In this article a fast and simple method for the motion planning of telerobotic manipulators is presented. It is based on solving numerically a linear system of equations that includes a simple null space vector for obstacle avoidance, and an efficient procedure for the appropriate damping of the pseudoinverse matrix. This approach enables the pursuance simultaneously, of both collision avoidance and singularities prevention on-line in a sensor based environment. These properties also make it suitable for entirely autonomous operations.< >

In this paper a novel algorithm is presented for the efficient two-dimensional (2-D) symmetric noncausal finite impulse response (FIR) filtering and autoregressive (AR) modeling. Symmetric filter masks of general boundaries are allowed. The proposed algorithm offers the greatest maneuverability in the 2-D index space in a computational efficient way. This flexibility can be taken into advantage if the shape of the 2-D mask is not a priori known and has to be dynamically configured.< >

In this paper, a compressor structure based on complex complementary pass-transistor logic (C/sup 2/PL) is presented. Some types of 3-2 compressors in C/sup 2/PL are achieved and a number of experiments are conducted to optimize their performance. Two typical compressor building blocks, the 4-2 compressor and 7-3 compressor, are built and their digital neural network (DNN) applications are discussed. Compared with the complementary pass-transistor logic (CDL) designs, our simulations show that the C/sup 2/PL compressor has the best performances in power, delay and number of transistors.

This paper describes a new algorithm for the placement of analog modules. The algorithm is a hybrid of greedy partitioning and mean field annealing techniques. The sensitivities of performance functions are used to compute the changes in the functions during the placement process. The objective function is designed to incorporate the effect of the performance functions in terms of their slacks beyond the design constraints along with other requirements such as area and aspect ratio. The algorithm has been implemented and results are tested for seven commercial bipolar circuits.< >

In this paper we describe an algorithm for efficient circuit-level simulation of transmission lines which can be specified by tables of frequency-dependent scattering parameters. The approach uses a forced stable section-by-section l2 minimization approach to construct a high order rational function approximation to the frequency domain data, and then applies guaranteed stable balanced realization techniques to reduce the order of the rational function. The rational function is then incorporated in a circuit simulator using fast recursive convolution. An example of a transmission line with skin-effect is examined to both demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach and to show its generality.

A short period with Short Bros. and Harland was followed by an appointment in 1972 to Queen's University Chemistry Department where he was in charge of the Mass Spectrometry and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance facilities. In 1987 he was appointed Senior Research Officer in the Department of Computer Science Q.U.B. and in 1993 to a lectureship in the same Department. Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Vincent F. Fusco was educated at the Queens University of Belfast where he obtained the degree of Ph.D. He worked as a research engineer on short-range radar and radio telemetry systems from 1982 to 1984. He is currently Reader in Microwave Communications in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science The Queens University of Belfast. His current research interests include non-linear microwave circuit simulation and concurrent techniques for electromagnetic field problems. He has published a number of research papers in these areas and is the author of Microwave Circuits Analysis and Computer Aided Design Prentice-Hall 1987. Dr Fusco is a Chartered Electrical Engineer and a Member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers.

The application of multigrid techniques to the computation of the static solutions of electromagnetic field problems governed by Laplace's equation is described. This technique is compared with the conventional successive over-relaxation (SOR) method for solving finite difference problems. In contrast to SOR, the number of iterations of multigrid needed to achieve convergence is largely independent of the grid size. It is shown that the relative performance of multigrid is excellent on large grids where the number of iterations of SOR needed to achieve convergence becomes prohibitively large. The technique is illustrated by applying a parallel implementation of multigrid to find a quasistatic solution of a boxed microstrip problem.

There is a very large demand for basic telephone service in developing nations, and remote parts of industrialized nations, which cannot be met by conventional wireline and cellular systems. This is the world's largest unserved market. We describe a system which uses recent advances in active phased arrays, fast-packet switching technology, adaptive routeing, and light spacecraft technology, in part based on the work of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and on recently-declassified work done on the Strategic Defense Initiative, to make it possible to address this market with a global telephone network based on a large low-Earth-orbit constellation of identical satellites. A telephone utility can use such a network to provide the same modern basic and enhanced telephone services offered by telephone utilities in the urban centres of fully-industrialized nations. Economies of scale permit capital and operating costs per subscriber low enough to provide a service to all subscribers, regardless of location, at prices comparable to the same services in urban areas of industrialized nations, while generating operating profits great enough to attract the capital needed for its construction. The bandwidth needed to support the capacity needed to gain these economies of scale requires that the system use K(alpha)-band frequencies. This choice of frequencies places unusual constraints on the network design, and in particular forces the use of a large number of satellites. Global demand for basic and enhanced telephone service is great enough to support at least three networks of the size described herein. The volume of advanced components, and services such as launch services, required to construct and replace these networks is sufficient to propel certain industries to market leadership positions in the early 21st Century.
