The Internet of Vehicles (IoV), a network that interlinks vehicles, infrastructure, and assorted entities, serves as a cornerstone for intelligent transportation systems and the emergence of smart cities. Within this context, edge computing has been identified as a critical solution for providing rapid and reliable data processing. Machine Learning (ML) techniques have become essential to IoV activities such as resource allocation and load balancing across mobile edge servers, typified by decentralized services that range from natural language processing to image recognition. The fusion of ML with edge computing within IoV architecture promises enhanced performance, efficiency, and safety. However, this amalgamation also creates challenges related to data privacy, cybersecurity, malfunctioning edge devices, inconsistent network connectivity, human errors, and malicious insiders. Consequently, this paper focuses on modeling security threats within an ML-based edge computing framework for the IoV. We analyze the system provided by the Linux Foundation Edge Akraino Project's Stable Topology Prediction blueprint by employing a hybrid threat modeling technique. Our strategy leverages STRIDE to elicit threats on distinct system elements like vehicle-to-vehicle communication networks, edge networks, and ML models. Subsequently, these threats are consolidated for a comprehensive view using an attack tree. © 2023 IEEE.

Weakly supervised video object segmentation (WSVOS) enables the identification of segmentation maps without requiring extensive annotations of object masks, relying instead on coarse video labels indicating object presence. WSVOS in surgical videos is, however, more challenging due to the complex interaction of multiple transient objects, such as surgical tools moving in and out of the surgical field. In this scenario, state-of-the-art WSVOS methods struggle to learn accurate segmentation maps. We address this problem by introducing ViDeo Spatio-Temporal disentanglement Networks (VDST-Net), a framework to disentangle complex spatio-temporal object interactions using semi-decoupled knowledge distillation to predict high-quality class activation maps (CAMs). A teacher network is designed to help a temporal-reasoning student network resolve activation conflicts, as the student leverages temporal dependencies when specifics about object location and timing in the video are not provided. We demonstrate the efficacy of our framework on a challenging surgical video dataset where objects are, on average, present in less than 60% of annotated frames, and compare our method to state-of-the-art methods on surgical data and on a public dataset commonly used to benchmark WSVOS. Our method outperforms state-of-the-art techniques and generates accurate segmentation masks under video-level weak supervision. Our code is available at: https://***/PCASOlab/VDST-net. © 2025 IEEE.

Network control theory (NCT) offers a robust analytical framework for understanding the influence of network topology on dynamic behaviors, enabling researchers to decipher how certain patterns of external control measures can steer system dynamics towards desired states. Distinguished from other structure-function methodologies, NCT's predictive capabilities can be coupled with deploying Graph Neural Networks (GNNs), which have demonstrated exceptional utility in various network-based learning tasks. However, the performance of G NN s heavily relies on the expressiveness of node features, and the lack of node features can greatly degrade their performance. Furthermore, many real-world systems may lack node-level information, posing a challenge for GNNs. To tackle this challenge, we introduce a novel approach, NCT-based Enhanced Feature Augmentation (NCT-EFA), that assimilates average controllability, along with other centrality indices, into the feature augmentation pipeline to enhance GNNs performance. Our evaluation of NCT-EFA, on six benchmark GNN models across two experimental setting-solely employing average controllability and in combination with additional centrality metrics-showcases an improved performance reaching as high as 11 %. Our results demonstrate that incorporating NCT into feature enrichment can substantively extend the applicability and heighten the performance of GNNs in scenarios where node-level information is unavailable. © 2024 IEEE.

In realistic distributed optimization scenarios, individual nodes possess only partial information and communicate over bandwidth constrained channels. For this reason, the development of efficient distributed algorithms is essential. In our paper we addresses the challenge of unconstrained distributed optimization. In our scenario each node's local function exhibits strong convexity with Lipschitz continuous gradients. The exchange of information between nodes occurs through 3-bit bandwidth-limited channels (i.e., nodes exchange messages represented by a only 3 -bits). Our proposed algorithm respects the network's bandwidth constraints by leveraging zoom-in and zoom-out operations to adjust quantizer parameters dynamically. We show that during our algorithm's operation nodes are able to converge to the exact optimal solution. Furthermore, we show that our algorithm achieves a linear convergence rate to the optimal solution. We conclude the paper with simulations that highlight our algorithm's unique characteristics. © 2024 IEEE.

