This paper is concerned with the robust regional pole placement control problem against time invariant polytopic uncertainties. In this paper we propose an iterative approach to design a fixed-order output feedback controller achieving the robust regional pole placement. The features of our approach are to be able to use any controller variables as an initial point and to construct a controller sequence approaching a feasible region from the outside. Numerical examples are given to show the efficiency of our approach.

The ability to transmit a message securely in the presence of eavesdroppers in a dense wireless network is considered. As with a number of recent schemes, system nodes other than the transmitter and receiver are chosen to generate noise that confuses the eavesdropper. By exploiting the dynamics of the fading, significantly improved performance is achieved beyond that generated from the standard multi-user diversity gain expected from opportunistic relaying. In particular, the node with the best fading characteristics takes responsibility for message relaying, while those whose fading will significantly reduce their impact on the desired communication play the role of noise generators. For a source transmitting to a destination using a set of intermediate relays, we consider the number of eavesdroppers that can be present without the interception of packets, in both the case where the eavesdroppers operate independently and in the case where they collude. The latter case also encompasses the more likely scenario of a single eavesdropper with a sophisticated receiver.

Register transfer level power macro-modeling is a promising technique for accurate and efficient power estimation. This paper proposes an effective approach based on the table-based method of the RTL power macro-modeling. We propose the accurate table reference method which considers power library unevenness. The proposed method is applicable for various table-based estimation and outputs more proximal power value. The experimental results show the proposed methods reduces max error 46.48% in maximum for 8 benchmark circuits, comparing to conventional method. RMS (Root Mean Square) error is also improved 1.77% in maximum.

Hardware E-Nose system classification is a challenging task. This paper presents our system architecture for chemical classifiers, with our recently developed Sampling Spiking Neural Network (SSNN) approach. The SSNN architecture is implemented on a 0.5 um CMOS technology tiny-chip designed to work in conjunction with a 256K external SRAM memory. It handles the routing of spike signals among 32,000 synapses and 255 neurons. At the same time, it tracks and records learning statistics. The chip can be used in parallel with other SSNN co-processors for very large systems. Experimental measurements using the Cyranose 320 sensor array and the SSNN-1 classifier are presented and results compare favorably to other E-Nose classification systems. The SSNN-1 is unique in its minimal yet powerful design with on-chip learning and parallel monitoring to detect binary odor patterns with high noise environment.

In an attempt to increase the area utilization of multi-chip packages, manufacturers have started looking at 3D packaging. The 3D structures have either dies or chips stacked one above the other. These 3D structures have low thermal capabilities, and hence the thermal issues get aggravated during testing. In this paper, thermal aware test scheduling techniques for stacked structures is proposed. Care is taken to schedule the stacked partitions appropriately to prevent local heating and achieve uniform vertical temperature spread. Concurrent testing of dies is considered for reduced test time and existing test architecture is employed. The widely used global peak power model gives a pessimistic estimate of the power profile. A new partition scheme is proposed for the power profile based on power variations and true power. This scheme of power profile partitioning which is a trade-off between a cycle accurate model and global peak model offers both flexibility during scheduling and also reduces total false power. The power profile partitions are scheduled through algorithms based on heuristics. System model of the 3D stack is obtained from the linear RC-models after considering the various factors that affect the heat flow and die temperatures. Simulation results show that the proposed technique achieves uniform temperature spread across the 3D structure.

Technology development has produced motion and position sensors small in size and capable of wireless communication, yet a suitable system for easy and reliable monitoring and interpretation of movement parameters responsive to the treatment for MS patients remains elusive. We designed a study with the following specific aims: 1) to identify core quantitative kinetic and kinematic gait variables that are responsive to temporary changes induced by the treatment; 2) to determine the association of clinical and gait laboratory measures with quantitative measures of motor function in the patient's home environment and quality of life measures. We present in this paper a preliminary investigation of identifying a few selected parameters that may capture the key parameters most responsive to the treatment. Our goal for this study is to develop a suitable monitoring device to track changes in gait performance on selected parameters to provide clinicians with objective and sensitive measures that can be easily obtained in clinic or at home. These objective assessments will assist the clinicians in making more effective treatment decisions and facilitate new treatment development.

The delivery of IP packets to a set of elements lying within a designated geographical area, also known as geocasting, is an important aspect in vehicular networks. Geocast messages can be used, for instance, to warn drivers about road conditions (e.g., weather hazards) and therefore prevent accidents. In order for geocasting to work on the Internet, IP addresses must be associated with geographical coordinates, either temporary (vehicles in transit on a road) or permanently (roadside units along the road). However, finding IP nodes within specified geographical areas is still an open issue, even though several proposals have been made. The objective of this paper is to introduce a novel proposal to extend DNS capabilities in order to support geocast.

Parallel and distributed solutions are gaining increasing importance in designing embedded systems. Future parallel embedded systems are expected to have several hundred processing cores, improving the performance/power ratio. Multilevel caches in a multicore architecture require huge amount of power and may decrease processing speed due to cache's dynamic behavior. In this work, we investigate the impact of a Miss Table and victim caches at the cache level on performance and power consumption. The Miss Table holds information about the memory blocks those might cause more level-1 cache misses. Victim caches hold level-1 victim blocks. Cache locking algorithm and cache replacement scheme can directly be benefited by using the information stored in Miss Table and victim caches. We simulate a quad-core system with a two-level cache memory subsystem under MPEG4, H.264/AVC, FFT, and MI workloads. Experimental results show that the addition of the Miss Table and victim caches reduces the mean delay per task and the total power consumption by 32% and 41%, respectively.

Renewable energy systems such as solar and wind are notorious for their varying energy production. Joint use of a battery system can mitigate this problem to meet constant demand. In this paper, we compare three methods, namely, (i) Monte Carlo simulation based optimization, (ii) Stochastic programming, and (iii) Optimization using Storage moment equations of Fletcher and Ponnambalam to determine the relation between the battery system capacity versus available energy for use. The first two methods require a large number of samples while the last method uses only the statistical information. Each of these methods can also produce required probabilities of failures as a function of capacity and demand. © 2010 IEEE.

Most area-defense formulations follow from the assumption that threats must first be identified and then neutralized. This is reasonable, but inherent to it is a process of labeling: threat A must be identified and then threat B, and then action must be taken. This manuscript begins from the assumption that such labeling (A & B) is irrelevant. The problem naturally devolves to one of Random Finite Set (RFS) estimation: we show that by eschewing any concern of target label we relax the estimation procedure, and it is perhaps not surprising that by such a removal of constraint (of labeling) performance (in terms of localization) is enhanced. A suitable measure for the estimation of unla-beled objects is the Mean OSPA (MOSPA). We derive a general algorithm which provided the optimal estimator which minimize the MOSPA. We call such an estimator a Minimum MOSPA (MMOSPA) estimator.
