Medical image analysis has become a topic under the spotlight in recent years. There is a significant progress in medical image research concerning the usage of machine learning. However, there are still numerous questions and problems awaiting answers and solutions, respectively. In the present study, comparison of three classification models is conducted using features extracted using local binary patterns, the histogram of gradients, and a pre-trained deep network. Three common image classification methods, including support vector machines, decision trees, and artificial neural networks are used to classify feature vectors obtained by different feature extractors. We use KIMIA Path960, a publicly available dataset of 960 histopathology images extracted from 20 different tissue scans to test the accuracy of classification and feature extractions models used in the study, specifically for the histopathology images. SVM achieves the highest accuracy of 90.52% using local binary patterns as features which surpasses the accuracy obtained by deep features, namely 81.14%. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. Guidelines for managing scientific data have been established under the FAIR principles requiring that data be Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. In many scientific disciplines, especially computational biology, both data and models are key to progress. For this reason, and recognizing that such models are a very special type of "data", we argue that computational models, especially mechanistic models prevalent in medicine, physiology and systems biology, deserve a complementary set of guidelines. We propose the CURE principles, emphasizing that models should be Credible, Understandable, Reproducible, and Extensible. We delve into each principle, discussing verification, validation, and uncertainty quantification for model credibility;the clarity of model descriptions and annotations for understandability;adherence to standards and open science practices for reproducibility;and the use of open standards and modular code for extensibility and reuse. We outline recommended and baseline requirements for each aspect of CURE, aiming to enhance the impact and trustworthiness of computational models, particularly in biomedical applications where credibility is paramount. Our perspective underscores the need for a more disciplined approach to modeling, aligning with emerging trends such as Digital Twins and emphasizing the importance of data and modeling standards for interoperability and reuse. Finally, we emphasize that given the non-trivial effort required to implement the guidelines, the community moves to automate as many of the guidelines as possible. © 2025, CC BY.

The physical sensations of touch, as measured by the force and vibration felt during contact, strongly depend on the normal force exerted by the end-effector as well as its speed relative to the surface, factors we call 'scan-time parameters.' When researchers record surface interactions for machine learning tasks such as haptic surface recognition, they must either (1) precisely control these parameters, (2) record them alongside the rest of the data, or (3) develop postprocessing that makes surface percepts invariant to scan-time parameters. Here we use multi-class support vector machines to compare the second approach ('scan-dependent features' developed in our prior work) with the third approach ('scanfree features' developed by Strese et al.). We first verify our implementation of the scan-free features by testing on Strese et al.'s published dataset of 69 surfaces, achieving 87.4% crossvalidation accuracy. We then compare the two approaches on new surface interaction data gathered from 28 surfaces with our instrument (the Proton Pack), obtaining 57.9% accuracy using scan-dependent features and 93.3% accuracy using scan-free features, demonstrating superiority of the scan-free features for this task. We further calculate the correlation of all features to scan-time parameters, confirming that the scan-free features are relatively invariant to scan-time parameters. © 2017 IEEE.

This study introduces a proposed framework encompassing all pivotal sectors a municipality deals with contributing to sustainable development at a local level. This framework is tailor-made to fit into the Greek environment in which municipalities operate. Furthermore, by making use of an appropriate weighting method, considering the challenges of the working environment in Greek municipalities, the study proposes a specific methodology to better understand the policy priorities of municipalities. This information can be used to adjust and better align local policies with national strategies and with the needs and priorities of citizens.

