Artificial Intelligence-Generated Content (AIGC) is an automated method for generating, manipulating, and modifying valuable and diverse data using AI algorithms creatively. This survey paper focuses on the deployment of AIGC applications, e.g., ChatGPT and Dall-E, at mobile edge networks, namely mobile AIGC networks, that provide personalized and customized AIGC services in real time while maintaining user privacy. We begin by introducing the background and fundamentals of generative models and the lifecycle of AIGC services at mobile AIGC networks, which includes data collection, training, fine-tuning, inference, and product management. We then discuss the collaborative cloud-edge-mobile infrastructure and technologies required to support AIGC services and enable users to access AIGC at mobile edge networks. Furthermore, we explore AIGC-driven creative applications and use cases for mobile AIGC networks. Additionally, we discuss the implementation, security, and privacy challenges of deploying mobile AIGC networks. Finally, we highlight some future research directions and open issues for the full realization of mobile AIGC networks. © 2023, CC BY.

Visual navigation with a 2-pixel camera—possibilities and limitations

Borrowing terminology from fluid mechanics, the concepts of Eulerian and Lagrangian optical flow sensing are introduced. Eulerian optical flow sensing assumes that each photoreceptor in the camera or eye can instantaneously detect feature image points and their velocities on the retina. If this assumption is satisfied, even a two pixel imaging system can provide a moving agent with information about its movement along a corridor that is sufficiently precise as to be used as a robustly reliable steering signal. Implementing Eulerian optical flow sensing poses significant challenges, however. Lagrangian optical flow, on the other hand, tracks feature image points as they move on the retina. This form of visual sensing is the basis for many standard computer vision implementations, including Lukas-Kanade and Horn-Schunck. Lagrangian optical flow has its own challenges, not least of which is that it is badly confounded by rotational components of motion. Spear or Shield: Leveraging Generative AI to Tackle Security Threats of Intelligent Network Services

Generative AI (GAI) models have been rapidly advancing, with a wide range of applications including intelligent networks and mobile AI-generated content (AIGC) services. Despite their numerous applications and potential, such models create opportunities for novel security challenges. In this paper, we examine the challenges and opportunities of GAI in the realm of the security of intelligent network AIGC services such as suggesting security policies, acting as both a "spear" for potential attacks and a "shield" as an integral part of various defense mechanisms. First, we present a comprehensive overview of the GAI landscape, highlighting its applications and the techniques underpinning these advancements, especially large language and diffusion models. Then, we investigate the dynamic interplay between GAI’s spear and shield roles, highlighting two primary categories of potential GAI-related attacks and their respective defense strategies within wireless networks. A case study illustrates the impact of GAI defense strategies on energy consumption in an image request scenario under data poisoning attack. Our results show that by employing an AI-optimized diffusion defense mechanism, energy can be reduced by 8.7%, and retransmission count can be decreased from 32 images, without defense, to just 6 images, showcasing the effectiveness of GAI in enhancing network security. © 2023, CC BY.

Attention-aware Resource Allocation and QoE Analysis for Metaverse xURLLC Services

Metaverse encapsulates our expectations of the next-generation Internet, while bringing new key performance indicators (KPIs). Although conventional ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (URLLC) can satisfy objective KPIs, it is difficult to provide a personalized immersive experience that is a distinctive feature of the Metaverse. Since the quality of experience (QoE) can be regarded as a comprehensive KPI, the URLLC is evolved towards the next generation URLLC (xURLLC) with a personalized resource allocation scheme to achieve higher QoE. To deploy Metaverse xURLLC services, we study the interaction between the Metaverse service provider (MSP) and the network infrastructure provider (InP), and provide an optimal contract design framework. Specifically, the utility of the MSP, defined as a function of Metaverse users' QoE, is to be maximized, while ensuring the incentives of the InP. To model the QoE mathematically, we propose a novel metric named Meta-Immersion that incorporates both the objective KPIs and subjective feelings of Metaverse users. Furthermore, we develop an attention-aware rendering capacity allocation scheme to improve QoE in xURLLC. Using a user-object-attention level dataset, we validate that the xURLLC can achieve an average of 20.1% QoE improvement compared to the conventional URLLC with a uniform resource allocation scheme. Oil spills severely damage marine life and coastal environments. To reduce their polluting effect on the ecosystem, it is important to promptly react to potential spills for early detection and monitoring. In this paper, we propose a drone-based solution with a deep-learning U-net model. It processes the radar backscattering dominated by the specular component in calm ocean conditions to detect contaminated sea surfaces with oil spills. Results show that our approach achieves a high detection rate exceeding 90% for thick oil slicks in the range of 1-10 mm.

