In this paper, we perform analysis and simulation for the calculation of the minimum buffer size requirements for Available Bit Rate (ABR) traffic. We utilized a recently developed feedback flow control congestion mechanism. This mechanism belongs to a class of Backpressure (BP) algorithms. It ensures no data loss and operates based on simple "stop" and "start" signals. In our analysis, a feedback scheme on multiple ABR connections is used. Two buffering approaches are analyzed: (1) A Dedicated Approach; in which the flow control mechanism is applied independently for each of the connections. Thus, each connection is provided with its own buffer. (2) A Shared Approach; in which there will be some form of buffer sharing among the ABR connections. We studied the effects of changing the distance between nodes (connection length), number of connections, and the peak rate of each connection on buffer requirements using the two approaches.

Unit and integration testing are two expected levels of testing for conventionally designed programs. This article presents a system for the automatic generation of test plans for incremental unit and integration testing. Starting from a global task of planning integration testing, the system generates a detailed test plan automatically for a given program on the basis of its decomposition as a software structure. The system is implemented as a frame-based system. It supports four standard ways of assembling units during integration, and two ways of testing according to parallelism. It also takes into account the units that require more testing than others. The system greatly improves the productivity of planning integration testing in comparison with the current practice of producing test plans manually. Experiments have shown a minimum productivity increase of 55 times. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Java is a relatively new programming language that is gaining popularity due to its network-centric features and platform independence (Write Once, Run Anywhere). This popularity has caused rapid evolution in the libraries that are available for Java applications. This evolution, in combination with Java's run-time linking, may cause incompatibilities between an application and the library it depends on: an application may execute with a different library version than the one it was compiled for. This paper presents techniques to automatically detect change in a library from its bytecode (binary) representation, and to apply the impact of those changes to any Java application. This paper also includes results of change detection experiments performed on the standard Java library (JDK).

Measurements of the electro-mechanical properties of bone tissues could prove important in the development of models to explain bone remodeling. Two high resolution scanning techniques have been used to obtain acoustic properties and microwave resistivity respectively for specimens of both human cortical and trabecular bone. An Olympus UH3 Scanning Acoustic Microscope (SAM) has been used for the former studies; a newly developed, innovative non-destructive, non-contact Scanning Evanescent Microwave Probe (SEMP) at Case has been used for the latter studies on the same specimens. SAM has been performed at 400 and 600 MHz, with nominal resolutions of 2.5 and 1.7 /spl mu/m respectively. This portion of the studies showed that the lamellar organization of trabecular bone exhibits the same alternation of acoustic impedance in adjacent lamellae as has been observed within the adjacent concentric lamellar structures of secondary osteons (haversian systems). The SEMP generates evanescent microwaves at the tip of a quarter wavelength resonator at 1 GHz and has a resolution of 10 mm. The frequency is now being increased to 10 GHz, yielding a resolution approaching 1 /spl mu/m.

Dimensional analysis is used to determine the nondimensional groups which define the dynamic equivalence conditions for rigid-link manipulators. Scaling laws for general actuators and nonlinear controllers are also presented. As an example, simulation results are presented which illustrate how a large two-link elbow manipulator operating on the Moon can be designed by constructing a dynamically equivalent prototype in Earth gravity, and also, how a sliding mode controller designed for the prototype Earth robot can be scaled for implementation on the Moon-based manipulator.

Due to the ever increasing size and complexity of industrial software products, the issue of the design and architecture level metrics has received considerable attention. We propose some new metrics, in addition to employing some existing metrics, to understand their effects on four important quality attributes of software architectures: interoperability, reusability, reliability and maintainability. We also propose a simple 'concept selection' methodology to assess these quality attributes using the raw metrics. Data from a very large-scale telecommunications software product and its changing software qualities are measured as the software architecture evolves during two releases of the product. Interesting questions arise as to how to determine the overall quality of an evolving product.

The clinical diagnostic data in a chest radiograph is enhanced if chest motion is minimal and X-ray beam exposure occurs at or near peak lung inflation (PLI). Currently, for patients who cannot voluntarily hold a maximal inspiration, beam exposure is manually "synchronized" with PLI and is a hit or miss proposition. We implemented a system for automatically synchronizing beam exposure with PLI during chest radiography. Pressure and bi-directional flow at the airway of patients undergoing positive pressure ventilation are monitored by a personal computer. An algorithm coded in C looks for a zero flow crossing and a peak lung pressure to determine PLI. Custom-built interface electronics allow (a) the system to detect, in real time, which buttons on the X-ray machine handswitch are being pressed by the operator and (b) X-ray beam exposure to be triggered via the software. During bench validation using a mechanical test lung, the system worked consistently, without false triggering. Tests with human patients are currently under way, with IRE approval and informed consent. Preliminary human data indicate that higher quality and more consistent chest radiographs are possible with automatic synchronization of X-ray beam exposure with PLI.

This paper discusses the pulse propagation effects on lossy thin film package planes. The ground bounce phenomena produced by the resonance on planes has been captured using a combination of modeling techniques and measurements. A macromodeling method has been used to explain the transient phenomena by using the dominant poles and residues of the system.

With several commercial tools becoming available, the high-level synthesis of application-specific integrated circuits is finding wide spread acceptance in VLSI industry today. Existing tools for synthesis focus on optimizing cost while meeting performance constraints or vice versa. Yet, verification and testing have emerged as major concerns of IC vendors since the repercussions of chips being recalled are far-reaching. In this paper, we concentrate on the synthesis of testable RTL designs using techniques from Artificial Intelligence. We present an adaptive version of the well known Simulated Annealing algorithm and describe its application to a combinatorial optimization problem arising in the high-level synthesis of digital systems. The conventional annealing algorithm was conceived with a single perturb operator which applies a small modification to the existing solution to derive a new solution. The Metropolis criterion is then used to accept or reject the new solution. In some of the complex optimization problems arising in VLSI design, a set of perturb functions become necessary, leading to the question of how to select a particular function for modifying the current system configuration. The adaptive algorithm described here uses the concept of reward and penalty from the theory of learning automata to "learn" to apply the appropriate perturb function. We have applied both the conventional simulated annealing algorithm and the adaptive simulated annealing algorithm to the problem of testability-oriented datapath synthesis for signal processing applications. Our experimental results indicate that the adaptive algorithm can yield better solutions in shorter time.
