We propose a new distributed alarm correlation and fault identification in computer networks. The managed network is divided into a disjoint management domains and each management domain is assigned a dedicated intelligent agent. The intelligent agent is responsible for collecting, analyzing, and correlating alarms emitted form emitted from its constituent entities in its domain. In the framework of Dempster-Shafer evidence theory, each agent perceives each alarm as a piece of evidence in the occurrence of a certain fault hypothesis and correlates the received alarms into a single alarm called local composite alarm, which encapsulates the agent's partial view of the current status of the managed system. While the alarm correlation process is performed locally, each intelligent agent is able to correlate its alarms globally. These local composite alarms are, in turn, sent to a higher agent whose task is to fuse these alarms and form a global view of operation status of the running network. Extensive experimentations have demonstrated that the proposed approach is more alarm loss tolerant than the codebook based approaches and hence shown its effectiveness in a usually noisy network environment. © 2010 IEEE.

We present a modified Temporal Conditional Random Fields framework for modeling and predicting object motion. To facilitate such a powerful graphical model with prediction and come up with a CRF-based predictor, we propose a set of new temporal relations for object tracking, with feature functions such as optical flow (calculated among consequent frames). We evaluate our proposed Temporal Conditional Random Field method with real and synthetic data sequences and will show that the TCRF prediction is nearly equivalent with result of template matching. Experimental results show that our proposed method estimates future target state with zero error until target dynamic changes. Our proposed modified CRF method with simple and easy to implement feature functions, can learn any target dynamic, thus, it can predict next state of target with zero error. © 2010 IEEE.

Due to advancements in lighting technologies new opportunities for application emerge. In this paper an interdisciplinary study towards the development of adaptive lighting environments is presented. An implementation of an adaptive lighting environment is made in the domain of office work. For evaluation, experts from the domains of human-system interaction, activity and context recognition, and system architecture design are interviewed. Contributions are made with regard to the implementation of the adaptive lighting in office environments and an evaluation method that is in line with the interdisciplinary approach. From the evaluation method insights in the fields of human-computer interaction, activity and context recognition and system architecture and (wireless) networking and in topics that span across these fields are gained.

The World Wide Web has created a new media for mass marketing that can also be highly customized to online customers' needs and expectations. Recommender systems (RS) play an important role in this area. Here, we aim to establish a genre-based collaborative RS to automatically suggest and rank a list of appropriate items (movies) to a user based on the user profile and the past voting patterns of other users with similar tastes. The contribution of this paper is using genre based information in a hybrid fuzzy-Bayesian network collaborative RS. The interest to the different genres is computed based on a hybrid user model. The similarity of likeminded users according to the fuzzy distance and also Pearson correlation coefficient is involved in a Bayesian network. © 2010 IEEE.

In this paper, a novel power spectrum density (PSD) estimation approach is proposed for accurate and efficient wideband spectrum sensing in Cognitive Radio (CR) systems. Based on the observed signal from a wideband receiver, the goal of determining the fluctuation-free signal PSD is formulated as a constrained Bayesian estimation problem, subject to spectral variation constraints between neighboring spectral frequencies. The extracted signal PSD obtained using the proposed approach can then used in the energy detection process to make informed decisions with regards to the identification of free spectrum resources for opportunistic access by the CR. Experimental results using Monte Carlo simulations and real terrestrial digital TV (DTV) signal acquisitions show that the proposed approach allows for accurate PSD computation using wideband receivers under unknown noise and fluctuation conditions. Therefore, there is great potential for integrating the proposed method into existing energy detection methods for more accurate and efficient wideband spectrum sensing in CR systems under unknown noise and channel conditions. ©2010 IEEE.

The optimal power flow (OPF) problem is nonconvex and generally hard to solve. We provide a sufficient condition under which the OPF problem is equivalent to a convex problem and therefore is efficiently solvable. Specifically, we prove that the dual of OPF is a semidefinite program and our sufficient condition guarantees that the duality gap is zero and a globally optimal solution of OPF is recoverable from a dual optimal solution. This sufficient condition is satisfied by standard IEEE benchmark systems with 14, 30, 57, 118 and 300 buses after small resistance (10-5 per unit) is added to every transformer that originally assumes zero resistance. We justify why the condition might hold widely in practice from algebraic and geometric perspectives. The main underlying reason is that physical quantities such as resistance, capacitance and inductance, are all positive. ©2010 IEEE.

This paper is concerned with understanding the connection between the existing Internet congestion control algorithms and the optimal control theory. The available resource allocation controllers are mainly devised to derive the state of the system to a desired equilibrium point and, therefore, they are oblivious to the transient behavior of the closed-loop system. To take into account the real-time performance of the system, rather than merely its steady-state performance, the congestion control problem should be solved by maximizing a proper utility functional as opposed to a utility function. For this reason, this work aims to investigate what utility functionals the existing congestion control algorithms maximize. In particular, it is shown that there exist meaningful utility functionals whose maximization leads to the celebrated primal, dual and primal/dual algorithms. An implication of this result is that a real network problem may be solved by regarding it as an optimal control problem on which some practical constraints, such as a real-time link capacity constraint, are imposed. ©2010 IEEE.

This paper aims to design a robust H∞control system against time invariant polytopic uncertainties. In general, such robust control problems are described by parameter dependent bilinear matrix inequality (PDBMI) problems which are not tractable numerically and there are few efficient methods for solving them. In this paper, we propose an iterative approach to the robust H∞controller synthesis problems, which constructs a sequence of infeasible controllers. The feature of our approach is to be able to use any controller variables which may not be a robust stabilizing controller as an initial point. The efficiency of our approach is shown by a numerical example. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper is concerned with the robust regional pole placement control problem against time invariant polytopic uncertainties. In this paper we propose an iterative approach to design a fixed-order output feedback controller achieving the robust regional pole placement. The features of our approach are to be able to use any controller variables as an initial point and to construct a controller sequence approaching a feasible region from the outside. Numerical examples are given to show the efficiency of our approach.

The aim of this research is to investigate the possibility of using medical image information to extract unique features and classify different patients' organ tissues, such as the prostate, based on concepts related to what is already done in iris recognition. This paper therefore presents a new approach in medical imaging, an organ recognition system, tested on a standard database of grey scale prostate images in order to validate its performance. In this research, features of the prostate image were encoded by convolving the normalized organ region with a 2D Gabor filter and then quantizing its phase in order to produce a bit-wise biometric template. Our experiments prove that prostate patterns have a low degree of freedom to be used in organ recognition systems and inter-class and intraclass distributions are highly correlated. However, there are still open issues that need to be addressed for future work on organ recognition, including precise segmentation and intensive computation cost. © 2010 IEEE.
