A balanced-to-single-ended (BTSE) power divider is proposed in this paper. Its input is a differential pair while both the outputs are single-ended ports. It can replace the cascade of a balun and a conventional power divider. The characteristics requirements of a two-way BTSE power divider with equal power division are first derived, and then a prototype is designed for 2.0 GHz. In order to construct the component compactly, a short-ended four-wire coupled line and T-shaped sections are utilized to realize a -90° transmission line and a phase inverter, respectively. The developed prototype occupies an area of 0.077 λ g 2 , where λ g is the guided wavelength of central frequency. It provides all the desired performances within the operating bandwidth of 25%, with low insertion loss and good balance also achieved.

In this paper, we provide a constructive methodology for the design of decentralized control laws for a class of interconnected retarded systems subject to actuator disturbances. We consider Control Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals for only subsystems, thus reducing the difficulty with respect to finding an overall functional, and then provide a controller which, by means of a small-gain condition, guarantees practical input-to-state stability with respect to disturbances. If the disturbances are bounded, the controller allows to drive the system variables to any small neighborhood of the origin, by suitably tuning a control parameter.

State-of-the-art and upcoming camera-driven, implanted artificial vision systems provide only tens to hundreds of electrodes, affording only limited visual perception for blind subjects. Therefore, real time image processing is crucial to enhance and optimize this limited perception. Since tens or hundreds of pixels/electrodes allow only for a very crude approximation of the typically megapixel optical resolution of the external camera image feed, the preservation and enhancement of contrast differences and transitions, such as edges, are especially important compared to picture details such as object texture. An Artificial Vision Support System (AVS2) is devised that displays the captured video stream in a pixelation conforming to the dimension of the epi-retinal implant electrode array. AVS2, using efficient image processing modules, modifies the captured video stream in real time, enhancing 'present but hidden' objects to overcome inadequacies or extremes in the camera imagery. As a result, visual prosthesis carriers may now be able to discern such objects in their 'field-of-view', thus enabling mobility in environments that would otherwise be too hazardous to navigate. The image processing modules can be engaged repeatedly in a user-defined order, which is a unique capability. AVS2 is directly applicable to any artificial vision system that is based on an imaging modality (video, infrared, sound, ultrasound, microwave, radar, etc.) as the first step in the stimulation/processing cascade, such as: retinal implants (i.e. epi-retinal, sub-retinal, suprachoroidal), optic nerve implants, cortical implants, electric tongue stimulators, or tactile stimulators. © 2014 Informa UK Ltd. Integrating an auxiliary (AUX) power supply into LED drivers is a popular trend to facilitate LED luminaire system design and reduce system cost and complexity. This AUX power supply can be used to power LED fixture cooling, lighting controller or other suitable electronic devices. In this paper, a cost effective architecture based on Flyback topology is proposed for both constant current (CC) output for LED drive and constant voltage (CV) output for AUX supply. A novel nonlinear ramp based control scheme is invented to decouple the main CC power train from the CV AUX supply and avoid LED output flickering. Small signal modeling is presented to highlight the advantages of this control scheme over conventional peak current mode control. This scheme has been implemented successfully for a 40W dimmable LED driver with a 12V 3W AUX supply.

A compact ultra-wideband (UWB) bandpass filter with an inherent notched band and steep slopes has been presented and implemented with the low temperature cofired ceramic technology. The filter is realized by a stepped-impedance T-shaped resonator (SITR) coupled to a pair of quarter-wavelength input/output feed-lines. The proposed SITR can facilitate not only a notched band, but also sharp roll-off characteristics. Measured results agree well with the HFSS simulated results. The whole size of the UWB filter is only 6.0×6.0×1.92 mm 3 .

A large fraction of the total electric load is comprised of end-use devices whose demand is inherently deferrable in time. While this latent flexibility in demand can be leveraged to absorb variability in supply from renewable generation, the challenge lies in designing incentives to induce the desired response in demand. In the following, we study a novel forward market, where consumers consent to deferred service of pre-specified loads in exchange for a reduced per-unit price for energy. The longer a customer is willing to defer, the larger the reduction in price. The proposed deadline-differentiated forward contract provides a guarantee on the aggregate quantity to be delivered by a consumer-specified deadline. Under the earliest-deadline-first (EDF) scheduling policy, which is shown to be optimal for the supplier, we explicitly characterize differentiated prices yielding an efficient competitive equilibrium between supply and demand. We also show that such prices are incentive compatible (IC) in that every consumer would like to reveal her true deadline type to the supplier, provided that the other consumers are truth-telling.

A novel approach to the conventional lab component of introductory and advanced control courses is presented. The technique integrates theoretical analysis and design concepts in the context of an automotive hardware in the loop (HIL) application employing game style interactive, immersive 3D display, and context-rich learning objectives and outcomes, all integrated with a more traditional DC motor-based hardware plant. Actual implementation experiences for an undergraduate and graduate course at the University of Toronto indicates enhanced motivation and greater appreciation of contemporary control engineering practice among students.

With increasing usage of mobile devices to watch mobile video, the battery consumption of mobile devices will be dominated by video delivery and playback. In this paper, we develop battery efficient video delivery techniques that vary video transmission rate dynamically depending on battery and buffer levels of the mobile device, the channel conditions experienced, and video quality requirements while maximizing battery life and ensuring user experience. The proposed dynamic video rate adaptation techniques enable the base station to adapt the Multi Input Multi Output (MIMO) transceiver configurations to reduce battery current required by MIMO components on the mobile device. The proposed techniques also make the base station stop video transmission opportunistically, thereby eliminating the battery load imposed by the mobile MIMO components. Experiments conducted under various network conditions for various video download profiles show that more than 50% improvement in battery lifetime is possible in comparison to conventional video download techniques not aware of battery.