Wireless Sensor Actuator Networks (WSANs) are sensitive to cyber threats due to present static encryption techniques. Adaptive security methods are required in WSAN settings to reduce evolving dangers and maintain data integrity. The paper introduces a novel method for encrypting WSAN data using AI and machine learning. Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks process data, Genetic Algorithms (GAs) optimize encryption, and Isolation Forests detect threats in real-time. The proposed system achieved remarkable performance, with scores of 98% data integrity, 96% error repair, and 95% threat detection accuracy. Encryption rates reach their max at 200 Mbps, with optimal resource usage (30% CPU, 25% RAM) and a 5% false positive rate. The proposed AI-driven security architecture improves data integrity, encryption speed, and overall security efficacy in WSANs, surpassing existing methods. The paper overcomes the limitations of static encryption methods and proposes a proactive protection mechanism against developing cyber threats, making a substantial contribution to WSAN security improvement. © 2024 IEEE.

Finding a barrier-free accessible path through the built environment is necessary for wheelchair users. Researchers have identified the effect of surface vibration on the health of wheelchair users and proposed various solutions to identify and annotate mobility barriers. However, the effects of surface-induced vibration on accessibility are yet to be investigated. In order to address this problem, we present the WheelShare system, which uses machine learning to identify surfaces and curbs from vibration captured by accelerometer and gyroscope sensors (both smartphone and wearable device). WheelShare allows users to share their collected data via crowdsourcing. Based on this surface-specific vibration, we recognize 32 different surfaces found across the built environment (in Austria, China, France, Germany, India, and the USA for 32 human subjects) with an accuracy of 97.5%. The recognized surfaces are then grouped into different categories based on their characteristics. Our novel contributions in this article include the following. 1) We have developed a machine-learning-enabled surface recognition system that uses sensor data to capture surface-induced vibration patterns. 2) We have tested the robustness of the system for devices with only accelerometer data (such as low-end smartphones) and achieved an accuracy of 91.6%. 3) We have deployed our prototype WheelShare system for real-time surface classification in new sites that are unseen in training and testing and successfully recognized the surface characteristics. © 2020 IEEE.

Location privacy leaks can lead to unauthorised tracking, identity theft, and targeted attacks, compromising personal security and privacy. This study explores LLM-powered location privacy leaks associated with photo sharing on social media, focusing on user awareness, attitudes, and opinions. We developed and introduced an LLM-powered location privacy intervention app to 19 participants, who used it over a two-week period. The app prompted users to reflect on potential privacy leaks that a widely available LLM could easily detect, such as visual landmarks & cues that could reveal their location, and provided ways to conceal this information. Through in-depth interviews, we found that our intervention effectively increased users' awareness of location privacy and the risks posed by LLMs. It also encouraged users to consider the importance of maintaining control over their privacy data and sparked discussions about the future of location privacy-preserving technologies. Based on these insights, we offer design implications to support the development of future user-centred, location privacy-preserving technologies for social media photos. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Purpose: Colour fundus images are widely used in diagnosis treatment decision of several retinal diseases such as diabetic retinopathy (DR), glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). These very common conditions must be detected early and monitored to prevent progression and avoid permanent damage. Fundus images revealed to be useful also for the diagnosis of cataracts. In recent years, various automatic diagnostic support methods have been proposed in the literature, with the aim of facilitating widespread screening and obtaining quantitative, objective, and reproducible information. Methods: In this review paper, an overview of traditional, machine learning and modern deep learning techniques for ophthalmic disease diagnosis (i.e. glaucoma, DR, AMD, and cataract) using retinal fundus images is presented. In addition, various publicly available image datasets used for such purposes are described. Results: The current main challenges and findings are identified, as well as common aspects and discrepancies between the various methods developed for the various diseases. Conclusion: The overview of what has been done about all pathologies, rather than only on a specific one, could favour a migration of the best solutions and, hopefully, the development of a more precise and clinically useful automatic analysis of all pathologies. Important critical insights and research trends are also discussed.
