System-on-Chip solid state circuits that sense, receive, transmit, and process signals are the sensors, or eyes and ears, of the medical field of the millennium. The goal and design of the System-on-Chip (SOC) program for industry will be to provide affordable, reproducible, and reliable front-end instrumentation, components and subsystems for medical systems. To process/store/analyze the signals acquired from these medical sensors, analog/digital systems are used to provide data fusion and information extraction. These biomedical smart sensors cover the hybrid domains of mixed-technology (electrical, mechanical, optical, thermal, biochemical) and mixed-concept (electrical, control, digital signal processing). These significant domain design differences impose robust design challenges for medical sensor technology.

Introduces a statistical speech production model. The model synthesizes natural speech by modeling some key dynamic properties of vocal articulators in a linear/nonlinear state-space framework. The goal-oriented movements of the articulators (tongue tip, tongue dorsum, upper lip, lower lip, and jaw) are described in a linear dynamic state equation. The resulting articulatory trajectories, combined with the effects of the velum and larynx, are nonlinearly mapped into the acoustic feature space (MFCCs). The key challenges in this model are the development of a nonlinear parameter estimation methodology, and the incorporation of appropriate prior assumptions to assert in the articulatory dynamic structure. Such a model can also be directly applied to speech recognition to better account for coarticulation and phonetic reduction phenomena with considerably fewer parameters than HMM based approaches.

As system integration evolves and tighter design constraints must be met, it becomes necessary to account for the non-ideal behavior of all the elements in a system. Certain devices common in high-frequency integrated circuit applications, such as spiral inductors, SAW filters, etc., are often described and studied in the frequency domain. Models take the form of frequency domain data obtained through measurement or through physical simulation. Usually the available data is sampled, incomplete, noisy, and covers only a finite range of the spectrum. In this paper we present a methodology for generating guaranteed passive time-domain models of frequency-described subsystems. The methodology presented is based on convex programming based algorithms for fixed denominator system identification. The algorithm is guaranteed to produce a passive system model that is optimal in the sense of having minimum weighted square error in the frequency band of interest over all models with a prescribed set of system poles. An incremental-fitting reformulation of the problem is also introduced that trades optimality for efficiency while still guaranteeing passivity. Results of the application of the proposed methodologies to the modeling of a variety of subsystems are presented and discussed.

To address the problem of accurate timing characterization, this paper proposes a method that fully exploits mode dependency. It is based on the premise that circuit delays are determined largely by a set of control inputs for which the number of useful combinations, i.e., modes, is small for most practical circuits. We take the mode-dependent characterization approach further and enhance it so that the delays of the I/O paths between the control inputs and outputs are calculated more accurately. We prove that, with a careful choice of propagation conditions, our method can generate timing models with very tight path delays that are guaranteed to give correct results. Experimental results using real-life circuits show that circuit delays can vary significantly among different modes for both control and data input delays, and capturing this variation can have a significant impact on the overall system timing.

Binary Decision Diagrams have been widely used to solve the Boolean satisfiability (SAT) problem. The individual constraints can be represented using BDDs and the conjunction of all constraints provides all satisfying solutions. However, BDD-related SAT techniques suffer from size explosion problems. This paper presents two BDD-based algorithms to solve the SAT problem that attempt to contain the growth of BDD-size while identifying solutions quickly. The first algorithm, called BSAT, is a recursive, backtracking algorithm that uses an exhaustive search to find a SAT solution. The well known unate recursive paradigm is exploited to solve the SAT problem. The second algorithm is exploited to solve the SAT problem. The second algorithm, called INCOMPLETE-SEARCH-USAT (abbreviated IS-USAT), incorporates an incomplete search to find a solution. The search is incomplete inasmuch as it is restricted to only those regions that have a high likelihood of containing the solution, discarding the rest. Using our techniques we were able to find SAT solutions not only for all MCNC&ISCAS benchmarks, but also for a variety of industry standard designs. © 2000 IEEE.

The authors present Chocolate, a reservation based real time Java run-time environment that runs on Windows NT. We first present a brief overview of the emerging real time Java standard and the Resource Kernel (RK) approach to providing timely, guaranteed and enforced access to system resources. Chocolate is a real time Java Virtual Machine that interfaces the real time Java programming language with the abstractions of a resource kernel. It also supports memory regimes to control allocation time and a protocol to bound priority inversion. This version of Chocolate is implemented on top of NT/RK, an OS environment that includes a "portable resource kernel" within the NT kernel. Our detailed evaluation of Chocolate shows that the overhead introduced by NT/RK is acceptable. A real time Java audio package on Chocolate demonstrates significantly better performance than its non real time counterpart. However, our Hartstone benchmark evaluations also show that our NT/RK implementation does have its drawbacks due to the lack of hard real time capabilities within Windows NT.

In this paper we use fluid model techniques to establish two results concerning the throughput of data switches. For an input-queued switch (with no speedup) we show that a maximum weight algorithm for connecting inputs and outputs delivers a throughput of 100%, and for combined input- and output-queued switches that run at a speedup of 2 we show that any maximal matching algorithm delivers a throughput of 100%. The only assumptions on the input traffic are that it satisfies the strong law of large numbers and that it does not oversubscribe any input or any output.

This paper demonstrates that an adaptive computing system (ACS) is good platform for implementing robotic control algorithms. We show that an ACS can be used to provide both good performance and high dependability. An example of an FPGA-implemented dependable control algorithm is presented. The flexibility of ACS is exploited by choosing the best precision for our application. This reduces the amount of required hardware and improves performance. Results obtained from a WILDFORCE emulation platform showed that even using 0.35 /spl mu/m technology, an FPGA-implemented control algorithm has comparable performance with the software-implemented control algorithm in a 0.25 /spl mu/m microprocessor. Different voting schemes are used in conjunction with multi-threading and combinational redundancy to add fault tolerance to the robotic controller. Error-injection experiments demonstrate that robotic control algorithms with fault tolerance techniques are orders of magnitude less vulnerable to faults compared to algorithms without any fault tolerant features.

Dataflow programming has proven to be popular for representing applications in rapid prototyping tools for digital signal processing (DSP), however, existing dataflow design tools are limited in their ability to effectively handle dynamic application behavior. We develop efficient quasi-static scheduling techniques for a broad class of dynamically-reconfigurable dataflow specifications. We use a CD to DAT sample rate conversion system and a speech compression application to illustrate the efficacy of our scheduling techniques in real life DSP systems.

Memory consumption is an important metric during software synthesis from block-diagram specifications of DSP applications. Conventionally, no assumption is made about when, during the execution of a functional block (actor), the associated data values (tokens) are actually consumed and produced. However, we show in this paper that it is possible to concisely and precisely capture key properties pertaining to the relative times at which tokens are produced and consumed by an actor. We show this by introducing the consumed-before-produced (CBP) parameter, which provides a general method for characterizing the token transfer of an actor. Good bounds on the CBP parameter can aid a block-diagram compiler in performing more aggressive optimizations for reducing buffer sizes on the edges between actors. We formally define the CBP parameter; derive some useful properties of this parameter; illustrate how the value of the parameter can be derived by examining in derail the multi-rate FIR filtering operation; and examine CBP parameterizations for several other practical DSP actors.
