One of the fundamental problems of interest for discrete-time linear systems is whether its input sequence may be recovered given its output sequence, a.k.a. the left inversion problem. Many conditions on the state space geometry, dynamics, and spectral structure of a system have been used to characterize the well-posedness of this problem, without assumptions on the inputs. However, certain structural assumptions, such as input sparsity, have been shown to translate to practical gains in the performance of inversion algorithms, surpassing classical guarantees. Establishing necessary and sufficient conditions for left invertibility of systems with sparse inputs is therefore a crucial step toward understanding the performance limits of system inversion under structured input assumptions. In this work, we provide the first necessary and sufficient characterizations of left invertibility for linear systems with sparse inputs, echoing classic characterizations for standard linear systems. The key insight in deriving these results is in establishing the existence of two novel geometric invariants unique to the sparse-input setting, the weakly unobservable and strongly reachable subspace arrangements. By means of a concrete example, we demonstrate the utility of these characterizations. Autonomous shipping has gained much interest in the last decade stemming from several desirable safety and environmental benefits. A significant boost to Canada's autonomous shipping drive would be adequately monitoring ice conditions in shipping environments with unmanned assets and calculating safe navigation routes for autonomous ships. A workflow was created to simulate an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) cooperating with a maritime autonomous surface ship (MASS) to facilitate the MASS's safe navigation through an icy waterway. Both vehicles were modeled as MATLAB Simulink's Sim3D objects operating in an icy shipping environment representing a section of Canada's St Lawrence Seaway and built with Unreal Game Engine version 4.26.2. The UAV performed regular ice-condition-monitoring flights over the shipping environment with its vision and LiDAR sensors. Maps of Ice Numerals (IN) pertaining to the MASS's class were developed from processed data from the UAV's sensors. They served as inputs to a Rapidly Exploring Random Tree (RRT) algorithm that estimated safe obstacle free routes for the MASS through the shipping environment. Colour-coded hazard maps specifying safe and hazardous waterway regimes were also developed from IN maps. Hazard maps could serve as navigational aids to operators monitoring MASS operations in hazardous environments. Results obtained from testing the workflow on the MA TLAB Simulink + Unreal Engine simulation environment produced the desired INs and hazard maps with safe navigation routes for the MASS. These results show the possibility of having autonomous assets corporate to facilitate safe autonomous navigation in ice.

Medical data are highly sensitive and require secure storage systems to protect patients' privacy. Centralized databases pose significant risks in the context of a breach, since all data are concentrated in a single location. Additionally, privacy concerns often prevent medical institutions from sharing data, hindering potential research breakthroughs. To address these challenges, we propose a novel cloud storage system that utilizes homomorphic encryption and secret sharing. Our approach enables secure cloud storage of medical data and allows for secure data sharing without compromising patients' privacy. In addition to enhancing confidentiality, our proposed approach also improves data integrity and availability. We implement a proof-of-concept that demonstrates the feasibility of our storage system.

Dynamic Allocation Hypernetwork with Adaptive Model Recalibration for Federated Continual Learning

Federated continual learning (FCL) offers an emerging pattern to facilitate the applicability of federated learning (FL) in real-world scenarios, where tasks evolve dynamically and asynchronously across clients, especially in medical scenario. Existing server-side FCL methods in nature domain construct a continually learnable server model by client aggregation on all-involved tasks. However, they are challenged by: (1) Catastrophic forgetting for previously learned tasks, leading to error accumulation in server model, making it difficult to sustain comprehensive knowledge across all tasks. (2) Biased optimization due to asynchronous tasks handled across different clients, leading to the collision of optimization targets of different clients at the same time steps. In this work, we take the first step to propose a novel server-side FCL pattern in medical domain, Dynamic Allocation Hypernetwork with adaptive model recalibration (FedDAH). It is to facilitate collaborative learning under the distinct and dynamic task streams across clients. To alleviate the catastrophic forgetting, we propose a dynamic allocation hypernetwork (DAHyper) where a continually updated hypernetwork is designed to manage the mapping between task identities and their associated model parameters, enabling the dynamic allocation of the model across clients. For the biased optimization, we introduce a novel adaptive model recalibration (AMR) to incorporate the candidate changes of historical models into current server updates, and assign weights to identical tasks across different time steps based on the similarity for continual optimization. Extensive experiments on the AMOS dataset demonstrate the superiority of our FedDAH to other FCL methods on sites with different task streams. Although the remission of self-limited epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (SeLECTS) usually occurs by adolescence, deficits in cognition and behavior are not uncommon. Several functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have revealed connectivity disturbances in patients with SeLECTS associated with cognitive impairment. However, the disadvantages of fMRI are expensive, time-consuming, and motion sensitive. In the current study, we used a partial directed coherence (PDC) method to analyze electroencephalogram (EEG) for exploring brain connectivity in patients with SeLECTS. This study enrolled 38 participants (19 patients with SeLECTS and 19 healthy controls) for PDC analysis. Our results demonstrated that the controls had significantly higher PDC inflow connectivity in the F7, T3, FP1, and F8 channels than patients with SeLECTS. By contrast, the patients with SeLECTS demonstrated significantly higher PDC inflow connectivity than did the controls in the T5, Pz, and P4 channels. We also compared the PDC connectivity in different Brodmann areas between the patients with SeLECTS and the controls. The results revealed that the inflow connectivity in the BA9_46_L area was significantly higher in the controls than in the patients with SeLECTS, whereas the inflow connectivity in the MIF_L area 4 was significantly higher in the patients with SeLECTS than in the controls. Our proposed approach of combining EEG with PDC provides a convenient and useful tool for investigating functional connectivity in patients with SeLECTS. This approach is time-saving and inexpensive compared with fMRI, but it achieves similar results to fMRI. © EEG and Clinical Neuroscience Society (ECNS) 2023.

