum-secured SAGIN which is feasible to achieve proven secure communications using quantum mechanics to protect data channels between space, air, and ground nodes. Moreover, we propose a universal QKD service provisioning framework to minimize the cost of QKD services under the uncertainty and dynamics of communications in quantum-secured SAGIN. In this framework, fiber-based QKD services are deployed in passive optical networks with the advantages of low loss and high stability. Moreover, the widely covered and flexible satellite- and UAV-based QKD services are provisioned as a supplement during the real-time data transmission phase. Finally, to examine the effectiveness of the proposed concept and framework, a case study of quantum-secured SAGIN in the Metaverse is conducted where uncertain and dynamic factors of the secure communications in Metaverse applications are effectively resolved in the proposed framework. © 2022, CC BY.

Federated edge learning (FEL) is a promising paradigm of distributed machine learning that can preserve data privacy while training the global model collaboratively. However, FEL is still facing model confidentiality issues due to eavesdropping risks of exchanging cryptographic keys through traditional encryption schemes. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a hierarchical architecture for quantum-secured FEL systems with ideal security based on the quantum key distribution (QKD) to facilitate public key and model encryption against eavesdropping attacks. Specifically, we propose a stochastic resource allocation model for efficient QKD to encrypt FEL keys and models. In FEL systems, remote FEL workers are connected to cluster heads via quantum-secured channels to train an aggregated global model collaboratively. However, due to the unpredictable number of workers at each location, the demand for secret-key rates to support secure model transmission to the server is unpredictable. The proposed systems need to efficiently allocate limited QKD resources (i.e., wavelengths) such that the total cost is minimized in the presence of stochastic demand by formulating the optimization problem for the proposed architecture as a stochastic programming model. To this end, we propose a federated reinforcement learning-based resource allocation scheme to solve the proposed model without complete state information. The proposed scheme enables QKD managers and controllers to train a global QKD resource allocation policy while keeping their private experiences local. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed schemes can successfully achieve the cost-minimizing objective under uncertain demand while improving the training efficiency by about 50% compared to state-of-the-art schemes. © 2022, CC BY.

This paper studies a new and challenging wireless surveillance problem where a legitimate monitor attempts to eavesdrop two suspicious communication links simultaneously. To facilitate concurrent eavesdropping, our multi-antenna legitimate monitor employs a proactive eavesdropping via jamming approach, by selectively jamming suspicious receivers to lower the transmission rates of the target links. In particular, we are interested in characterizing the achievable eavesdropping rate region for the minimum-mean-squared-error (MMSE) receiver case, by optimizing the legitimate monitor's jamming transmit covariance matrix subject to its power budget. As the monitor cannot hear more than what suspicious links transmit, the achievable eavesdropping rate region is essentially the intersection of the achievable rate region for the two suspicious links and that for the two eavesdropping links. The former region can be purposely altered by the monitor's jamming transmit covariance matrix, whereas the latter region is fixed when the MMSE receiver is employed. Therefore, we first analytically characterize the achievable rate region for the two suspicious links via optimizing the jamming transmit covariance matrix and then obtain the achievable eavesdropping rate region for the MMSE receiver case. In addition, we also consider the MMSE with successive interference cancellation (MMSE-SIC) receiver case and characterize the corresponding achievable eavesdropping rate region by jointly optimizing the time-sharing factor between different decoding orders. Furthermore, extensions to the imperfect channel state information case and the more than two suspicious links scenario are also examined. Finally, numerical results are provided to corroborate our analysis and evaluate the eavesdropping performance. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

The surge in connected devices in 6G with typical complex tasks requiring multi-user cooperation, such as smart agriculture and smart cities, poses significant challenges to unsustainable traditional communication. Fortunately, the booming artificial intelligence technology and the growing computational power of devices offer a promising 6G enabler: semantic communication (SemCom). However, existing deep learning-based SemCom paradigms struggle to extend to multi-user scenarios due to its increasing model size with the growing number of users and its limited compatibility with complex communication environments. Consequently, to truly empower 6G networks with this critical technology, this article rethinks generative SemCom for multi-user system and proposes a novel framework called "M-GSC" with the large language model (LLM) as the shared knowledge base (SKB). The LLM-based SKB plays three critical roles, that is, complex task decomposition, semantic representation specification, and semantic translation and mapping, for complex tasks, spawning a series of benefits such as semantic encoding standardization and semantic decoding personalization. Meanwhile, to enhance the performance of M-GSC framework, we highlight three optimization strategies unique to this framework: extending the LLM-based SKB into a multi-agent LLM system, offloading semantic encoding and decoding, and managing communication and computational resources. Finally, a case study is conducted to demonstrate the preliminary validation on the effectiveness of the M-GSC framework in terms of efficient decoding offloading. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. Lunar habitation missions are currently being planned to have astronauts return to the moon by the mid 2020’s with a sustained lunar presence by the end of the decade. The various landed modules needed to support the missions are expected to be distributed around Shackleton Crater at distances ranging from 1 to 15 km and with power needs ranging from 10 kW to 50 kW. Current plans call for a solar array to be installed on the rim of the crater that receives near-constant sunlight year around with a power distribution system that transfers power from the source to consumers. This paper details several power distribution systems: DC transmission lines, radio frequency power beaming, and optical power beaming. Sizing algorithms for each of these distributions systems along with their necessary subsystems were developed from literature and subject matter expertise input. Several experiments were then conducted to determine the performance of the systems along with their sensitivities to changes in assumptions for various sub-components. The defined Figures of Merit enable mission designers to select the best power distribution system for each possible power consumer mission scenario. The experimental results were analyzed and compiled into a set of figures that highlight the conditions for which a certain system outperforms the other. © 2021, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. Security assessment and impact analysis of cyberattacks in integrated T&D power systems

In this paper, we examine the impact of cyberattacks in an integrated transmission and distribution (T&D) power grid model with distributed energy resource (DER) integration. We adopt the OCTAVE Allegro methodology to identify critical system assets, enumerate potential threats, analyze, and prioritize risks for threat scenarios. Based on the analysis, attack strategies and exploitation scenarios are identified which could lead to system compromise. Specifically, we investigate the impact of data integrity attacks in inverted-based solar PV controllers, control signal blocking attacks in protective switches and breakers, and coordinated monitoring and switching time-delay attacks.
