The article deals with the actual problem of identification of probabilistic processes as a result of the operation of drilling rigs in the oil industry. The world experience of finding ways to solve optimal forecasting tools using machine learning is summarized. Mnemonic rule for the implementation of classification and ranking systems in the detection of feedbacks as probable indicators of complications of ongoing technological processes is implemented through the description of the formal model of the drilling process in form of a hidden Markov model. The results of evaluation of the developed mathematical apparatus in the form of predictive analytics and a cut of basic complications in the drilling process are presented. An infological diagram of the developed architectural solution of the analysis project is proposed. The results of the control algorithms formalization are given in conclusion. These results allow to ensure the effective procees modes of equipment operation and make it possible to save electricity and water.

Adaptive deployment for UAV-aided communication networks

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) as an aerial base station is a promising technology to rapidly provide wireless connectivity to ground users. Given UAV’s agility and mobility, a key question is how to adapt UAV deployment to best cater to the instantaneous wireless traffic in a territory. In this paper, we propose an adaptive deployment scheme for a UAV-aided communication network, where the UAV adapts its displacement direction and distance to serve randomly moving users’ instantaneous traffic in the target cell. In our adaptive scheme, the UAV does not need to learn users’ exact locations in real time, but chooses its displacement direction based on a simple majority rule by flying to the spatial sector with the greatest number of users in the cell. To balance the service qualities of the users in different sectors, we further optimize the UAV’s displacement distance in the chosen sector to maximize the average throughput and the successful transmission probability, respectively. We prove that the optimal displacement distance for average throughput maximization decreases with the user density: the UAV moves to the center of the chosen sector when the user density is small and the UAV displacement becomes mild when the user density is large. In contrast, the optimal displacement distance for success probability maximization does not necessarily decrease with the user density and further depends on the target signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) threshold. Extensive simulations show that the proposed adaptive deployment scheme outperforms the traditional non-adaptive scheme, especially when the user density is not large. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. It is well known that the reserves/redundancies built into the transmission grid in order to address a variety of contingencies over a long planning horizon may, in the short run, cause economic dispatch inefficiency. Accordingly, power grid optimization by means of short term line switching has been proposed and is typically formulated as a mixed integer programming problem by treating the state of the transmission lines as a binary decision variable, i.e. in-service or out-of-service, in the optimal power flow problem. To handle the combinatorial explosion, a number of heuristic approaches to grid topology reconfiguration have been proposed in the literature. This paper extends our recent results on the iterative heuristics and proposes a fast grid decomposition algorithm based on vertex cut sets with the purpose of further reducing the computational cost. The paper concludes with a discussion of the possible relationship between vertex cut sets in transmission networks and power trading. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Electric load forecasting is a vital role in obtaining effective management of modern power systems. The accuracy forecasting results will lead to the improvement of the energy efficiency and reduction of production cost. This paper presents a novel electric load forecasting model by using BP neural network and improved bat algorithm with extremal optimization called IBA-EO-BP model. First, to enhance the global search ability and diversity of original bat algorithm (BA), we propose IBA-EO by improving original BA and combining with extremal optimization. Then, considering traditional BP is more likely converge to local optimal values, the IBA-EO is employed to find out the optimal connection weight parameters in BP. Two datasets from energy market operation in Australia are selected as case study. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed IBA-EO-BP model is much more accurate than the traditional BP forecasting model and persistence model in terms of three widely used performance indices and two statistical tests.

Firefly algorithm (FA) has widely used to solve various complex optimization problems. However, FA has significant drawbacks in slow convergence rate and easily trapped into local optimum. To tackle these defects, this paper proposes an improved FA combined with extremal optimization (EO), named IFA-EO, where three strategies are incorporated. First, to balance tradeoff between exploration and exploitation, we adopt a new attraction model for FA operation, which combines the full attraction model and the single attraction model through the probability choice strategy. In single attraction model, inspired by the simulated annealing idea, small probability accepts the worse solution to improve the diversity of the offspring. Second, the adaptive step size is proposed according to the number of iterations. Third, we combine EO algorithm with powerful ability in local-search. IFA-EO is employed to handle three different parameters identification problems of photovoltaic model. For comparisons, we choose three swarm intelligence algorithms to compare with IFA-EO. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of IFA-EO to other three competitors.

