Motivated by example problems arising in energy, environment and service systems, the panelists will review those systems, man and cybernetics methods that are essential in dealing with these problems. The focus will be on new model-based and computational techniques, including approaches concerned with systems of systems, conflict resolution and adaptive real-time decision making. Although the organizers will initially serve as panel presenters, it is expected that they will also act as facilitators in an ensuing discussion among conference attendees who are cordially invited to participate in this specially organized panel.

In this paper, we consider identifying Auto Regressive with eXternal input (ARX) models for both Linear Time-Invariant (LTI) and Linear Time-Variant (LTV) systems. We aim at doing the identification from the smallest possible number of observations. This is inspired by the field of Compressive Sensing (CS), and for this reason, we call this problem Compressive System Identification (CSI). In the case of LTI ARX systems, a system with a large number of inputs and unknown input delays on each channel can require a model structure with a large number of parameters, unless input delay estimation is performed. Since the complexity of input delay estimation increases exponentially in the number of inputs, this can be difficult for high dimensional systems. We show that in cases where the LTI system has possibly many inputs with different unknown delays, simultaneous ARX identification and input delay estimation is possible from few observations, even though this leaves an apparently ill-conditioned identification problem. We discuss identification guarantees and support our proposed method with simulations. We also consider identifying LTV ARX models. In particular, we consider systems with parameters that change only at a few time instants in a piecewise-constant manner where neither the change moments nor the number of changes is known a priori. The main technical novelty of our approach is in casting the identification problem as recovery of a block-sparse signal from an underdetermined set of linear equations. We suggest a random sampling approach for LTV identification, address the issue of identifiability and again support our approach with illustrative simulations.

This paper elaborates on the performance of orthogonal space-time block codes (STBCs) for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems operating in generalized-K fading conditions. The considered fading model is generic since it intimately encompasses both small-scale fading (modeled via the Nakagami-m distribution) and large-scale fading (modeled via the gamma distribution). In the following, new exact analytical expressions are derived for the Shannon capacity along with asymptotic expressions in the high and low Signal-to-Noise ratio (SNR) regimes. We also present exact tractable expressions followed by first-order expansions for the marginal outage probability and symbol error rate (SER); further, we quantify the performance of STBCs in terms of diversity order and coding gain. The derived analytical expressions are validated via a set of Monte-Carlo simulations which also demonstrate the implications of the model parameters on the overall performance.

We present a method for coding speech signals for the simulation of a cochlear implant. The method is based on a wavelet packet decomposition strategy. We used wavelet packet db4 for 7 levels, generated a series of channels with bandwidths exactly the same as nucleus device, and applied an input stimulus to each channel. The processed signal was then reconstructed and compared to the original signal, which preserved the contents to a high percentage. Finally, performance of the wavelet packet decomposition in terms of computational complexity was compared to other commonly used strategies in cochlear implants. The results showed the power of this method in processing of the input signal for implant users with less complexity than other methods, while maintaining the contents of the input signal to a very good extent.

Abstract A problem of assessing stability of retarded dynamical networks is solved in this paper. Subsystems are assumed to be integral input-to-state stable (iISS). Time-delays are allowed to reside in both subsystems and interconnection channels, and may be both discrete and distributed. No assumption is made on the interconnection topology. This paper develops a small-gain methodology for constructing a Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional of such a network.

Energy constraint is a critical hurdle hindering the practical deployment of long-term wireless sensor network applications. Turning off (i.e., duty cycling) sensors could reduce energy consumption, however at the cost of low sensing fidelity due to sensing gaps introduced. Existing techniques have studied how to collaboratively reduce the sensing gap in space and time, however none of them provides a rigorous approach to confine sensing error within desirable bounds. In this work, we propose a collaborative scheme called CIES, based on the novel concept of error inference between collaborative sensor pairs. Within a node, we use a sensing probability bound to control tolerable sensing error. Within a neighborhood, nodes can trigger additional sensing activities of other nodes when inferred sensing error has aggregately exceed the tolerance. We conducted simulations to investigate system performance using historical soil temperature data in Wisconsin-Minnesota area. The simulation results demonstrate that the system error is confined within the specified error tolerance bounds and that a maximum of 60 percent of the energy savings can be achieved, when the CIES is compared to several fixed probability sensing schemes such as eSense. We further validated the simulation and algorithms by constructing a lab test-bench to emulate actual environment monitoring applications. The results show that our approach is effective and efficient in tracking the dramatic temperature shift in highly dynamic environments.

Electric and hybrid electric vehicles (EV/HEV) have the advantage of being more environmentally friendly and quieter than internal combustion engine vehicles. However, reduced noise can also lead to potentially dangerous situations for pedestrians when an oncoming vehicle is inaudible due to background noise (e.g. Kerber and Fastl, internoise 2007). The installation of devices that produce warning sounds in vehicles to alert pedestrians is being considered in various countries. Because this is a global topic, it is of vital interest to determine whether there exist cross-cultural differences. Pilot studies on this topic were performed in Japan (Yamauchi et al., internoise 2010) and, with improved input devices and test procedure, in Germany (Menzel et al., DAGA 2011). The level of three possible warning sounds (engine noise, car horn, and band-pass noise) were adjusted in presence of four different urban background sounds (busy street, residential area, heavy traffic, and shopping area) in laboratory environments. In the first part of the experiments, subjects were asked to adjust the level of the warning sounds so that they were clearly audible and could be reliably detected in the background noise. In the second part the goal was to adjust the level so that the warning sounds were just audible. The results of the adjustments showed no significant difference between the two subjects groups. The results were discussed in view of inter-individual and intraindividual differences. Moreover, the results were compared to current recommendations for sound levels of warning sounds in quiet vehicles.

A significant part of current attacks on the Internet comes from compromised hosts that, usually, take part in botnets. Even though bots themselves can be distributed all over the world, there is evidence that most of the malicious hosts are, in fact, concentrated in small fractions of the IP address space, on certain networks. Based on that, the Bad Neighborhood concept was introduced. The general idea of Bad Neighborhoods is to rate a subnetwork by the number of malicious hosts that have been observed in that subnetwork. Even though Bad Neighborhoods were successfully employed in mail filtering, the very concept was not investigated in further details. Therefore, in this work we provide a closer look on it, by proposing four definitions for spam-based Bad Neighborhoods that take into account the way spammers operate. We apply the definitions to real world data sets and show that they provide valuable insight into the behavior of spammers and the networks hosting them. Among our findings, we show that 10% of the Bad Neighborhoods are responsible for the majority of spam.

Robust control problems for nonlinear systems are usually formulated as L 2 -induced norm minimization problems and it is known that those problems are reduced to the solvability of Hamilton-Jacobi equations. However, in the case of bilinear systems the usual L 2 -induced norm minimization problem leads to an obvious solution (the zero input). To avoid the obvious solution Simizu et al. (1997) introduced nonlinear weights on the evaluated signal and proposed a design method using linearization of the state-dependent matrix Riccati inequality derived from the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. In contrast to this, the purpose of the present paper is to propose a new design method using SOS (Sum-of-Squares) optimization technique without linearization.

The robust H ∞ control problem for a class of uncertain switched linear systems by using the variable structure control is investigated. A robust H ∞ single sliding surface is shown to exist as long as a convex combination of the subsystems of the switched system is robustly stabilizable with disturbance attenuation level γ. A switching law is constructed via the single Lyapunov function technique. Variable structure controllers of subsystems are designed so as the resulting closed-loop system guarantees the robust H ∞ performance. An illustrative example and simulation results are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design method.