Context: Combinatorial testing strategies have lately received a lot of attention as a result of their diverse applications. In its simple form, a combinatorial strategy can reduce several input parameters (configurations) of a system into a small set based on their interaction (or combination). In practice, the input configurations of software systems are subjected to constraints, especially in case of highly configurable systems. To implement this feature within a strategy, many difficulties arise for construction. While there are many combinatorial interaction testing strategies nowadays, few of them support constraints. Objective: This paper presents a new strategy, to construct combinatorial interaction test suites in the presence of constraints. Method: The design and algorithms are provided in detail. To overcome the multi-judgement criteria for an optimal solution, the multi-objective particle swarm optimisation and multithreading are used. The strategy and its associated algorithms are evaluated extensively using different benchmarks and comparisons. Results: Our results are promising as the evaluation results showed the efficiency and performance of each algorithm in the strategy. The benchmarking results also showed that the strategy can generate constrained test suites efficiently as compared to state-of-the-art strategies. Conclusion:The proposed strategy can form a new way for constructing of constrained combinatorial interaction test suites. The strategy can form a new and effective base for future implementations. The ability to measure the level of activity among older adults is crucial in assessing any signs of cognitive disorders, dementia, falls and/or mortality. The use of continuous gait monitoring devices can aid in early interventions and risk detection in a frequent and accurate manner. The paper presents a study which utilizes an ultra-wide band (UWB) radar for gait speed detection. The experiment was performed on six healthy young individuals in three different speed categories i.e. slow, normal and fast. The speed measurements from the radar were then compared against the data gathered from a GAITRite mat (the gold standard commercial sensor-loaded mat for the detection of walking speed) to determine the accuracy of data acquired from the radar.

Combinatorial interaction testing is an important software testing technique that has seen lots of recent interest. It can reduce the number of test cases needed by considering interactions between combinations of input parameters. Empirical evidence shows that it effectively detects faults, in particular, for highly configurable software systems. In real-world software testing, the input variables may vary in how strongly they interact;variable strength combinatorial interaction testing (VS-CIT) can exploit this for higher effectiveness. The generation of variable strength test suites is a non-deterministic polynomial-time (NP) hard computational problem [1]. Research has shown that stochastic population-based algorithms such as particle swarm optimization (PSO) can be efficient compared to alternatives for VS-CIT problems. Nevertheless, they require detailed control for the exploitation and exploration trade-off to avoid premature convergence (i.e. being trapped in local optima) as well as to enhance the solution diversity. Here, we present a new variant of PSO based on Mamdani fuzzy inference system [2, 3, 4], to permit adaptive selection of its global and local search operations. We detail the design of this combined algorithm and evaluate it through experiments on multiple synthetic and benchmark problems. We conclude that fuzzy adaptive selection of global and local search operations is, at least, feasible as it performs only second-best to a discrete variant of PSO, called DPSO. Concerning obtaining the best mean test suite size, the fuzzy adaptation even outperforms DPSO occasionally. We discuss the reasons behind this performance and outline relevant areas of future work. The use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for a wide variety of applications has been increasing during the latest years. For safe flying of UAVs, different types of obstacle sensing solutions towards collision avoidance have been presented. These solutions combine various types of on-board perception sensors to realize obstacle perception. Such sensors include optical cameras, infrared sensors, laser scanners, and ultrasonic sensors. The sensing capacity of these sensors determines the overall performance of the obstacle sensing solution. As a result, the selection of perception sensors becomes critical to achieving safe UAVs flights. This paper addresses a comparison overview study on the available low-cost obstacle sensing solutions for UAVs in wildlife environments. The cost, latency, precision, reliability, and performance across obstacles of different shapes, size, surfaces, and state (static or dynamic) in wildlife flying environments are of major concern. The main contribution of the paper includes the comparison on these critical aspects, followed by valuable recommendations on determining obstacle sensing solutions towards collision avoidance for wildlife UAVs. © 2017 IEEE.

This paper proposes a hybrid secondary control architecture for microgrids with AC-coupled droop-controlled units, based on both centralised and distributed control principles. The proposed secondary control is based on a multi-agent system (MAS), complemented by a microgrid centralised controller (MGCC). The system is able to adjust the droop curves dynamically in order to achieve voltage/frequency restoration as well as active/reactive power optimal allocation, based on the actual status of the controllable units, in particular, the state-of-charge of batteries and maximum power point of photovoltaics. The distributed nature of the agents is also fully exploited because the proposed framework retains operability even under fault on secondary MGCC. To evaluate the proposed framework, a scenario-based performance analysis has been tested over a simulated AC islanded microgrid, where communication from the MGCC is suddenly interrupted and the MAS is required to reconfigure in order to maintain the same control objectives. MATLAB/Simulink simulations have been realised using detailed physical form models for a small-scale microgrid, while the implementation of the MGCC and MAS is accomplished through Java Agent Development (JADE) framework.
