We address the problem of learning an unknown function by putting together several pieces of information (hints) that we know about the function. We introduce a method that generalizes learning from examples to learning from hints. A canonical representation of hints is defined and illustrated for new types of hints. All the hints are represented to the learning process by examples, and examples of the function are treated on equal footing with the rest of the hints. During learning, examples from different hints are selected for processing according to a given schedule. We present two types of schedules; fixed schedules that specify the relative emphasis of each hint, and adaptive schedules that are based on how well each hint has been learned so far. Our learning method is compatible with any descent technique that we may choose to use.

The author introduces a new way to organize memory elements into scan chains for built-in self-testable data path logic. The goal of the procedure is to minimize the hardware overhead and performance impact associated with pseudo-random built-in self-test (PR-BIST) techniques by organizing the memory elements such that some of the logic required for BIST and scan operations is also used during normal operation. The author identifies function types that are well suited for implementation with the register designs required for BIST and shows that these function types are found in data path designs. Functional use is made of the BIST logic by organizing the memory elements in the design into orthogonal scan chains. A data path design example is used to compare an implementation using a normal BIST configuration to one using the orthogonal configuration.< >

A CAD tool for high-level synthesis of high-speed analog-to-digital (A/D) converter architectures is described, which includes a flexible functional simulation capability taking into account the most relevant electrical parameters. By using the flash quantizer and the charge-redistribution multiplying digital-to-analog converter (MDAC) blocks as the only mixed-signal functional primitives, this tool is capable of synthesizing multiple architectures, including the flash, subranging, two-step flash and pipelined AID converters. The tool analyzes and determines the required high level building block specifications, based on functional models which accurately describe the dominant poles of the electrical behavior of the lowest-level building-blocks, namely arrays of switches, arrays of capacitors, resistor strings, operational amplifiers and comparators. A functional simulation based on such models is included.< >

The problem of computing volumetric shape from stereo is examined. It is argued that intermediate two-and-one-half-dimensional dense or wire-frame descriptions may not be always possible from stereo, especially when there are curved surfaces in the scene, and that 3D volumetric descriptions of objects may have to be derived directly from stereo correspondences. Methods are then presented for recovering volumetric shape with linear straight homogeneous generalized cones (LSHGCs) and straight homogeneous generalized cones (SHGCs) as the shape models, using some invariant properties in their monocular and stereo projections. Experimental results on images of objects with curved surfaces are given.< >