Mobile robots are increasingly used to collect valuable in situ samples during scientific expeditions. However, many phenomena of scientific interest—deep-sea hydrothermal plumes, algal blooms, warm-core eddies, and lava flows—are spatiotemporal distributions that evolve on spatial and temporal scales that complicate sample collection. Here, we consider the problem of charting the space-time dynamics of deep-sea hydrothermal plumes with the state-of-the-art autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) Sentry. In the hydrothermal plume charting problem, the plume state is driven by complicated and unobserved dynamics in the deep sea. To effectively sample the moving plume, an autonomy system must infer plume dynamics from sparse, point observations, while respecting operational constraints of AUV Sentry that restrict the set of possible trajectories to nonadaptive, uniform-coverage patterns. We frame the plume charting problem as a sequential decision-making problem, and formulate a mission planner Phortex: physically-informed operational robotic trajectories for expeditions that strategically designs full mission trajectories for Sentry, where each mission plan is informed by the observations of the last. Phortex is composed of a trajectory optimizer that maximizes expected samples collected within a moving plume, and Phumes: physically-informed uncertainty models for environment spatiotemporality, a modeling framework that leverages an embedded simulator of idealized plume physics as an inductive bias to enable dynamics learning from extreme partial observations and few Sentry deployments. In both simulation and in field trials at a hydrothermal site in the Gulf of California, we demonstrate that Sentry using Phortex learns to track a moving hydrothermal plume and gather samples that significantly improve upon baseline spatial and temporal diversity for use in downstream science tasks.

Efficient power management in smart grids relies on regularly obtaining the electricity usage of each user. However, the aggregation of the electricity usage data may expose user privacy. At present, most existing solutions aggregate the electricity data of the entire user set, which cannot meet the fine-grained requirements of the control center. Therefore, this paper proposes a verifiable privacy-preserving multisubset dynamic billing data aggregation scheme. Firstly, we divide the electricity data into k consecutive subsets and set dynamic pricing rules, such as pricing within a certain range as q 1 and exceeding it as q 2 . Then, the smart meter encrypts the data using the Paillier cryptographic system with the corresponding subset of parameters and uploads them to the aggregation equipment. After the aggregation equipment completes the users’ data aggregation, the ciphertext C is sent to the control center. This process enables the control center to check data integrity and obtain the total number of people, electricity consumption, and costs for different ranges of electricity in a period of time at once, without the need to obtain data for individual users. Analysis and experiments show that this scheme can resist attacks from powerful adversaries on the transmission channel and has practicality and effectiveness.

TransNet: Transparent Object Manipulation Through Category-Level Pose Estimation

Transparent objects present multiple distinct challenges to visual perception systems. First, their lack of distinguishing visual features makes transparent objects harder to detect and localize than opaque objects. Even humans find certain transparent surfaces with little specular reflection or refraction, like glass doors, difficult to perceive. A second challenge is that depth sensors typically used for opaque object perception cannot obtain accurate depth measurements on transparent surfaces due to their unique reflective properties. Stemming from these challenges, we observe that transparent object instances within the same category, such as cups, look more similar to each other than to ordinary opaque objects of that same category. Given this observation, the present paper explores the possibility of category-level transparent object pose estimation rather than instance-level pose estimation. We propose TransNet, a two-stage pipeline that estimates category-level transparent object pose using localized depth completion and surface normal estimation. TransNet is evaluated in terms of pose estimation accuracy on a large-scale transparent object dataset and compared to a state-of-the-art category-level pose estimation approach. Results from this comparison demonstrate that TransNet achieves improved pose estimation accuracy on transparent objects. Moreover, we use TransNet to build an autonomous transparent object manipulation system for robotic pick-and-place and pouring tasks. This paper considers two-player zero-sum finite-horizon Markov games with simultaneous moves. The study focuses on the challenging settings where the value function or the model is parameterized by general function classes. Provably efficient algorithms for both decoupled and coordinated settings are developed. In the decoupled setting where the agent controls a single player and plays against an arbitrary opponent, we propose a new model-free algorithm. The sample complexity is governed by the Minimax Eluder dimension-a new dimension of the function class in Markov games. As a special case, this method improves the state-of-the-art algorithm by a √d factor in the regret when the reward function and transition kernel are parameterized with d-dimensional linear features. In the coordinated setting where both players are controlled by the agent, we propose a model-based algorithm and a model-free algorithm. In the model-based algorithm, we prove that sample complexity can be bounded by a generalization of Witness rank to Markov games.
