Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) can occur in people with or without previous lung disease. Analysis of aeration in artificial ventilation for ARDS is one of the major applications of computed tomography (CT) lung density examination. A movie of an affected rabbit lung over the respiratory cycle was produced by dynamic CT with a cine loop technique. This technique can produce thousands of CT images for analysis with a single experiment. A fully automated algorithm based on the capability of wavelet transformation to detect edges in the image is proposed. This method accurately and consistently segments the lung in pulmonary CT images. The speed and accuracy of this technique allows it to outperform other methods when dealing with the large number of images created by dynamic computed tomography

In 2002 he obtained his PhD degree from the University of Strath-clyde Glasgow Scotland. His theoretical research interests include predictive PID control advanced classical control generalised predictive control system identification and fault monitoring robust control design computer networks and more recently control through networks. His industrial interests are in the areas of large-scale systems especially power systems and power plant modelling and control supervisory control and process control. Dr. Moradi has published a number of Journal and Conference papers. Dr. Katebi is a senior lecturer in the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering University of Strathclyde. His theoretical research interests are currently focused on Non-linear Control and Filtering for Complex Systems Autonomous Control Design System integration and Fault monitoring and Reconfiguration Plant Monitoring through the Internet Discrete Event Simulation Process Optimisation and Robust Control Design. The industrial research interests are in the area of Hot and Rolling for Steel and Aluminium Power Plant Modelling and Control Marine Control Systems Process Control and Wastewater Treatment Control. This paper is concerned with the design of Multi-Inputs and Multi-Outputs (MIMO) predictive PID controllers, which have similar performance to that obtainable from model-based predictive controllers. A new PID control structure is defined which incorporates the prediction of future outputs and uses future set point. A method is proposed to calculate the optimal values of the PID gains from generalised predictive control results. A decentralized version of the predictive PID controllers is presented and the stability of the closed loop system is studied. Simulation studies demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed controller compared with a conventional PID controller. The results are also compared with generalised predictive control solutions.

The industry is producing new wireless mobile devices, such as smart phones, at an ever increasing pace. In terms of processors and memory, these devices are as powerful as the PCs were one decade ago. Therefore, they are perfectly suitable to become the first real-life platforms for ubiquitous computing. For instance, they can be programmed to run location-aware applications that provide people with real-time information relevant to their current places. Deploying such applications in our daily life, however, requires a good understanding of their power requirements in order to ensure that mobile devices can indeed support them. This paper presents a quantitative analysis of power consumption for location-aware applications in our SmartCampus project, which builds a large scale test-bed for mobile social computing. Based on this analysis, we conclude that carefully designed applications can run for up to six hours, while updating the user location frequently enough to support real-time location-aware communication.

This paper initially shows ROHC and packet aggregation significantly improve the number of successful voice calls. However, the improvement does not include processor's processing overhead, which is identified by measuring ROHC processing time from Intel Pentium 4 and RouterBOARD, and applying the results into NS-2 simulations. Simulation results indicate the number of successful voice calls is seriously affected by the processing overhead. For the solution of the processing limitation, we propose a hardware model of the two algorithms and numerically analyze the model. Simulation results show the hardware model makes the number of successful voice calls approach the ideal (no-delay) case, and the numerical model exactly characterizes the hardware behaviors.

In this paper we discuss a computational framework which allows for accuracy controlled capacitance extraction in the entire package model consisting of 2.9 million elements on the conductor boundaries. The capacity for simulation of large-scale interconnects is attained through parallel implementation of a tree-based hierarchical computational algorithm. The acceleration of dense matrix-vector product resulting from the Locally Corrected Nystrom (LCN) discretization of the governing integral equation is effected by means of the Barnes-Hut (BH) method. The kernel-independence of the latter provides for inclusion of the dielectric substrate into the computational model without increasing the model's size by means of creation of the pertinent Green's function databases for the substrate process.

In this paper, we propose a discrete-time receding horizon Kalman filter with the estimated initial state on the horizon. The proposed filter employs the conventional Kalman filter with the receding horizon strategy. The initial state on the horizon is estimated from a maximum likelihood criterion and then initiates the Kalman filter. It turns out that the proposed filter is independent of any a priori information on the state over the horizon while the previous filters assume that the stochastic information on the initial state at the starting time is available. The proposed filter is shown to have the same form as an optimal FIR filter, which leads to having the optimality and the unbiasedness.

This paper describes the design and implementation of a hybrid intelligent surveillance system that consists of an embedded system and a personal computer (PC)-based system. The embedded system performs some of the image processing tasks and sends the processed data to the PC. The PC tracks persons and recognizes two-person interactions by using a grayscale side view image sequence captured by a stationary camera. Based on our previous research, we explored the optimum division of tasks between the embedded system and the PC, simulated the embedded system using dataflow models in Ptolemy, and prototyped the embedded system in real-time hardware and software using a 16-bit CISC microprocessor. This embedded system processes one 320 × 240 frame in 89 ms, which yields one-third of the rate of 30 Hz video system. In addition, the real-time embedded system prototype uses 5.7 K bytes of program memory, 854 K bytes of internal data memory and 2 M bytes external DRAM. © Springer Science + Business Media, Inc. 2006.

Infrastructure facilities in many countries have been repeatedly subjected to natural or human-induced disasters. International aid institutions, such as the United Nations Development Program （UNDP）, United States Aid International Development （USAID）, Japan International Cooperation Agency （JICA） and the World Bank International Aid Development （IDA）, are endeavoring to assist in the reconstruction of devastated countries. Development institutions normally face the problem of selecting and implementing relevant priority infrastructure projects that are needed in various sectors. Usually there are also several key local players in the decision making process. In many cases, these main decision makers have contradictory objectives that lead to conflict and thereby hamper the reconstruction process. In response to this kind of problem, an effective approach has been developed within the field of Multiple Criteria Decision Analysis （MCDA）, the Analytical Hierarchy Process （AHP）, that can assist decision makers in prioritizing projects to meet specified goals and objectives. Using the AHP approach, the problem of selecting infrastructure projects is dealt with systematically when applying this flexible MCDA technique. This approach takes into account possible uncertainties and social discrepancies, and can use the judgments of the decision makers themselves when there is a lack of technical or historical data. Decision makers from international financial aid institutions, donor agencies, governmental and the local community can utilize this proposed approach.
