Nonlinear differential equations are encountered as models of fluid flow, spiking neurons, and many other systems of interest in the real world. Common features of these systems are that their behaviors are difficult to describe exactly and invariably unmodeled dynamics present challenges in making precise predictions. In this paper, we present a novel data-driven linear estimator based on Koopman operator theory to extract meaningful finite-dimensional representations of complex non-linear systems. The Koopman model is used together with deep reinforcement networks that learn the optimal stepwise actions to predict future states of nonlinear systems. Our estimator is also adaptive to a diffeomorphic transformation of the estimated nonlinear system, which enables it to compute optimal state estimates without re-learning. © 2024 IEEE.

In blockchain networks, transactions can be transmitted through channels. The existing transmission methods depend on their routing information. If a node randomly chooses a channel to transmit a transaction, the transmission may be aborted due to insufficient funds(also called balance) or a low transmission rate. To increase the success rate and reduce transmission delay across all transactions, this work proposes a transaction transmission model for blockchain channels based on non-cooperative game *** balance, channel states, and transmission probability are fully considered. This work then presents an optimized channel transaction transmission algorithm. First, channel balances are analyzed and suitable channels are selected if their balance is sufficient. Second, a Nash equilibrium point is found by using an iterative sub-gradient method and its related channels are then used to transmit transactions. The proposed method is compared with two state-of-the-art approaches: Silent Whispers and Speedy Murmurs. Experimental results show that the proposed method improves transmission success rate, reduces transmission delay,and effectively decreases transmission overhead in comparison with its two competitive peers.

Preceding vehicle identification is crucial for establishing cooperative platooning. This paper presents the development of a prototype preceding vehicle identification system (PVIS) and its field evaluation for the assessment of commercial viability. We designed and assembled a prototype consisting of a processing unit (Jetson Nano board), a communication device (Wi-Fi dongle), a GPS unit, and a distance measurement sensor (Terabee sensor). The Jetson Nano integrates the SparkFun GPS-RTK-SMA unit, the Terabee time-of-flight sensor, and the Wi-Fi dongle. The PVIS prototype in the ego vehicle measures the distance to its preceding vehicle and receives the GPS data from potential preceding vehicles with the PVIS prototypes. With these, the PVIS in the ego vehicle determines the connectivity of the preceding vehicle. The field evaluation results showed that the prototype PVIS works as designed, and each successful identification takes about 5.3 seconds. However, it was found that the Terabee (time of flight) sensor, at times, did not properly measure distances, likely due to an angle issue caused by the roadway surface and vibration of the vehicle. Recent advancements in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), has allowed their deployment for numerous applications like aerial photography, infrastructure inspection, search and rescue, and surveillance. Despite the potential for full autonomy, many applications still necessitate human operators for navigating complex environments and decision-making. Existing solutions often employ high-precision and simple sensors like 2-D or 3-D LiDAR, which may provide more data than necessary and contribute to increased system complexity and cost. To address these challenges and bridge the gap between full autonomy and human-controlled UAVs, this work develops a shared-autonomy framework for UAVs, leveraging lightweight, low-cost 1-D LiDAR sensors combined with mobility behaviors to obtain performance comparable to more advanced 2-D/3-D LiDAR sensors while minimizing energy, computation overhead, and weight. Our framework includes a novel state machine method that exploits the UAV mobility to compensate for the limitations of 1-D LiDAR sensors, ensuring safety and obstacle avoidance through a physics-based algorithm that transitions between teleoperation and autonomous mode as needed based on environmental conditions and safety-critical issues. Experimental validations on real UAVs demonstrates the effectiveness of this shared autonomy scheme in complex environments, and the system is further generalized to larger UAVs and prototyped with a custom sensor configuration and onboard obstacle avoidance. © 2023 IEEE.

We present the development of a bias compensating reinforcement learning(RL)algorithm that optimizes thermal comfort(by minimizing tracking error)and control utilization(by penalizing setpoint deviations)in a multi-zone heating,ventilation,and air-conditioning(HVAC)lab facility subject to unmeasurable disturbances and unknown *** is shown that the presence of unmeasurable disturbance results in an inconsistent learning equation in traditional RL controllers leading to parameter estimation bias(even with integral action support),and in the extreme case,the divergence of the learning *** demonstrate this issue by applying the popular Q-learning algorithm to linear quadratic regulation(LQR)of a multi-zone HVAC environment and showing that,even with integral support,the algorithm exhibits bias issue during the learning phase when the HVAC disturbance is unmeasurable due to unknown heat gains,occupancy variations,light sources,and outside weather *** address this difficulty,we present a bias compensating learning equation that learns a lumped bias term as a result of disturbances(and possibly other sources)in conjunction with the optimal control *** results show that the proposed scheme not only recovers the bias-free optimal control parameters but it does so without explicitly learning the dynamic model or estimating the disturbances,demonstrating the effectiveness of the algorithm in addressing the above challenges.

Stress is a common psychological issue in today's world, causing individuals to experience physiological and behavioral changes. When someone experiences stress for a prolonged period, it can have an impact on their body and thoughts, leading to severe behaviors. Stress-related problems can be prevented if identified early. Nowadays, researchers' use of machine learning in early disease detection is increasing, offering a solution to stress-related issues. This study focuses on developing a machine learning predictive model for classifying stress levels using physiological data. Physiological data is obtained from an open-source dataset containing biosignal data such as Electrodermal (EDA), Skin Temperature, Heart Rate (HR), Blood Volume Pulse (BVP), and others. The dataset is then used to train a machine learning model using Support Vector Machine (SVM), Random Forest (RF), Adaboost, and Bootstrapping algorithms. Accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score are used to evaluate the model's performance. As a result, the predictive model using the Bootstrapping algorithm achieves the best performance with an accuracy of 95.82%, a precision of 99.33%, a recall of 98.02%, and F1-score of 94.69% compared to other machine learning classifiers. Creating such models can aid in early stress detection once they are integrated into a wearable device for continuous monitoring purposes. © 2023 IEEE.

