Enabling Real-time Computing and Transmission Services in Large-Scale LEO Satellite Networks

Enhanced by onboard computing resources and inter-satellite links (ISLs), large-scale satellite networks (SNs) can supplement terrestrial networks, facilitating real-time edge computing and transmission in remote areas at low latency. This capability benefits applications such as real-time remote object tracking, vehicular edge computing, and environmental monitoring. However, different from terrestrial vehicular networks, satellite mobility and the intermittent nature of ISLs often render many computing satellites inaccessible, necessitating efficient scheduling scheme for joint computing and communication resource allocation. To meet this requirement, we investigate joint computing and transmission strategy for real-time computing applications over SNs to reduce end-to-end delays. We formulate the real-time computing and transmission problem over time-varying SNs as an integer linear programming problem. The mathematical optimization method has an exponential time complexity of O(2|L⫟| . (4 |V⫟| + 4∣ L⫟|)2|L∣) in the worst case, which grows rapidly with the growth of network sizes. Here, |V⫟| and |L⫟| denote the number of nodes and links, respectively, within the time window {\tau }. Resorting to the designed k-shortest path-based method yields a worst-case complexity of O(|V⫟|! . |V⫟|3). While efficient under common scenarios, its running time is still relatively unstable and may become tens of times longer when computing resources become scarce. To enhance efficiency, we further design a graph-based algorithm that leverages the solution space's unique structure, thereby achieving optimal solutions with polynomial time complexity O(3|L⫟| + (2\log |V⫟|+1) |V⫟|). Extensive evaluations conducted on the world's largest Starlink system validate the efficacy of the designed methods and highlight their potential synergy. © 1967-2012 IEEE.

When studying the use of assistive robots in home environments, and especially how such robots can be personalised to meet the needs of the resident, key concerns are issues related to behaviour verification, behaviour interference and safety. Here, personalisation refers to the teaching of new robot behaviours by both technical and non-technical end users. In this article, we consider the issue of behaviour interference caused by situations where newly taught robot behaviours may affect or be affected by existing behaviours and thus, those behaviours will not or might not ever be executed. We focus in particular on how such situations can be detected and presented to the user. We describe the human-robot behaviour teaching system that we developed as well as the formal behaviour checking methods used. The online use of behaviour checking is demonstrated, based on static analysis of behaviours during the operation of the robot, and evaluated in a user study. We conducted a proof-of-concept human-robot interaction study with an autonomous, multi-purpose robot operating within a smart home environment. Twenty participants individually taught the robot behaviours according to instructions they were given, some of which caused interference with other behaviours. A mechanism for detecting behaviour interference provided feedback to participants and suggestions on how to resolve those conflicts. We assessed the participants' views on detected interference as reported by the behaviour teaching system. Results indicate that interference warnings given to participants during teaching provoked an understanding of the issue. We did not find a significant influence of participants' technical background. These results highlight a promising path towards verification and validation of assistive home companion robots that allow end-user personalisation. © 2021 Kheng Lee Koay et al., published by De Gruyter.

Blockchain technology represents a modern supply chain management revolution which fixes operational challenges while providing enhanced transparency at reduced costs. The research develops HB-SCOF (Hybrid Blockchain-Enabled Supply Chain Optimization Framework) which combines blockchain self-verification databases with automatic smart contracts to maintain continuous supply chain observation and evaluate data credibility. The framework integrates tamper-proof transaction tracking mechanisms with unified supply chain network connectivity for securing data transmission as a trust delivery method through unbreakable shared databases. The retail-industry case study demonstrated a 25% decrease in expenses stemming from agency elimination alongside enhanced flow management and better stock distribution. The system demonstrates its effectiveness through assessments of key performance indicators including transaction speed and data accuracy together with business cost efficiency. This part looks at implementation methods through training stakeholders in addition to transforming organizational policies which produce successful outcomes. Blockchain technology labs verify its capability to enhance supply chain management efficiency while showing realistic deployment methods.

This paper is concerned with the problem of disturbance propagation in interconnected systems with double-integrator open-loop dynamics (e.g. acceleration-controlled automated vehicles). We consider a symmetric bidirectional linear interconnection to control the vehicles, in which each vehicle is interconnected solely to one immediate predecessor and to one immediate follower with the same control gain in these two directions. We prove that in this setting, regardless of the choice of stabilizing controller, it is not possible to keep the displacements between the vehicles bounded, and they grow unbounded depending on the number of vehicles N. In this case, we call the system string unstable. We show that this impossibility of achieving string stability remains under various boundary conditions for the leading vehicle, i.e., whether this is a virtual or physical vehicle.

Multi-Objective Transmission Expansion: An Offshore Wind Power Integration Case Study

Despite ambitious offshore wind targets in the U.S. and globally, offshore grid planning guidance remains notably scarce, contrasting with well-established frameworks for onshore grids. This gap, alongside the increasing penetration of offshore wind and other clean-energy resources in onshore grids, highlights the urgent need for a coordinated planning framework. Our paper describes a multi-objective, multistage generation, storage and transmission expansion planning model to facilitate efficient and resilient large-scale adoption of offshore wind power. Recognizing regulatory emphasis and, in some cases, requirements to consider externalities, this model explicitly accounts for negative externalities: greenhouse gas emissions and local emission-induced air pollution. Utilizing an 8-zone ISO-NE test system and a 9-zone PJM test system, we explore grid expansion sensitivities such as impacts of optimizing Points of Interconnection (POIs) versus fixed POIs, negative externalities, and consideration of extreme operational scenarios resulting from offshore wind integration. Our results indicate that accounting for negative externalities necessitates greater upfront investment in clean generation and storage (balanced by lower expected operational costs). Optimizing POIs could significantly reshape offshore topology or POIs, and lower total cost. Finally, accounting for extreme operational scenarios typically results in greater operational costs and sometimes may alter onshore line investment. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. Vision-based Semantic Communications for Metaverse Services: A Contest Theoretic Approach

