Lab-on-CMOS chips (LOCMOS) are sophisticated miniaturized analysis tools based on integrated circuit (IC) microchips performing various laboratory functions. We have developed a low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) package for a LOCMOS application regarding cytotoxicity assessment of nanomaterials. The LTCC packaged capacitance sensor chip is designed for long-term cell viability monitoring during nanoparticle exposure. The introduced LTCC package utilizes the flip chip bonding technique, and it is biocompatible as well as able to withstand the environmental conditions required to maintain mammalian cell culture directly on the surface of a complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) integrated circuit.

Multiple-target tracking with a microphone array is often addressed via the Bayesian filtering framework. For compact arrays, each source is represented by its direction-of-arrival (DOA), which evolves on the unit sphere. The unique topology of this space leads to analytical intractabilities that are often resolved via costly particle-based methods. In this paper, we derive a novel, deterministic inference algorithm called the von Mises-Fisher Filter (vMFF) for a dynamical system model defined on the sphere, and extend it to the multi-source scenario in the Factorial vMFF (FvMFF). We apply sensor fusion and probabilistic data association techniques to handle clutter and data association ambiguities in the observation set. We show that the vMFF combines the computational efficiency of a Kalman filter with the tracking accuracy of a particle filter to perform well across all noise levels. Finally, we apply the FvMFF to track multiple speakers in a reverberant environment.

We study the economic value of energy storage operated by a consumer who faces fluctuating electricity prices and seeks to reduce its energy costs. The value of storage is defined as the consumer's net benefit obtained by optimally operating the storage. We formulate the operation problem as a dynamic program. For a general setting with random electricity prices and stochastic demand, we show that by solving a sequence of (deterministic) convex optimization problems one can obtain an optimal operation policy as well as the value of storage. For an important special case where the consumer is faced with deterministic time-variant prices and (deterministic) inelastic demand, we propose a simple greedy algorithm that simultaneously computes the optimal operation policy and the economic value of a finite-capacity electric storage. We employ the proposed algorithm to numerically explore the value of storage under different pricing mechanisms.

Within agile software development there is a growing concern with how development organizations can integrate usability work into agile practices. The concern occurs as frustration experienced in practice by agile developers and usability designers, and it also occurs as a gap in the research literature. With this paper we report from a case study in a software company that is committed to agile development, to usability work, and to their integration. The theoretical starting point is an initial framework that has been elicited from the research literature;and the paper's contribution is an extension and modification of the initial framework based on our case study results. The resulting framework points to three enablers (attitudes, compromises, skills), three tasks (upfront design, low-fi prototyping, iterative evaluating), and three alternative modes of collaboration/work organization (parallel, embedded, fully integrated) in agile usability practices. In addition, end-user involvement may vary. The paper contributes by extending existing frameworks on integration and thus providing better explanations for practitioners and researchers of integration of usability.

Medical surgeries in the space environment, including long term space travel (e.g., to Mars) and permanent presence on other planetary bodies (e.g., Moon and Mars), are posing an inherent logistical, and in the absence of appropriately trained personnel (i.e., surgeons), even a potentially life-threatening challenge. As a potential mitigation the use of an existing surgical trainer tool that would allow crewmembers to acquire basic surgical skills is proposed, and to train space station personnel both in space and on the Moon and Mars to hone these skills long-term. Furthermore, this tool would potentially allow for tele-conducted surgeries, akin to the da Vinci Surgical System, controlled from Earth but executed onboard, e.g., the International Space Station. On Earth the surgical trainer can be used to train surgeons and flight surgeons. The efficiency of any surgical training system plays a significant role in its reduction of operative risks and stress associated with insufficient experience of the trainee. The primary goal of such systems is to raise the trainee to a higher level of proficiency without putting patients at risk in the operating room. The prototype for the computer Assisted Surgical Trainer (CAST) being developed at the University of Arizona realizes an optimal motion-planning algorithm. The underlying system consists of mechanical fixtures equipped with encoders and DC motors. This hardware provides a means to accurately track the tip movements of laparoscopic instruments used in minimally invasive surgery. Furthermore it provides haptic and visual feedback to trainees by using a PID controller and augmented reality visualization. Examples of surgical guidance and the improvement of surgeon performance over time using CAST are presented.

In this paper, we report on a recent interface design and evaluation process for a new knee and hip automatic physiotherapy assistant and rehabilitation system (ARS). Interface design was concurrent with the development of ARS. The ARS has the potential to improve the automation of rehabilitation treatments, by providing quantitative measures of a patient’s motion. However, the complexity of rehabilitation information available to the therapist has increased with this additional information. We applied Ecological Interface design (EID) to understand the domain of physiotherapy and the role of the automation. Results of a Work Domain Analysis (WDA) revealed new functions and constraints in rehabilitation now accessible through the ARS, and provided the design requirements for interface design. A novel interface was designed which is currently undergoing evaluation to see if it improves the quality and experience of physiotherapy. This study provides an example of the advantages of using EID at the early phase of design, and how to apply EID to a system of increasing automaticity.
