This paper presents a fully complex-valued functional link network (CFLN). The CFLN is a single-layered neural network, which introduces nonlinearity in the input layer using nonlinear functions of the original input variables. In this study, we consider multivariate polynomials as the nonlinear functions. Unlike multilayer neural networks, the CFLN is free from local minima problem, and it offers very fast learning in parameters because of its linear structure. In the complex domain, polynomial based CFLN has an additional advantage of not requiring activation functions, which is a major concern in the complex-valued neural networks. However, it is important to select a smaller subset of polynomial terms (monomials) for faster and better performance, since the number of all possible monomials may be quite large. In this paper, we use the orthogonal least squares method in a constructive fashion (starting from lower degree to higher) for the selection of a parsimonious subset of monomials. Simulation results demonstrate that computing CFLN in purely complex domain is advantageous than in double-dimensional real domain, in terms of number of connection parameters, faster design, and possibly generalization performance. Moreover, our proposed CFLN compares favorably with several other multilayer networks in the complex domain.

This paper gives a solution to the problem of verifying stability of networks consisting of integral input-to state stable (iISS) subsystems. The iISS small-gain theorem developed recently has been restricted to interconnection of two subsystems. For large-scale systems, stability criteria re lying only on gain-type information have been successful only in dealing with input-to-state stable stable (ISS) subsystems. To address the stability problem involving iISS subsystems interconnected in general structure, this paper shows how to construct Lyapunov functions of the network by means of nonlinear sum of individual Lyapunov functions of subsystems given in a dissipation formulation under an appropriate small gain condition.

Anthropomorphic multibody models typically have a fragile sense of balance and generate ground reaction force profiles that do not look similar to experimentally measured human ground reaction force profiles. In contrast, the point-mass spring-loaded-inverted-pendulum (SLIP) can be made to walk or run in a balanced manner with centerof-mass kinematics and ground reaction force profiles that could be mistaken for the equivalent human data. A stance limb controller is proposed that uses a planar SLIP to compute a reference trajectory for a planar anthropomorphic multibody gait model. The torso of the anthropomorphic model is made to track the computed trajectory of the SLIP using a feedback control system. The aim of this partitioned approach to gait simulation is to endow the anthropomorphic model with the human-like gait of the simpler SLIP model.

In this paper wavelet decomposition is combined with autoregressive models to analyze and predict climate time series such as solar radiation and photovoltaic cell temperature. The method is tested on climate parameters for analysis, and solar radiation and cell temperature for prediction. The work effectiveness is evaluated by the prediction of the electric energy produced by a 100 Wp photovoltaic panel. Finally, the performance of predictor is measured by standardized error.

Tier-scalable robotic reconnaissance missions are called for in extreme space environments, including planetary atmospheres, surfaces (both solid and liquid), and subsurfaces (e.g., oceans), as well as in potentially hazardous or inaccessible operational areas on Earth. Such future missions will require increasing degrees of operational autonomy: (1) Automatic mapping of an operational area from different vantages (i.e., spaceborne, airborne, surface, subsurface); (2) automatic sensor deployment and sensor data gathering; (3) automatic feature extraction and target/region-of-interest/anomaly identification within the mapped operational area; (4) automatic target prioritization for follow-up or close-up (in-situ) examination; and (5) subsequent automatic, targeted deployment and navigation/relocation of agents/sensors (e.g., to follow up on transient events). We report on recent progress in developing an Earth-based (outdoors) robotic test bed for Tier-scalable Reconnaissance at the University of Arizona and Caltech for distributed, science-driven, and significantly less constrained (compared to state-of-the-art) reconnaissance of prime locations on a variety of planetary bodies, with particular focus on Saturn's moon Titan with its methane/hydrocarbon lakes and Mars. The test bed currently comprises several computer-controlled robotic surface vehicles, i.e., rovers and lake landers/boats equipped with a variety of sensors. To achieve a fully operational Tier-scalable Reconnaissance test bed, aerial platforms will be integrated as a next step. The robotic surface vehicles can be interactively or automatically controlled from anywhere in the world in near real-time via the Internet. The test bed enables the implementation, field-testing, and validation of algorithms and strategies for navigation, exploration, sensor deployment, sensor data gathering, feature extraction, anomaly detection, and science goal prioritization for autonomous planetary exploration. The purpose of this paper is illustrate why and how a mobile-phone based application was proposed to explore how women react and their acceptance toward well-being management after interacting with the application. It was organized by considering the Female-focused design Strategy (FDS) and designed to have three features: a description of health topics, a self-help diagnosis through step-by-step questions and quizzes about health topics to test general health knowledge. The paper reports the qualitative user feedback and discusses the recommendations and trends for future design and implementation for women's health. © 2011 ACM.

