Adaptive charging can charge electric vehicles (EVs) at scale cost effectively, despite the uncertainty in EV arrivals. We formulate adaptive EV charging as a feasibility problem that meets all EVs’ energy demands before their deadlines while satisfying constraints in charging rate and total charging power. We propose an online algorithm, smoothed least-laxity-first (sLLF), that decides the current charging rates without the knowledge of future arrivals and demands. We characterize the performance of the sLLF algorithm analytically and numerically. Numerical experiments with real-world data show that it has a significantly higher rate of feasible EV charging than several other existing EV charging algorithms. Resource augmentation framework is employed to assess the feasibility condition of the algorithm. The assessment shows that the sLLF algorithm achieves perfect feasibility with only a 0.07 increase in resources. © 2021, CC BY.

Vehicle platooning has been shown to be quite fruitful in the transportation industry to enhance fuel economy, road throughput, and driving comfort. Model Predictive Control (MPC) is widely used in literature for platoon control to achieve certain objectives, such as safely reducing the distance among consecutive vehicles while following the leader vehicle. In this paper, we propose a Distributed Nonlinear MPC (DNMPC), based upon an existing approach, to control a heterogeneous dynamic platoon with unidirectional topologies, handling possible cut-in/cut-out maneuvers. The introduced method addresses a collision-free driving experience while tracking the desired speed profile and maintaining a safe desired gap among the vehicles. The time of convergence in the dynamic platooning is derived based on the time of cut-in and/or cut-out maneuvers. In addition, we analyze the improvement level of driving comfort, fuel economy, and absolute and relative convergence of the method by using distributed metric learning and distributed optimization with Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM). Simulation results on a dynamic platoon with cut-in and cut-out maneuvers and with different unidirectional topologies show the effectiveness of the introduced method. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. This paper discusses elements of a control theory of systems comprised of networks of simple agents that collectively achieve sensing and actuation goals despite having strictly limited capability when acting alone. The goal is to understand sensorimotor feedback control in which streams of data come from large arrays of sensors (e.g. photo-receptors in the eye) and actuation requires coordination of large numbers of actuators (e.g. motor neurons). The context for this work is set by consideration of a stylized problem of robot navigation that uses optical flow as sensed by two idealized and precise photoreceptors. A robust steering law in this setting establishes a foundation for exploiting optical flow based on averaged noisy inputs from large numbers of imprecise sensing elements. Taking inspiration from neurobiology, the challenges of actuator and sensor intermittency are discussed as are learning actuator coordination strategies. It is shown that there are advantages in having large numbers of control inputs and outputs. As one of the evolutionary algorithms, firefly algorithm (FA) has been widely used to solve various complex optimization problems. However, FA has significant drawbacks in slow convergence rate and is easily trapped into local optimum. To tackle these defects, this paper proposes an improved FA combined with extremal optimization (EO), named IFA-EO, where three strategies are incorporated. First, to balance the tradeoff between exploration ability and exploitation ability, we adopt a new attraction model for FA operation, which combines the full attraction model and the single attraction model through the probability choice strategy. In the single attraction model, small probability accepts the worse solution to improve the diversity of the offspring. Second, the adaptive step size is proposed based on the number of iterations to dynamically adjust the attention to the exploration model or exploitation model. Third, we combine an EO algorithm with powerful ability in local-search into FA. Experiments are tested on two group popular benchmarks including complex unimodal and multimodal functions. Our experimental results demonstrate that the proposed IFA-EO algorithm can deal with various complex optimization problems and has similar or better performance than the other eight FA variants, three EO-based algorithms, and one advanced differential evolution variant in terms of accuracy and statistical results. © 2021, CC BY.

In this paper, we describe the design journey of a smart clothing system, SoPhy from the research laboratory to finally being evaluated in the hospital setting. SoPhy is a smart socks-based system, designed to make physiotherapy video consultations effective for assessing lower limb issues. SoPhy is the result of a 3-year journey of development, study and refinement of a research prototype done in collaboration with a physiotherapist. Drawing on this journey, we present seven lessons that emphasize on the importance of fostering strong collaborations with clinicians to move beyond laboratory studies and reach the target health setting. We provide contextual narratives on how we designed a comfortable smart clothing for patients; how we created an intuitive mapping of sensor data for clinicians; how we integrated hospital practice in the system design, and how we managed the ethics clearance for the field evaluation. We hope that these lessons are useful for HCI and health researchers who aim to innovate the field of health but feel restricted with the little knowledge of design and electronics.

The metaverse is regarded as a new wave of technological transformation that provides a virtual space for people to interact through digital avatars. To achieve immersive user experiences in the metaverse, real-time rendering is the key technology. However, computing intensive tasks of real-time rendering from metaverse service providers cannot be processed efficiently on a single resource-limited mobile device. Alternatively, such mobile devices can offload the metaverse rendering tasks to other mobile devices by adopting the collaborative computing paradigm based on Coded Distributed Computing (CDC). Therefore, this paper introduces a hierarchical game-theoretic CDC framework for the metaverse services, especially for vehicular metaverse. In the framework, idle resources from vehicles, acting as CDC workers, are aggregated to handle intensive computation tasks in the vehicular metaverse. Specifically, in the upper layer, a miner coalition formation game is formulated based on a reputation metric to select reliable workers. To guarantee the reliable management of reputation values, the reputation values calculated based on the subjective logical model are maintained in a blockchain database. In the lower layer, a Stackelberg game based incentive mechanism is considered to attract reliable workers selected in the upper layer to participate in rendering tasks. The simulation results illustrate that the proposed framework is resistant to malicious workers. Compared with the best-effort worker selection scheme, the proposed scheme can improve the utility of metaverse service provider and average profit of CDC workers. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. Unlike passive eavesdropping, proactive eavesdropping is recently proposed to use jamming to moderate a suspicious link's communication rate for facilitating simultaneous eavesdropping. This paper advances the proactive eavesdropping research by considering a practical half-duplex mode for the legitimate monitor (e.g., a government agency) and dealing with the challenging case that the suspicious link opportunistically communicates over parallel fading channels. To increase eavesdropping success probability, we propose cognitive jamming for the monitor to change the suspicious link's long-term belief on the parallel channels' distributions, and thereby induce it to transmit more likely over a smaller subset of unjammed channels with a lower transmission rate. As the half-duplex monitor cannot eavesdrop the channel that it is simultaneously jamming to, our jamming design should also control the probability of such "own goal" that occurs when the suspicious link chooses one of the jammed (uneavesdroppable) channels to transmit. We formulate the optimal jamming design problem as a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) and show that it is nonconvex. Nevertheless, we prove that the monitor should optimally use the maximum jamming power if it decides to jam, for maximally reducing suspicious link's communication rate and driving the suspicious link out of the jammed channels. Then we manage to simplify the MINLP to integer programming and reveal a fundamental trade-off in deciding the number of jammed channels: jamming more channels helps reduce the suspicious link's communication rate for overhearing more clearly, but increases own goal probability and thus decreases eavesdropping success probability. Finally, we extend our study to the two-way suspicious communication scenario, and show there is another interesting trade-off in deciding the common jammed channels for balancing bidirectional eavesdropping performances.