designing efficient and labor-saving prosthetic hands requires powerful hand gesture recognition algorithms that can achieve high accuracy with limited complexity and latency. In this context, the paper proposes a compact deep learning framework referred to as the CT-HGR, which employs a vision transformer network to conduct hand gesture recognition using high-density sEMG (HD-sEMG) signals. Taking advantage of the attention mechanism, which is incorporated into the transformer architectures, our proposed CT-HGR framework overcomes major constraints associated with most of the existing deep learning models such as model complexity;requiring feature engineering;inability to consider both temporal and spatial information of HD-sEMG signals, and;requiring a large number of training samples. The attention mechanism in the proposed model identifies similarities among different data segments with a greater capacity for parallel computations and addresses the memory limitation problems while dealing with inputs of large sequence lengths. CT-HGR can be trained from scratch without any need for transfer learning and can simultaneously extract both temporal and spatial features of HD-sEMG data. Additionally, the CT-HGR framework can perform instantaneous recognition using sEMG image spatially composed from HD-sEMG signals. A variant of the CT-HGR is also designed to incorporate microscopic neural drive information in the form of Motor Unit Spike Trains (MUSTs) extracted from HD-sEMG signals using Blind Source Separation (BSS). This variant is combined with its baseline version via a hybrid architecture to evaluate potentials of fusing macroscopic and microscopic neural drive information. The utilized HD-sEMG dataset involves 128 electrodes that collect the signals related to 65 isometric hand gestures of 20 subjects. Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) technologies represent an important advancement in the field of AI, particularly for their capabilities in text and image generation. Over-the-air wireless federated learning (OA-WFL) can utilize the wireless waveform superposition property to achieve efficient model aggregation, thereby providing support for GenAI training and deployment. Therefore, this article investigates the support of OA-WFL for GenAI, focusing on potential applications and specific examples. We first discuss the OA-WFL and GenAI models, emphasizing their functionalities and the potential benefits arising from their interaction. We then explore its application in various GenAI scenarios, including large-scale edge device content generation, efficient distributed training of GenAI models, and reduction of bandwidth requirements and device load. Next, a framework is proposed to apply OA-WFL to diffusion models, such as those used in image generation, and validate its effectiveness through simulation results. Finally, we discuss prospective research directions for the application of OA-WFL for GenAI. © 2025 IEEE.

Generative AI (GAI) can enhance the cognitive, reasoning, and planning capabilities of intelligent modules in the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) by synthesizing augmented datasets, completing sensor data, and making sequential decisions. In addition, the mixture of experts (MoE) can enable the distributed and collaborative execution of AI models without performance degradation between connected vehicles. In this survey, we explore the integration of MoE and GAI to enable Artificial General Intelligence in IoV, which can enable the realization of full autonomy for IoV with minimal human supervision and applicability in a wide range of mobility scenarios, including environment monitoring, traffic management, and autonomous driving. In particular, we present the fundamentals of GAI, MoE, and their interplay applications in IoV. Furthermore, we discuss the potential integration of MoE and GAI in IoV, including distributed perception and monitoring, collaborative decision-making and planning, and generative modeling and simulation. Toward Mixture-of-Experts Enabled Trustworthy Semantic Communication for 6G Networks

Semantic Communication (SemCom) plays a pivotal role in 6G networks, offering a viable solution for future efficient communication. Through nonlinear mapping of semantic representations, Deep Learning (DL)-based semantic communications further enhance communication efficiency. However, the vulnerability of DL models to security threats, such as adversarial attacks, poses significant challenges for practical applications of SemCom systems. These vulnerabilities allow attackers to tamper with messages and eavesdrop on private information, especially in wireless communication scenarios. Although existing defenses attempt to address specific threats, they often fail to simultaneously handle multiple heterogeneous attacks. To overcome this limitation, we propose a novel Mixture-of-Experts (MoE)-based SemCom system, comprising a gating network and multiple experts, each specializing in different security challenges. The gating network adaptively selects suitable experts to counter heterogeneous attacks based on user-defined security requirements. Multiple experts collaborate to accomplish semantic communication tasks while meeting the security requirements of users. A case study in vehicular networks demonstrates the efficacy of the MoE-based SemCom system. Simulation results show that the proposed MoE-based SemCom system effectively mitigates concurrent heterogeneous attacks, with minimal impact on downstream task accuracy. © 1986-2012 IEEE.

With the increasing emphasis on data privacy, federated learning (FL) networks show great potential through distributed training without directly sharing the raw data. However, the coverage of FL terrestrial servers is usually limited. Therefore, we propose leveraging the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) as a mobile flying server to further improve the wireless coverage and training efficiency of FL. Nevertheless, frequent exchanges of model parameters in UAV-assisted FL can result in serious security risks. In order to achieve this, we propose a covert FL scheme assisted by the UAV, which can protect the transmission key features of local models from being detected by wardens. Furthermore, we discuss the FL network and covert communications, as well as the exceptional features of UAV-assisted covert FL. Finally, we present two case studies, one of which focuses on minimising the network latency, while the other concentrates on reducing the energy consumption of covert FL. The simulation results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed schemes in addressing future challenges. © 1986-2012 IEEE.
