Due to their monolithic construction and superior wear and loss properties, flexure joints have been used to reduce the mechanism size and increase the positioning accuracy. The compliance of flexure joints, however, can affect the static and dynamic characteristics of the overall mechanism. To design mechanisms containing flexure joints, we have proposed a multi-objective optimization approach to take into account the multitude of performance metrics and design constraints. A Pareto frontier is first computed, and secondary design criteria, such as sensitivity and dynamic characteristics, are then applied to select the final design. To reduce the computation load and facilitate design iteration, a lumped spring approximation, the Paros-Weisbord model, is used to characterize the flexure joints and the pseudo-rigid-body model is used as an approximate description of mechanisms. This paper presents this approach applied to the design of a micro-gripper. The performance metrics are chosen to be the manipulability of the gripper opening and the decoupling of a stiffness matrix (reflecting the remote center of compliance criterion). Different design and initial fabrication results are included.

There are many applications in which particle filters outperform traditional signal processing algorithms. Some of these applications include tracking, joint detection and estimation in wireless communication, and computer vision. However, particle filters are not used in practice for these applications mainly because they cannot satisfy real-time requirements. This paper presents an efficient resampling architecture for parallel particle filtering. The proposed architecture is flexible such that it supports various modes of parallel resampling operations with up to four processing elements. The resampling algorithm is developed in order to compensate for possible error caused by finite precision quantization in the resampling step. Communication between the processing elements after resampling is identified as an implementation bottleneck, and therefore, concurrent buffering is incorporated in order to speed up communication of particles among processing elements. The flexible resampling mechanism is implemented in 0.35 μ m CMOS process and its complexity and performance are analyzed. © 2006 Springer Science + Business Media, LLC.

Performance in multihop wireless networks is known to degrade with the number of hops for both TCP and UDP traffic. For VoIP, the wireless network presents additional challenges as the perceived quality is dependent on loss, delay and jitter. Furthermore, small size of VoIP packets aggravates network utilization of the 802.11 based wireless mesh network. In this work, we evaluate the packet aggregation algorithms to reduce VoIP protocol overhead, compare the aggregation algorithms and propose a distributed packet aggregation mechanism. The experimental results demonstrates that the proposed distributed packet aggregation algorithm improves the VoIP quality and results in significant increase in the number high quality VoIP calls supported over multihop mesh. © 2006 IEEE.

In this paper a new approach to object extraction and recognition based on reinforcement learning is presented. We use this novel idea as a method to optimally segment the image and increase the recognition rate. The success rate is compared with a classical approach. Preliminary results demonstrate increase in recognition rate. ©2006 IEEE.

This paper evaluates the behavioral effect of RObust Header Compression (ROHC) and packet aggregation in multi-hop wireless mesh networks. ROHC itself shows around 20% achieved rate improvement on a line of wireless link even if as the number of mesh router increases, total achieved rate gradually decreases. Packet aggregation cooperating with ROHC provides 4 to 10 times achieved rate improvement and results in maximum 6 times reduction of end-to-end delay. Even if the ROHC and packet aggregation gives such a promising improvement, we need to identify effect of the processing time of the two schemes on overall wireless mesh network behaviors. To do this work, we measure/use ROHC processing time from Pentium 4 and RouterBOARD 230, and apply the results into NS-2 simulations. The simulation results show high performance improvement from ROHC and packet aggregation deteriorates as a general purpose processor in a mesh router takes much time to deal with the two schemes. This result motivates a hardware design be required to speed up the processing units of the two schemes. Consequently, we propose a hardware system model for ROHC and packet aggregation by using SystemC Hardware Description Language (HDL). From the SystemC results, we conclude the proposed built-in processor design for the two schemes keeps performance improvement by enhancing the low speed processing power of general purpose processors. © 2006 IEEE.

This paper presents a formulation of particle filter for tracking an object in 3-D space. The 3-D tracking algorithm is derived based on bearings only tracking algorithm that is applied in tracking of an object in 2-D space with one angle measurement. We investigate and present the fusion process of the algorithms. The performance of the proposed algorithms are evaluated in detail. © 2006 IEEE.

Experimental results are presented to indicate that the widely used power-law models for lifetime estimation are questionable for deep submicron (< 0.25 μm) MOS devices, particularly for the case of large substrate current stressing. This observation is attributed to the presence of current components, such as the gate tunneling current and base current of parasitic bipolar transistor, that do not induce device degradation. A more effective extrapolation method is proposed as an alternative for the reliability characterization of deep-submicron MOS devices. © World Scientific Publishing Company.

Network protocols in layered architectures have historically been obtained on an ad-hoc basis, and much of the recent cross-layer designs are conducted through piecemeal approaches. Network protocols may instead be holistically analyzed and systematically designed as distributed solutions to some global optimization problems in the form of generalized Network Utility Maximization (NUM), providing insight on what they optimize and on the structures of network protocol stacks. In the form of 10 Questions and Answers, this paper presents a short survey of the recent efforts towards a systematic understanding of "layering" as "optimization decomposition". The overall communication network is modeled by a generalized NUM problem, each layer corresponds to a decomposed subproblem, and the interfaces among layers are quantified as functions of the optimization variables coordinating the subproblems. Furthermore, there are many alternative decompositions, each leading to a different layering architecture. Industry adoption of this unifying framework has also started. Here we summarize the current status of horizontal decomposition into distributed computation and vertical decomposition into functional modules such as congestion control, routing, scheduling, random access, power control, and coding. We also discuss under-explored future research directions in this area. More importantly than proposing any particular crosslayer design, this framework is working towards a mathematical foundation of network architectures and the design process of modularization.

The industry is rapidly moving towards the adoption of chip multi-processors (CMPs) of simultaneous multi-threaded (SMT) cores for general purpose systems. The most prominent use of such processors, at least in the near term, is as job servers running multiple independent threads on the different contexts of the various SMT cores. In such an environment, the co-scheduling of phases from different threads plays a significant role in the overall throughput. Less throughput is achieved when phases from different threads that conflict for particular hardware resources are scheduled together, compared with the situation where compatible phases are co-scheduled on the same SMT core. Achieving the latter requires precise per-phase hardware statistics that the scheduler can use to rapidly identify possible incompatibilities among phases of different threads, thereby avoiding the potentially high performance cost of inter-thread contention. In this paper, we devise phase co-scheduling policies for a dual-core CMP of dual-threaded SMT processors. We explore a number of approaches and find that the use of ready and in-flight instruction metrics permits effective co-scheduling of compatible phases among the four contexts. This approach significantly outperforms the worst static grouping of threads, and very closely matches the best static grouping, even outperforming it by as much as 7%