The popularity of Metaverse as an entertainment, social, and work platform has led to a great need for seamless avatar integration in the virtual world. In Metaverse, avatars must be updated and rendered to reflect users’ behaviour. Achieving real-time synchronization between the virtual bilocation and the user is complex, placing high demands on the Metaverse Service Provider (MSP)’s rendering resource allocation scheme. To tackle this issue, we propose a semantic communication framework that leverages contest theory to model the interactions between users and MSPs and determine optimal resource allocation for each user. To reduce the consumption of network resources in wireless transmission, we use the semantic communication technique to reduce the amount of data to be transmitted. Under our simulation settings, the encoded semantic data only contains 51 bytes of skeleton coordinates instead of the image size of 8.243 megabytes. Moreover, we implement Deep Q-Network to optimize reward settings for maximum performance and efficient resource allocation. With the optimal reward setting, users are incentivized to select their respective suitable uploading frequency, reducing down-sampling loss due to rendering resource constraints by 66.076% compared with the traditional average distribution method. The framework provides a novel solution to resource allocation for avatar association in VR environments, ensuring a smooth and immersive experience for all users. © 2023, CC BY.

Artificial Intelligence-Generated Content (AIGC) refers to the use of AI to automate the information creation process while fulfilling the personalized requirements of users. However, due to the instability of AIGC models, e.g., the stochastic nature of diffusion models, the quality and accuracy of the generated content can vary significantly. In wireless edge networks, the transmission of incorrectly generated content may unnecessarily consume network resources. Thus, a dynamic AIGC service provider (ASP) selection scheme is required to enable users to connect to the most suited ASP, improving the users’ satisfaction and quality of generated content. In this article, we first review the AIGC techniques and their applications in wireless networks. We then present the AIGC-as-a-service (AaaS) concept and discuss the challenges in deploying AaaS at the edge networks. Yet, it is essential to have performance metrics to evaluate the accuracy of AIGC services. Thus, we introduce several image-based perceived quality evaluation metrics. Then, we propose a general and effective model to illustrate the relationship between computational resources and user-perceived quality evaluation metrics. To achieve efficient AaaS and maximize the quality of generated content in wireless edge networks, we propose a deep reinforcement learning-enabled algorithm for the optimal ASP selection. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can provide a higher quality of generated content to users and achieve fewer crashed tasks by comparing with four benchmarks, i.e., overloading-avoidance, random, round-robin policies, and the upper-bound schemes. © 2023, CC BY.

This paper presents an integrated multiscopic cyber-physical-social system (CPSS) for evaluating physical and cognitive aspects in an independent block-design test (BDT). First, we utilize a hand tracker to extract physical features at the microscopic level, such as hand posture during manipulation. Second, an egocentric vision incorporating an eye tracker describes perceptual representation at the mesoscopic level. This system represents hand-eye coordination by measuring the distance between the hand and the center of visual attention during the test. Thirdly, an upper table vision system uses color feature recognition in each block to evaluate cognition at the macroscopic level. This system detects the blocks and recognizes that the design matches the task given. By evaluating eight designs of WAIS-IV BDT, our system has demonstrated its ability to measure physical and cognitive variables during the BDT successfully. Groundbreaking applications such as ChatGPT have heightened research interest in generative artificial intelligence (GAI). Essentially, GAI excels not only in content generation but also signal processing, offering support for wireless sensing. Hence, we introduce a novel GAI-assisted human flow detection system (G-HFD). Rigorously, G-HFD first uses the channel state information (CSI) to estimate the velocity and acceleration of propagation path length change of the human induced reflection (HIR). Then, given the strong inference ability of the diffusion model, we propose a unified weighted conditional diffusion model (UW-CDM) to denoise the estimation results, enabling detection of the number of targets. Next, we use the CSI obtained by a uniform linear array with wavelength spacing to estimate the HIR’s time of flight and direction of arrival (DoA). In this process, UW-CDM solves the problem of ambiguous DoA spectrum, ensuring accurate DoA estimation. Finally, through clustering, G-HFD determines the number of subflows and the number of targets in each subflow, i.e., the subflow size. The evaluation based on practical downlink communication signals shows G-HFD’s accuracy of subflow size detection can reach 91%. This validates its effectiveness and underscores the significant potential of GAI in the context of wireless sensing. © 2024, CC BY.

With recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics, unmanned vehicle swarms have received great attention from both academia and industry due to their potential to provide services that are difficult and dangerous to perform by humans. However, learning and coordinating movements and actions for a large number of unmanned vehicles in complex and dynamic environments introduce significant challenges to conventional AI methods. Generative AI (GAI), with its capabilities in complex data feature extraction, transformation, and enhancement, offers great potential in solving these challenges of unmanned vehicle swarms. For that, this paper aims to provide a comprehensive survey on applications, challenges, and opportunities of GAI in unmanned vehicle swarms. Specifically, we first present an overview of unmanned vehicles and unmanned vehicle swarms as well as their use cases and existing issues. Then, an in-depth background of various GAI techniques together with their capabilities in enhancing unmanned vehicle swarms are provided. After that, we present a comprehensive review on the applications and challenges of GAI in unmanned vehicle swarms with various insights and discussions. Finally, we highlight open issues of GAI in unmanned vehicle swarms and discuss potential research directions. © 2024, CC BY.