Evaluating people's perceptions of an agent as a public speaking coach

The use of interactive tools, such as voice assistants and social robots, holds promise as coaching aids during public speaking rehearsals. To create a coach that is both effective and likable, it is important to understand how people perceive these agents when they observe them during actual presentation sessions. Specifically, it is important to assess people’s perceptions of the agents’ physical embodiment and nonverbal social behaviour, taking into account both listening and feedback periods. To this end, we conducted an online study with 168 participants who watched videos of agents acting as public speaking coaches. The study had three conditions: two with a humanoid social robot in either (1) active listening mode, using nonverbal backchannelling, (2) passive listening mode, and (3) a voice assistant agent. The results showed that the social robot in both conditions was perceived more positively in terms of its human-like attributes, and likability than the voice assistant agent. The active listener robot was perceived as more satisfying, more engaging, more natural, and warmer than the voice assistant agent, but this difference was not seen between the passive listener robot and the voice assistant agent. Additionally, the active listener robot was found to be more natural than the passive listening robot. However, there were no significant differences in perceived intelligence, competence, discomfort, and helpfulness between the three agents. Finally, participants’ gender and personality traits were found to affect their evaluations of the agents. The study offered insights into general attitudes towards using social robots and voice assistants as public speaking coaches, which can guide the future design and use of these agents as coaches. © 2024 the author(s), published by De Gruyter.

This study aims to increase the number of access users by limiting the sample size to 30 users while ensuring that every Optical Network Unit (ONU) receives data from the Optical Line Terminal (OLT). The proposed solution allows for the determination of power requirements at each ONU based on bus-star topologies, facilitating an increase in user capacity. The power received by each ONU is a critical parameter that system designers must consider when planning the implementation of Fiber to the Home (FTTH), as it impacts the output data in terms of Bit Error Rate (BER) and Signal Quality Factor (QF) for each user. Various parameters were evaluated to ensure that the enhanced network improves scalability while adhering to standard specifications. These parameters included the Q-factor, BER, eye diagram, user count, and received power. The study employed slicing and duplication techniques, utilizing Arrayed Waveguide Grating (AWG) for signal duplication and Wavelength Division Multiplexing for signal slicing. The simulations were conducted using a transmitter operating at a frequency of 1491 nm with a power output of 0 dBm, utilizing the latest version of OptiSystem 20 software. The results highlighted the system's capability to support a total of 73,728 users, meeting stringent performance criteria. Specifically, the system achieved a Q-factor greater than 6, indicating high signal quality, and a bit error rate (BER) lower than 1 × 10-9, ensuring reliable data transmission. For the sampled 30 users, the average Q factor was 8.1527, and the average BER was 5.3648 × 10^-11, with an output power level of -54.278 dBm. Despite an increase in users, the quality of the data supplied to clients remained unchanged. These outcomes underscore the robustness and efficiency of the design in delivering high-capacity, error-resilient optical communication. © 2025 Institute of Physics Publishing. All rights reserved.

In communication restricted environments, a multi-robot system can be deployed to either: i) maintain constant communication but potentially sacrifice operational efficiency due to proximity constraints or ii) allow disconnections to increase environmental coverage efficiency, challenges on how, when, and where to reconnect (rendezvous problem). In this work we tackle the latter problem and notice that most state-of-the-art methods assume that robots will be able to execute a predetermined plan; however system failures and changes in environmental conditions can cause the robots to deviate from the plan with cascading effects across the multi-robot system. This paper proposes a coordinated epistemic prediction and planning framework to achieve consensus without communicating for exploration and coverage, task discovery and completion, and rendezvous applications. Dynamic epistemic logic is the principal component implemented to allow robots to propagate belief states and empathize with other agents. Propagation of belief states and subsequent coverage of the environment is achieved via a frontier-based method within an artificial physics-based framework. The proposed framework is validated with both simulations and experiments with unmanned ground vehicles in various cluttered environments.

This study presents an Epsilon Mu near-zero(EMNZ)nanostructured metamaterial absorber(NMMA)for visible regime *** resonator and dielectric layers are made of tungsten(W)and quartz(fused),where the working band is expanded by changing the resonator layer’s *** to perfect impedance matching with plasmonic resonance characteristics,the proposed NMMA structure is achieved an excellent absorption of 99.99%at 571 THz,99.50%at 488.26 THz,and 99.32%at 598 THz *** absorption mechanism is demonstrated by the theory of impedance,electric field,and power loss density distributions,*** geometric parameters are explored and analyzed to show the structure’s performance,and a near-field pattern is used to explain the absorption mechanism at the resonance frequency *** numerical analysis method describes that the proposed structure exhibited more than 80%absorbability between 550 and 900 *** computer Simulation Technology(CST Microwave Studio 2019)software is used to design the proposed ***,CSTHFSS interference is validated by the simulation data with the help of the finite element method(FEM).The proposed NMMA structure is also exhibits glucose concentration sensing capability as *** the proposed broadband absorber may have a potential application in THz sensing,imaging(MRI,thermal,color),solar energy harvesting,light modulators,and optoelectronic devices.
