Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) are rapidly evolving and the notion of ad hoc networking has become one of the most challenging research areas of wireless communications. The rising popularity of real-time applications among end users in MANETs has stimulated a surge of research in routing and providing quality of service (QoS) support in such networks. Capacity estimation is a key component of any admission control scheme required to support QoS provision in MANETs. A number of schemes have been previously proposed to estimate residual capacity that is derived from window-based measurements of channel estimation. In this paper, a new capacity-constrained QoS-aware routing scheme is proposed. The novel part of this scheme is a simple additional mechanism to estimate residual capacity in IEEE 802.11-based ad hoc networks. The scheme proposes the use of a forgiveness factor to weight these previous measurements and, it is shown through simulation-based evaluation to provide improved utilizations estimation and better available capacity based admission control. © 2011 IEEE.

Double-gate FinFETs have proved to be a promising alternative for deep sub-micron bulk CMOS. In this paper, we have investigated the feasibility of FinFET transistors in asynchronous design which has gained much attention for its advantages such as absence of clock distribution, process variation aware performance, and robustness. Excellent short-channel characteristic, low leakage power, threshold voltage control and the potential of designing area-efficient circuits are the motivation to employ FinFET transistor in asynchronous circuit design. We have designed three novel FinFET-based asynchronous static C-elements which differ in front gate and back gate connections. They are evaluated in terms of leakage and dynamic power, area, and delay characteristics and compared against bulk CMOS C-element in 32nm technology. With technology scaling, vulnerability of combinational logic to soft errors exponentially increases. In this paper we also examine these C-elements nodes sensitivity against soft errors and propose a robust logic. We show that our proposed robustness method increases robustness of the most sensitive node in Shorted gate (SG) and Low power (LP) C-elements 60 times. A dual rail Muller pipeline has been designed with each kind to evaluate our C-elements and compare them to bulk MOSFET pipeline. Compared to SG, simulation results show that Independent gate (IG) and LP modes are most efficient in area and leakage power respectively and in terms of robustness SG and LP modes show better robustness than IG mode." © 2011 IEEE.

Much of the developed world's construction workforce is increasing in average age, and yet construction workers typically retire well before they reach the age of sixty. One reason is that their bodies are worn out because of the nature of the work. We therefore face the challenge of both reducing their physical stress and increasing their productive work life, if we wish to avert an economic and social crunch given the demographic trends towards an aging population in most developed countries. In particular, recent statistics from the U.S Department of labor show that 6.9% of all Workrelated Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSDs) among workers in 2008 affected shoulders;this percentage becomes much larger for electricians, carpenters, and related construction crafts. The cost to our industry and to society is huge, and it is unnecessary. Reduction of certain types of movements and improvements in posture can result in reduced rates of shoulder WMSDs and in extended work lives. This can be done with a combination of robotics, work re-design, and work monitoring. This paper provides the statistical background and economic analysis that supports the scope of the problem, presents background on the kinematics of shoulder movement, and explains the biomechanics and causes of shoulder injuries. Then, preliminary results are presented for a prototype of a simple, low-cost, sensing solution for automatically monitoring undesirable movements and patterns of motion. It is expected that this could be broadly implemented to help reduce Construction Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSDs).

In this paper, a hierarchical model-based approach to frame rate-up conversion is presented. Given a sequence of consecutive video frames, a Spatio-Temporal Conditional Random Field (ST-CRF) is trained to capture both the motion and shape characteristics of objects within consecutive frames. A hierarchical tree is then constructed via hierarchical segmentation that sub-divides frames into regions based on color intensity and regional velocity. A hierarchical sampling approach is then introduced to construct new intermediate frames between adjacent video frames, where estimated intermediate frames are constructed at each level of a hierarchical tree constructed such that the probability of the ST-CRF is maximized. Preliminary results using videos with different motion characteristics show that the proposed approach has potential for producing intermediate frames with high visual quality. © 2011 IEEE.

Current search engines and information retrieval(IR) systems enable users to access the vast amount of information available on the Internet. However, owing to the size and dynamic nature of the information resources, the end user must sift through a large amount of retrieved information in order to find the desired information. To alleviate this difficulty, we present a novel approach for mapping users to the relevant information, by constructing specialized domains in which the users have demonstrated interest. We use reinforcement learning and social tagging in the approach to assist end users to select the concept domains most relevant to their needs. Our approach involves enriching the user's query with related linguistic ontologies and statistical semantic-related concept terms. We employ the Natural Language Process (NLP) techniques to enrich the user's query with semantic, lexical, synonymous terms, and probabilistic topic models, such as Latent Dirichet Allocation (LDA), to extract highly ranked topics from a query's retrieved information.

This paper describes the development of an active vibration control system for a light and flexible stress ribbon footbridge. The 13 m span Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) stress ribbon bridge was built in the laboratory of the Department of Civil and Structural engineering, Berlin Institute of Technology. Its lightness and flexibility result in high vibration sensitivity. To reduce pedestrianinduced vibrations, very light pneumatic muscle actuators are placed at handrail level introducing control forces. First, a reduced discretized analytical model is derived for the stress ribbon bridge. To verify the analytical prediction, experiments without feedback control are conducted. Based on this model, a velocity feedback control strategy is designed to actively control first mode vibrations. To handle the nonlinearities of the muscle actuator a subsidiary nonlinear force controller is implemented based on exact linearisation methods. The stability of the entire closed-loop system with actuator saturation is investigated by the Popov Criterion. Control performance is verified by experiments. It is demonstrated that handrail introduced forces can efficiently control the first mode response. © 2011 IFAC.

A new direction in short-range wireless applications has appeared in the form of high-speed data communication devices for distances of a few meters. Behind these embedded applications, a complex Hardware/Software architecture is built. Dependability is one of the major challenges in these systems. Obviously in such systems, the attribute reliability has to be investigated for various components and at different abstractions levels. This paper presents a hardware platform for wireless system dependability analysis as an alternative for the time consuming global system simulation technique. The platform is built using several instances of one of the commercial FPGA platforms available on the market place. Based on this platform we introduce a new methodology and a flow to investigate the different parts of system dependability at different abstraction levels. The benefits to use the proposed methodology are two fold: first it takes care of the whole system (HW/SW part, mixed RF and wireless part) and second, the hardware platform enables to explore the application's reliability under real environmental conditions in order to study the effect of the environment threats on the system. © 2011 IEEE.

A sixteen-channel linear phased array radar is calibrated by means of Artificial Neural Network (ANN). Limited data are used to train the various layers of the network, for Angle of Arrival (AOA) determinacy. This is designed to increase speed of operation and to prevent over fitting. The designed simulator generates time-series data sets representing continuous span of AOA. The generated datasets are used in multilayer feedforward NNs to find the phase, which is then used as inputs to Spiking Neural Network (SNN) o determine AOA. SNNs are used for hardware implementation feasibility. The designed simulator improved the accuracy of AOA determination, and opens the door for a wide variety of radar classification applications © 2011 IEEE.

The amount of software in modern cars is significant and is growing with releases of new cars. The evolutionary development of software systems means new releases require changes to the existing systems. The changes might have a positive and negative impact on the quality of the final product and software architects working with the changes often conduct impact analyses using metrics. In this paper, we present metrics used to measure the complexity and size of software systems with the purpose of identifying potential risk caused by the changes. The metrics are designed to support early phases of software development and to help reduce costly late changes to the architecture of the systems. Their main goal is to verify nonfunctional aspects of the system and identify parts that should be tested more in order to reduce the risk of deteriorated quality.
