Recently, cloud radio access network (C-RAN) with caching as a service (CaaS) was proposed to merge the functionalities of communication, computing, and caching (CCC) together. In this paper, we dissect the interactions of CCC in C-RAN with CaaS from two dimensions: physical resource dimension and time dimension. In the physical resource dimension, we identify how to segment the baseband unit (BBU) pool resources (i.e., computation and storage) into different types of virtual machines (VMs). In the time dimension, we address how the long-term resource segmentation in the BBU pool impacts on the short-term transmit beamforming at the remote radio heads. We formulate the problem as a stochastic mixed-integer nonlinear programming (SMINLP) to minimize the system cost, including the server cost, VM cost and wireless transmission cost. After a series of approximation, including sample average approximation, successive convex approximation, and semidefinite relaxation, the SMINLP is approximated as a global consensus problem. The alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is utilized to obtain the solution in a parallel fashion. Simulation results verify the convergence of our proposed algorithm, and also confirm that the proposed scheme is more cost-saving than that without considering the integration of CCC. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

We propose a two-layer coding method for HDR images with noise bias compensation (NBC). Although the mean of image noise is assumed to be zero originally, it becomes nonzero (that is, noise bias is present) after tone mapping, because of the nonlinearity of tone mapping. In the conventional two-layer coding, the reconstructed LDR image is decoded using a lossy encoder of a base layer that includes noise;the noise is included in an HDR image that is inverse tone mapped from a reconstructed LDR image with noise bias. We aim to improve the quality of reconstructed HDR images by compensating for noise bias. NBC classifies pixels in a noisy image into several subsets according to the pixel value after tone mapping, and compensates for the pixel value in each subset with a compensation value determined in advance. The compensation values are determined by using all pixel values in the LDR image that is input to the base layer, in addition to those in the HDR image that is inversely tone mapped from the reconstructed LDR image. We perform NBC following inverse tone mapping for the reconstructed LDR image. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2019 The Institute of electrical Engineers of Japan.

Graphical games are special classes of the standard differential games. The underlying neural network solutions are complicated and do not employ straightforward tuning laws. This issue becomes more challenging if the control strategies of the agents are constrained. An integral adaptive learning approach is developed to find an online solution for the differential graphical games with constrained control strategies. This solution employs a distributed adaptive policy iteration process in real-time. Local performance indices are utilized to assess the coupling between the agents and account for the constrained policies. Means of adaptive critics are used to develop a solution platform for each agent using single layer of neural networks., that are adapted using gradient descent tuning approach. This framework handles the main concerns related to the complexity and scalability of the distributed solution. The convergence of the adaptive learning solution is shown to hold under some graph-based conditions.

As the main contribution, this document provides a consistent discretization of a class of fixed-time stable systems, namely predefined-time stable systems. In the unperturbed case, the proposed approach allows obtaining not only a consistent but exact discretization of the considered class of predefined-time stable systems, whereas in the perturbed case, the consistent discretization preserves the predefined-time stability property. All the results are validated through simulations and compared with the conventional explicit Euler scheme, highlighting the advantages of this proposal.

ABSTRACTABSTRACTThe term metaverse is described as the next iteration of the Internet. Metaverse is a virtual platform that uses extended reality technologies, i.e. augmented reality, virtual reality, mixed reality, 3D graphics, and other emerging technologies to allow real-time interactions and experiences in ways that are not possible in the physical world. Companies have begun to notice the impact of the metaverse and how it may help maximize profits. The purpose of this paper is to offer perspectives on several important areas, i.e. marketing, tourism, manufacturing, operations management, education, the retailing industry, banking services, healthcare, and human resource management that are likely to be impacted by the adoption and use of a metaverse. Each includes an overview, opportunities, challenges, and a potential research agenda.

A large number of real-world problems have high dimensional data. The data obtained from these problems is highly structured and usually in the form of graphs. Graphs represent spatial information about the system in the form of vertices and edges. Often graphs evolve with time and the underlying system exhibits dynamic behavior. Hence, these graphs contain both spatial and temporal information about the system. Understanding, visualizing, and learning large graphs is of key importance for understanding the underlying system and is a challenging task due to the data deluge problem. Our work here utilizes both spatial and temporal information from structured graphs. We learn spatial and temporal information using a specific type of neural network model. Our model is robust to the kind of graphs and their dynamics of evolution. Our approach is scalable to not only the size of the graph (number of vertices and edges) but also the number of attributes (features) of the data. We show that our approach is simple, generic, parallelizable, and performs at-par with the state-of-the-art techniques. We also compare the results of our model against other existing techniques. © 2018

Large electricity customers (e.g., large data centers) can exhibit huge and variable electricity demands, which poses significant challenges for the electricity suppliers to plan for sufficient capac- ity. Thus, it is desirable to design incentive and coordination mechanisms between the customers and the supplier to lower the capacity cost. This paper proposes a novel scheme based on exible contracts. Unlike existing demand-side management schemes in the literature, a exible contract leads to information revelation. That is, a customer committing to a exible contract reveals valuable information about its future demand to the supplier. Such information revelation allows the customers and the supplier to share the risk of future demand uncertainty. On the other hand, the customer will still retain its autonomy in operation. We address two key challenges for the design of optimal exible contracts: i) the contract design is a non-convex optimization problem and is intractable for a large number of customer types, and ii) the design should be robust to unexpected or adverse responses of the customers, i.e., a customer facing more than one contract yielding the same benefit may choose the contract less favorable to the supplier. We address these challenges by proposing sub-optimal contracts of low computational complexity that can achieve a provable fraction of the performance gain under the global optimum. No switching policy is optimal for a positive linear system with a bottleneck entrance

We consider a nonlinear SISO system that is a cascade of a scalar "bottleneck entrance" and an arbitrary Hurwitz positive linear system. This system entrains i.e. in response to a T-periodic inflow every solution converges to a unique T-periodic solution of the system. We study the problem of maximizing the averaged throughput via controlled switching. The objective is to choose a periodic inflow rate with a given mean value that maximizes the averaged outflow rate of the system. We compare two strategies: 1) switching between a high and low value, and 2) using a constant inflow equal to the prescribed mean value. We show that no switching policy can outperform a constant inflow rate, though it can approach it asymptotically. We describe several potential applications of this problem in traffic systems, ribosome flow models, and scheduling at security checks. Copyright © 2019, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The combination between non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) is capable of realizing ultra-reliability, high throughput and massive concurrent connections particularly for emerging communication systems. This paper focuses on characterizing the asymptotic scaling law of the outage probability of the HARQ with chase combining (HARQ-CC)-aided downlink NOMA scheme with respect to the transmit power, i.e., diversity order. The diversity order of the two- user HARQ-CC-aided NOMA system is derived in closed-form, where an integration domain partition trick is developed to obtain the upper and lower bounds of the outage probability. The analytical results show that the diversity order is a decreasing step function of transmission rate given the ratio between the transmit powers allocated to the two users. Moreover, full time diversity can only be achieved under a sufficiently low transmission rate. Additionally, the users' diversity orders follow a descending order according to their respective average channel gains. Monte Carlo simulations finally confirm the analysis.
