In this research, we introduced CarettaKids into the social context of a classroom environment to evaluate whether integration of personal and shared spaces can help promote students' participation in synchronous/co-located interactions in the classroom and deepen their understanding of subject matter. Analysis of videotaped interactions and pre- and posttests clarified the following three points. (1) Students who used CarettaKids presented the simulation results and rules for object arrangement they worked out individually in their respective personal space, by using CarettaKids' function of projecting object arrangements and simulation results from a personal digital assistant onto a sensing board. (2) Many of the students who used CarettaKids examined individually generated ideas collaboratively in the shared space. The patterns of collaborative examination are: (a) Induce a rule for object arrangement from object arrangements devised in personal spaces;(b) Deduce a new object arrangement from the rules discovered in the personal spaces;and (c) Refine the rules discovered in the personal spaces through group discussion. (3) Students who used CarettaKids not only considered all of the three factors, i.e. residential area, industrial area and forest area, but also understood relations between these factors, thereby deepening their understanding of city planning that takes environmental and financial aspects into consideration. We suggest that the degree to which students deepen their understanding is affected by the presence or absence of collaborative examination of individually generated ideas in the shared space. © 2009 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.

At the time of the next URSI General Assembly in Istanbul, Turkey, it will have been 20 years since Commission K became the International Union of Radio Science (URSI) Commission on Electromagnetics in Biology and Medicine. The latest Commission of URSI held its inaugural scientific sessions at the XXIVth URSI General Assembly, hosted by the historic capital city of Japan, Kyoto, in 1993. How did all of this come about? The answer is given in this paper, written by three radio scientists who were there at the beginning. It also traces the role of URSI in the development of this “new” field of science.

In this paper, we study T-matching networks that are commonly used for the efficient matching of UHF tags. In order to analyze relationship between T-matching geometry and antenna impedance, we interpret the transformer circuit as an equivalent circuit depending on the design parameters of the circuit. From the parametric study of the T-matching, we derive an optimized topology which is able to overcome electrically change of the geometry resulted from material loading. Next, based on the previous study, we design two types of tag antennas for practical item-level RFID applications that require the discrimination different objects. We calculate theoretically the minimum operating power of tags based on the computed antenna characteristics, antenna impedance, directivity, efficiency, regarding various dielectric constants. To verify the performance of the developed tags in practical conditions, we measure the minimum required power to activate tags on multiple objects in conjunction with commercial measurement system. As a result, the designed tags present almost consistent readability on materials from low to high dielectric constant. Thus, the results clearly verify that the appropriate T-matching geometry provides consistent readability in practical UHF RFID tags.

This paper deals with the mixed H ∞ /D-stability control problem with a fixed-order output feedback controller. It is well known that this control problem is described as a combined bilinear matrix inequality (BMI) problem whose feasible solution is difficult to be found. In this paper, we propose a new exterior-point approach for finding a feasible solution of this problem. The advantage of our approach is to be able to use a non-stabilizing controller as an initial point. Numerical examples show the efficiency of our approach.

In this article, we propose briefly the implementation of an integrated platform for the provision of advanced tele-medicine services over satellite, specifically tailored to the continuing medical education and training of health professionals on new surgical techniques. The system will enable the transmission of live high quality surgical video from operating rooms, including both panoramic and endoscopic view, in order to facilitate a) training of surgeons and/or students on advanced surgical techniques through the observation of live procedures using the da Vinci system and b) mentoring/proctoring of novice surgeons during their initial laparoscopic procedures. The system also provides interaction between trainees and local surgical tutors via videoconference. It is aimed at implementing an end-to-end solution, which will offer horizontal integration of the proposed tele-medicine service, with the offer of equipment and broadband satcom / telecom services, in a scalable and adaptable manner that can be easily replicated on a wider scale.

This paper concerns a problem of on-line model parameter estimations for multiple time-delay systems. In order to estimate unknown model parameters from measured state variables, we propose two schemes using the Lyapunov's direct method, called parallel and series-parallel model estimators, respectively. It is shown through a numerical example that the proposed parallel and series-parallel model estimators can be effective in estimating when sufficiently rich inputs are applied.

This paper is concerned with a D-stability controller design problem with a static or a reduced-order output feedback controller. This problem is difficult to be solved theoretically, because it consists of some bilinear matrix inequality's (BMI's). In this paper, an exterior-point approach to this problem, which produces a controller sequence approaching a feasible region from an infeasible one is proposed. The feature of our approach is to be able to use a non-stabilizing controller as an initial point of the sequence. A numerical example shows the efficiency of our approach.

Oil sands operations are playing an increasingly important role in North American oil supplies. Extracting and processing bitumen from oil sands is an energy intensive process that requires both electricity and steam which are usually sourced through fossil fuel conversions. This energy intensity (and associated CO2 emissions) as well as the rapid expansion of extraction operations has led to concerns about the management of this resource. We investigate the competitiveness of two options to supply electricity and steam for oil sands operations in terms of cost and CO2 emissions. This paper presents preliminary results and highlights further areas of investigation.

This paper presents a method using only the rank of the measurements to separate a part's elevated response to parametric tests from its non-elevated response. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified on the 130nm ASIC. Good die responses are correlated for same parametric tests at different conditions such as temperature, voltage and or other stress. Nonparametric correlation methods are used to calculate the intra-die correlation. When intra-die correlation is found to be low the elevated vectors that lower correlation are extracted and input to IDDQ-based diagnostic tools. Monte-Carlo simulations are described to obtain confidence bounds of the correlation for good die test response.

This paper presents further results on the problem of establishing stability of retarded nonlinear interconnected systems comprising integral input-to-state stable subsystems. It is shown that the stability of the interconnected systems with respect to external signals can be verified by constructing Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals explicitly whenever small-gain type conditions are satisfied. The primary result [12] is generalized in two aspects. One is to introduce a new flexibility in constructing Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals to deal with distributed delays more effectively. The other is to cover systems involving time-varying delays in interconnecting channels.