ABSTRACTObjectiveThis study investigates whether and how perceived training value varies among fighter pilots participating in a large force exercise (LFE), and whether they expect Live Virtual Constructive (LVC) training to enhance training value of future *** technology is maturing but its expected training value is under-investigated, especially regarding future LVC in *** pilots at a Live-flying LFE answered questionnaires, 120 responses were analyzed statistically. The questions focused on whether the sortie they just flew provided training value, generally and for specific Desired Learning Objectives (DLOs), on whether the inclusion of Virtual and Constructive entities in future LFEs would contribute to training value generally and to the DLOs specifically, and on specific LVC implementation *** of experienced training value varied across DLOs, and DLO ratings varied across Mission types. Fighter pilots were positive toward including Virtual and Constructive entities in LFEs for certain DLOs, mostly for flying a complex mission. DLOs covaried around the factors of LVC-tradeoff advantages and Live advantages, as well as temporal dimensions of planning before a mission and stages of engagement. LVC implementation lessons were *** pilots are generally moderately positive about LVC in LFEs. The measurement of perceived training value per DLO seems a relevant instrument for investigating perceived training value of an LFE and expected training value of future LVC training.

The ability to measure the level of activity among older adults is crucial in assessing any signs of cognitive disorders, dementia, falls and/or mortality. The use of continuous gait monitoring devices can aid in early interventions and risk detection in a frequent and accurate manner. The paper presents a study which utilizes an ultra-wide band (UWB) radar for gait speed detection. The experiment was performed on six healthy young individuals in three different speed categories i.e. slow, normal and fast. The speed measurements from the radar were then compared against the data gathered from a GAITRite mat (the gold standard commercial sensor-loaded mat for the detection of walking speed) to determine the accuracy of data acquired from the radar. © Institution of engineering and *** Rights Reserved.

This paper introduces the notion of cache-tapping into the information theoretic models of coded caching. The wiretap channel II in the presence of multiple receivers equipped with fixed-size cache memories, and an adversary which selects symbols to tap into from cache placement and/or delivery is introduced. The legitimate terminals know neither whether placement, delivery, or both are tapped, nor the positions in which they are tapped. Only the size of the overall tapped set is known. For two receivers and two files, the strong secrecy capacity– the maximum achievable file rate while keeping the overall library strongly secure– is identified. Lower and upper bounds on the strong secrecy file rate are derived when the library has more than two files. Achievability relies on a code design which combines wiretap coding, security embedding codes, one-time pad keys, and coded caching. A genie-aided upper bound, in which the transmitter is provided with user demands before placement, establishes the converse for the two-files case. For more than two files, the upper bound is constructed by three successive channel transformations. Our results establish provable security guarantees against a powerful adversary which optimizes its tapping over both phases of communication in a cache-aided system. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. Autonomous systems are able to make decisions and potentially take actions without direct human intervention, which requires some knowledge about the system and its environment as well as goal-oriented reasoning. In computer systems, one can derive such behavior from the concept of a rational agent with autonomy (“control over its own actions”), reactivity (“react to events from the environment”), proactivity (“act on its own initiative”), and sociality (“interact with other agents”) as fundamental properties \n[1]\n. Autonomous systems will undoubtedly pervade into our everyday lives, and we will find them in a variety of domains and applications including robotics, transportation, health care, communications, and entertainment to name a few. \nThe articles in this month’s special issue cover concepts and fundamentals, architectures and techniques, and applications and case studies in the exciting area of self-awareness in autonomous systems.

Networks are often made up of several layers that exhibit diverse degrees of interdependencies. An interdependent network consists of a set of graphs G that are interconnected through a weighted interconnection matrix B, where the weight of each intergraph link is a non-negative real number p. Various dynamical processes, such as synchronization, cascading failures in power grids, and diffusion processes, are described by the Laplacian matrix Q characterizing the whole system. For the case in which the multilayer graph is a multiplex, where the number of nodes in each layer is the same and the interconnection matrix B=pI, I being the identity matrix, it has been shown that there exists a structural transition at some critical coupling p*. This transition is such that dynamical processes are separated into two regimes: if p>p*, the network acts as a whole; whereas when psystems that deviate from the topological constraints imposed by multiplex networks.
