Human Activity Recognition (HAR) is a research area that involves wearable devices integrating inertial and/or physiological sensors to classify human actions and status across various application domains, such as healthcare, sports, industry, and entertainment. However, executing HAR algorithms on remote devices or the cloud can lead to issues such as latency, bandwidth requirements, and energy consumption. Transitioning towards Edge HAR can be a more effective and versatile solution, overcoming the challenges of traditional HAR techniques. We present a novel HAR model for computation on edge devices: we design a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) Deep Learning approach and compare its performance with cloud-computing HAR models. The paper is accompanied by a self-collected dataset. The experiments on this dataset demonstrate that the proposed edge computing model achieves promising results (\geq 92 %) in terms of Precision, Recall, and Fl-score. Furthermore, the model exhibits significantly reduced latency, with only 117 ms, and utilizes minimal memory, with a peak of 18.8 Kb RAM and 956 Kb Flash memory. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper mainly discusses two kinds of coupled reaction-diffusion neural networks (CRNN) under topology attacks, that is, the cases with multistate couplings and with multiple spatial-diffusion couplings. On one hand, by adopting state feedback control scheme, the problem of the lag synchronization for the multistate coupled CRNN is addressed. Moreover, the influences of external disturbances for the lag synchronization of the CRNN with multistate couplings are also taken into consideration. On the other hand, several lag and lag H∞ synchronization conditions for CRNN with multiple spatial-diffusion couplings are derived under the help of the Kronecker product and the state feedback control method. Finally, two numerical examples are provided to verify the correctness of the derived criteria. © 2014 IEEE.

Classical optimization and learning-based methods are the two reigning paradigms in deformable image registration. While optimization-based methods boast generalizability across modalities and robust performance, learning-based methods promise peak performance, incorporating weak supervision and amortized optimization. However, the exact conditions for either paradigm to perform well over the other are shrouded and not explicitly outlined in the existing literature. In this paper, we make an explicit correspondence between the mutual information of the distribution of per-pixel intensity and labels, and the performance of classical registration methods. This strong correlation hints to the fact that architectural designs in learning-based methods is unlikely to affect this correlation, and therefore, the performance of learning-based methods. This hypothesis is thoroughly validated with state-of-the-art classical and learning-based methods. However, learning-based methods with weak supervision can perform high-fidelity intensity and label registration, which is not possible with classical methods. Next, we show that this high-fidelity feature learning does not translate to invariance to domain shift, and learning-based methods are sensitive to such changes in the data distribution. We reassess and recalibrate performance expectations from classical and DLIR methods under access to label supervision, training time, and its generalization capabilities under minor domain shifts. © 2024 Neural information processing systems foundation. We propose a novel framework for incorporating unlabeled data into semi-supervised classification problems, where scenarios involving the minimization of either i) adversarially robust or ii) non-robust loss functions have been considered. Notably, we allow the unlabeled samples to deviate slightly (in total variation sense) from the in-domain distribution. The core idea behind our framework is to combine Distributionally Robust Optimization (DRO) with self-supervised training. As a result, we also leverage efficient polynomial-time algorithms for the training stage. From a theoretical standpoint, we apply our framework on the classification problem of a mixture of two Gaussians in Rd, where in addition to the m independent and labeled samples from the true distribution, a set of n (usually with n m) out of domain and unlabeled samples are given as well. Using only the labeled data, it is known that the generalization error can be bounded by ∝ (d/m)1/2. However, using our method on both isotropic and non-isotropic Gaussian mixture models, one can derive a new set of analytically explicit and non-asymptotic bounds which show substantial improvement on the generalization error compared to ERM. Our results underscore two significant insights: 1) out-of-domain samples, even when unlabeled, can be harnessed to narrow the generalization gap, provided that the true data distribution adheres to a form of the "cluster assumption", and 2) the semi-supervised learning paradigm can be regarded as a special case of our framework when there are no distributional shifts. We validate our claims through experiments conducted on a variety of synthetic and real-world datasets. © 2024 12th International Conference on Learning Representations, ICLR 2024. Physical-Layer Security in AmBC-NOMA Networks With Random Eavesdroppers

In this work, we investigate the physical-layer security (PLS) of ambient backscatter communication nonorthogonal multiple access (AmBC-NOMA) networks where noncolluding eavesdroppers (Eves) are randomly distributed. In the proposed system, a base station (BS) transmits a superimposed signal to a typical NOMA user pair, while a backscatter device (BD) simultaneously transmits its unique signal by reflecting and modulating the BS’s signal. Meanwhile, Eves passively attempt to wiretap the ongoing transmissions. Notably, the number and locations of Eves are unknown, posing a substantial security threat to the system. To address this challenge, the BS injects artificial noise (AN) to mislead the Eves, and a protected zone is employed to create an Eve-exclusion area around the BS. Theoretical expressions for outage probability (OP) and intercept probability (IP) are provided to evaluate the system’s reliability– security tradeoff. Asymptotic behavior at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is further explored, including the derivation of diversity orders for the OP. Numerical results validate the analytical findings through extensive simulations, demonstrating that both the AN injection and protected zone can effectively enhance PLS. Furthermore, analysis and insights of different key parameters, including transmit SNR, reflection efficiency at the BD, power allocation coefficient, power fraction allocated to desired signal, Eve-exclusion area radius, Eve distribution density, and backscattered AN cancellation efficiency, on OP and IP are also provided. © 2014 IEEE.

Leveraging the integration of visual and proprioceptive cues, research has uncovered various perception thresholds in VR that can be exploited to support haptic feedback for grasping. While previous studies have explored individual dimensions, such as size, the combined effect of multiple geometric properties on perceptual illusions remains poorly understood. We present a two-alternative forced choice study investigating the perceptual interplay between object size and taper angle. We introduce an illusion space model, providing detailed insights into how physical and virtual object configurations affect human perception. Our insights reveal how, for example, as virtual sizes increase, users perceive that taper angles increase, and as virtual angles decrease, users overestimate sizes. We provide a mathematical model of the illusion space, and an associated tool, which can be used as a guide for the design of future VR haptic devices and for proxy object selections. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).
