In this paper we present a system that is capable of tracking the pitch and volume of a musical source by making use of training data. We show how we can use pitch-tagged training example sounds to construct a model of a target source, and then use that model to track such a source in unseen mixtures. We do so using a regularized decomposition approach that is designed to strive for semantic continuity in its estimates.

A new mutation technique called the “Exponential Moving Average” algorithm (EMA) is introduced. The performance of EMA algorithms is compared to two other similar Computational Intelligence (CI) algorithms (an ordinary Evolutionary Algorithm (EA) and a “Mean-Variance Optimization” (MVO)) to solve a multi-dimensional problem which has a large search space. This paper describes a new and unique merger of radar technology to automotive powertrain control systems, in particular, with the goal of increasing fuel efficiency in hybrid electric vehicles. The power management system can make more intelligent decisions impacting fuel consumption and emissions if it has knowledge of objects surrounding the vehicle. Furthermore, this paper proposes a scheme for creating a cost effective radar sensor. Discussed in detail is how such a system capable of providing the necessary information for powertrain control applications may be designed specifically to minimize cost and complexity. Finally, an evaluation and prototyping platform consisting of both hardware and software is described, which allows for evaluation and verification of the design tradeoffs. The same platform will also provide the future possibility of the powertrain control algorithm verification on the road as a later step of this research.

This paper presents the design and analysis of a Mixer in 0.13-μm RFCMOS process for Direct-Conversion Receivers (DCRs), with RF input frequency ranging from 50 MHz up to 6.5 GHz. This circuit has been designed to provide an intermediate input impedance, being suitable for either direct antenna connection or integrated with a LNA. This mixer attends the necessary requirements of a cognitive radio (CR), including wideband operation along with good linearity. It is based on a Gilbert-cell using the current bleeding technique with two series resonating inductors. It has a measured conversion gain of 16 dB, a measured input third-order intercept point of -1 dBm, a simulated noise figure of 8.5 dB at 1 MHz, while consuming only 4.5 mW of dc power.

In this paper we consider the ISS (input-to-state stability) and iISS (integral input-to-state stability) feedback control redesign for interconnected systems described by retarded nonlinear equations with discontinuous right-hand side. Internet Bad Neighborhoods have proven to be an innovative approach for fighting spam. They have also helped to understand how spammers are distributed on the Internet. In our previous works, the size of each bad neighborhood was fixed to a /24 subnetwork. In this paper, however, we investigate if it is feasible to aggregate Internet bad neighborhoods not only at /24, but to any network prefix. To do that, we propose two different aggregation strategies: fixed prefix and variable prefix. The motivation for doing that is to reduce the number of entries in the bad neighborhood list, thus reducing memory storage requirements for intrusion detection solutions. We also introduce two error measures that allow to quantify how much error was incurred by the aggregation process. An evaluation of both strategies was conducted by analyzing real world data in our aggregation prototype.

Heart rate variability (HRV), a noninvasive measure of autonomic dysfunction and a risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), has not been systematically studied in hypertensive patients in relation with renal involvement. A retrospective analysis on a cohort of hypertensive patients was performed to show differences in groups of patients categorized according to renal involvement, assessed by glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Patient with 24-h ECG Holter monitoring and other clinical information registered in the database of the Hypertension Clinic of the University of Naples Federico II were selected. Linear standard HRV measures were computed according to international guidelines on 24-h nominal ECG. A total of 200 patients were included in the present study. Decreased ratio of low to high frequency power (LF/HF) was associated with patient with moderate GFR, the highest grade of renal involvement considered in this study. These results were consistent with the findings of previous studies which concluded that depressed HRV was associated with higher risk of progression to end-stage renal disease and suggested that autonomic dysfunction may lead to kidney damage. Further research is needed to define the role of autonomic dysfunction in the development of renal disease and of HRV as a diagnostic or prognostic maker in hypertensive patients.

We introduce a robotic lake lander test bed that can be operated either stand-alone or as part of a Tier-Scalable Reconnaissance mission architecture to study and field test an integrated hardware and software framework for fully autonomous surface and subsurface exploration and navigation of liquid bodies. The lake lander is equipped with both surface and subsurface sensor technologies. Our particular focus is on Saturn's moon Titan with its hydrocarbon lakes with respect to future missions involving lake landers (e.g., Titan Mare Explorer (TiME) mission), potentially in conjunction with balloons/airships and orbiter-support overhead. This test bed serves as an analog to a Titan unpiloted surface vessel equipped with its own onboard real-time navigation and hazard avoidance system, surface and subsurface exploration sensor suite, and autonomous science investigation software system. As such the test bed helps map out a technical path toward true autonomy for the robotic exploration of the Solar System.

This paper considers nonlinear dynamical networks consisting of individually iISS (integral input-to-state stable) subsystems which are not necessarily ISS (input-to-state stable). Stability criteria for internal and external stability of the networks are developed in view of both necessity and sufficiency. For the sufficiency, we show how we can construct a Lyapunov function of the network explicitly under the assumption that a cyclic small-gain condition is satisfied. The cyclic small-gain condition is shown to be equivalent to a matrix-like condition. The two conditions and their equivalence precisely generalize some central ISS results in the literature. Moreover, the necessity of the matrix-like condition is established. The allowable number of non-ISS subsystems for stability of the network is discussed through several necessity conditions.