Network fault management systems rely heavily on observed alarms to identify the root causes of network failures. Due to the increasing complexity of modern computer networks, the information carried by these alarms may in fact be vague, imprecise, and inconsistent. Thus, these alarms often possess different diagnostic capabilities and should not be treated equally. In this paper, we propose a new distributed alarm correlation approach that effectively tackles the aforementioned data deficiencies. According to the proposed approach, the managed network is first divided into a disjoint set of management domains and each domain is assigned an intelligent agent. Within the framework of Dempster-Shafer evidence theory, the intelligent agent perceives each network entity in its domain as a source of information. As such, alarms emitted by these entities are expected to exhibit different information qualities and are assigned different weights accordingly. Based on their weights, the observed alarms are then correlated by their respective agent into a single local fuzzy composite alarm. Since local composite alarms constitute only partial views of the managed network, they are correlated, by a higher management entity, into a global alarm that accurately reflects a comprehensive view of the managed network.

To examine the current status of the network entities, widely available software testing tools (also called probes) are employed by network fault management systems. A single probe can be used to test the working conditions of only a subset of the network nodes. Therefore, to perform the fault identification task, a fault management system often utilizes a collection of such probes such that they should completely cover all the nodes in the managed network. However, large number of these probes may in fact exacerbate some of the problems (such as congestion) currently experienced by the network and introduce extra management traffic into it. In this paper, we propose an adaptive fuzzy constraint satisfaction problem-based approach to significantly reduce management traffic (probes) while maintaining its fault diagnostic power. In this new approach, the most informative probes among the available ones are selected based on some criteria that are well-formulated in the definitions of the problem constraints. The efficiency of the new algorithm has been examined by extensive experiments and its results are reported.

We propose a new distributed alarm correlation and fault identification in computer networks. The managed network is divided into a disjoint management domains and each management domain is assigned a dedicated intelligent agent. The intelligent agent is responsible for collecting, analyzing, and correlating alarms emitted form emitted from its constituent entities in its domain. In the framework of Dempster-Shafer evidence theory, each agent perceives each alarm as a piece of evidence in the occurrence of a certain fault hypothesis and correlates the received alarms into a single alarm called local composite alarm, which encapsulates the agent's partial view of the current status of the managed system. While the alarm correlation process is performed locally, each intelligent agent is able to correlate its alarms globally. These local composite alarms are, in turn, sent to a higher agent whose task is to fuse these alarms and form a global view of operation status of the running network. Extensive experimentations have demonstrated that the proposed approach is more alarm loss tolerant than the codebook based approaches and hence shown its effectiveness in a usually noisy network environment. © 2010 IEEE.

We present a modified Temporal Conditional Random Fields framework for modeling and predicting object motion. To facilitate such a powerful graphical model with prediction and come up with a CRF-based predictor, we propose a set of new temporal relations for object tracking, with feature functions such as optical flow (calculated among consequent frames). We evaluate our proposed Temporal Conditional Random Field method with real and synthetic data sequences and will show that the TCRF prediction is nearly equivalent with result of template matching. Experimental results show that our proposed method estimates future target state with zero error until target dynamic changes. Our proposed modified CRF method with simple and easy to implement feature functions, can learn any target dynamic, thus, it can predict next state of target with zero error. © 2010 IEEE.
