A significant part of current attacks on the Internet comes from compromised hosts that, usually, take part in botnets. Even though bots themselves can be distributed all over the world, there is evidence that most of the malicious hosts are, in fact, concentrated in small fractions of the IP address space, on certain networks. Based on that, the Bad Neighborhood concept was introduced. The general idea of Bad Neighborhoods is to rate a subnetwork by the number of malicious hosts that have been observed in that subnetwork. Even though Bad Neighborhoods were successfully employed in mail filtering, the very concept was not investigated in further details. Therefore, in this work we provide a closer look on it, by proposing four definitions for spam-based Bad Neighborhoods that take into account the way spammers operate. We apply the definitions to real world data sets and show that they provide valuable insight into the behavior of spammers and the networks hosting them. Among our findings, we show that 10% of the Bad Neighborhoods are responsible for the majority of spam.

Robust control problems for nonlinear systems are usually formulated as L 2 -induced norm minimization problems and it is known that those problems are reduced to the solvability of Hamilton-Jacobi equations. However, in the case of bilinear systems the usual L 2 -induced norm minimization problem leads to an obvious solution (the zero input). To avoid the obvious solution Simizu et al. (1997) introduced nonlinear weights on the evaluated signal and proposed a design method using linearization of the state-dependent matrix Riccati inequality derived from the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. In contrast to this, the purpose of the present paper is to propose a new design method using SOS (Sum-of-Squares) optimization technique without linearization.

Robust H ∞ output feedback control problem for a class of switched linear discrete-time systems possessing norm-bounded uncertainty and time-varying delay is investigated. A switched dynamic output feedback controller is sought that can robust exponentially stabilize and reduce to a prescribed level the effect of disturbance input on the controlled output in the closed loop. A delay-dependent linear matrix inequality based sufficient condition for the problem to be solvable is derived via the switched Lyapunov functions. Controller design is performed by solving a set of linear matrix inequalities. An illustrative example along with simulation results is given to demonstrate the validity of these novel derivations.

The robust H ∞ control problem for a class of uncertain switched linear systems by using the variable structure control is investigated. A robust H ∞ single sliding surface is shown to exist as long as a convex combination of the subsystems of the switched system is robustly stabilizable with disturbance attenuation level γ. A switching law is constructed via the single Lyapunov function technique. Variable structure controllers of subsystems are designed so as the resulting closed-loop system guarantees the robust H ∞ performance. An illustrative example and simulation results are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design method.

White space, the unused local TV channels, are ready to be used for unlicensed wireless devices. Due to its propagation characteristics, availability of white space channels can be limited in a densely populated area. This paper presents an inter-cell transmit power adaptation (ITPA) algorithm that enhances the decision procedure of a negotiation-based transmit power control (TPC) in the selection of a shareable channel and the decision of the new transmit power level of neighboring white space applications (WSAs) on the shareable channel. For the evaluation of the algorithm, we conduct theoretical analysis and simulation and prove that the ITPA algorithm can assist the newly-joining WSAs to find shareable channels with neighboring WSAs for the negotiation-based TPC. We expect that the enhancement in channel assignment contributes to an increase in the accommodation of newly-joining WSAs although all channels are occupied.

Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) has received great attention in recent years as a successful global search algorithm, due to its simple implementation and inexpensive computation overhead. However, PSO still suffers from the problem of early convergence to locally optimal solutions. Extremal Optimization (EO) is a local search algorithm that has been able to solve NP hard optimization problems. The combination of PSO with EO benefits from the exploration ability of PSO and the exploitation ability of EO, and reduces the probability of early trapping in the local optima. In other words, due to the EO's strong local search capability, the PSO focuses on its global search by a new mutation operator that prevents loss of variety among the particles. This is done when the particle's parameters exceed the problem conditions. The resulting hybrid algorithm Mutated PSO-EO (MPSO-EO) is then applied to the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) as a NP hard multimodal optimization problem. The performance of the proposed approach is compared with several other metaheuristic methods on 3 well known TSP databases and 10 unimodal and multimodal benchmark functions.

As the operating frequency and integration level of integrated circuits (IC) increase, full-wave analysis algorithms are needed to accurately simulate the arising electromagnetic phenomena. The finite-element time-domain (FETD) method has become an attractive candidate for this simulation due to its advantages in modeling complex geometries and materials, conducting transient analyses, and performing broadband characterizations. Three FETD-based numerical algorithms, including the original FETD method, the dual-field domain decomposition (DFDD) method, and the discontinuous Galerkin time-domain (DGTD) method, are investigated and applied to the simulation of printed circuit board (PCB) structures to demonstrate their accuracies and capabilities.

This paper presents a facial expression recognition approach to recognize the affective states. Feature extraction is a vital step in the recognition of facial expressions. In this work, a novel facial feature extraction method based on Intersecting Cortical Model (ICM) is proposed. The ICM network which is a simplified model of Pulse-Coupled Neural Network (PCNN) model has great potential to perform pixel grouping. In the proposed method the normalized face image is segmented into two regions including mouth, eyes using fuzzy c-means clustering (FCM). Segmented face images are imported into an ICM network with 300 iteration number and pulse image produced by the ICM network is chosen as the face code, then the support vector machine (SVM) is trained for discrimination of different expressions to distinguish the different affective states. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, the face image dataset is constructed and the proposed algorithm is used to classify seven basic expressions including happiness, sadness, fear, anger, surprise and hate The experimental results confirm that ICM network has great potential for facial feature extraction and the proposed method for human affective recognition is promising. Fast feature extraction is the most advantage of this method which can be useful for real world application.
