Enabling the vast computational and throughput requirements of future high performance computer systems and data centers requires innovative approaches. In this paper, we will focus on the communication between computer boards. One alternative to the bottleneck presented by copper wire based cable-bound communication is the deployment of wireless links between nodes consisting of processors and memory on different boards in a system. In this paper, we present an interdisciplinary approach that targets an integrated wireless transceiver for short-range ultra-high speed computer board-to-board communication. Based on our achieved results and current developments, we will also estimate energy consumption of such a transceiver. © 2015 IEEE.

CVXPY is a domain-specific language for convex optimization embedded in Python. It allows the user to express convex optimization problems in a natural syntax that follows the math, rather than in the restrictive standard form required by solvers. CVXPY makes it easy to combine convex optimization with high-level features of Python such as parallelism and object-oriented design. In this paper, by making use of virtual reality technology, motion sensors and cloud computing platform, we propose a cloud-based virtual training system for physical therapy, which enables a user to be trained by following a pre-recorded avatar instructor and getting real-time guidance using mobile device through wireless network. To evaluate the user's performance, we compare the motion data of the user and the pre-recoded avatar instructor. However, human reaction delay and network delay cause the data misalignment problem in the proposed cloud-based virtual training system. To align the motion data and evaluate the user's performance, we use Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) to calculate the similarity between the two sequences. Moreover, we propose a variant of the DTW algorithm we term Gesture-Based Dynamic Time Warping (GB-DTW) which segments the whole motion sequence and provides evaluation score for each gesture in real time. Experiments with multiple subjects under real network condition show that the proposed GB-DTW algorithm performs much better than other evaluation methods. To help the user calibrate his movements, the proposed system also provides visual and textual guidance for the user. © 2015 ACM.

Well known in the theory of network flows, Braess paradox states that in a congested network, it may happen that adding a new path between destinations can increase the level of congestion. In transportation networks the phenomenon results from the decisions of network participants who selfishly seek to optimize their own performance metrics. In an electric power distribution network, an analogous increase in congestion can arise as a consequence Kirchhoff's laws. Even for the simplest linear network of resistors and voltage sources, the sudden appearance of congestion due to an additional conductive line is a nonlinear phenomenon that results in a discontinuous change in the network state. It is argued that the phenomenon can occur in almost any grid in which they are loops, and with the increasing penetration of small-scale distributed generation, it suggests challenges ahead in the operation of microgrids.

The recent development of social services tightens wireless users’ social relationships and encourages them to generate more data traffic under network effect. This boosts the demand for wireless services yet may challenge the limited wireless capacity. To fully exploit this opportunity, we study mobile users’ data usage behaviors by jointly considering the network effect based on their social relationships in the social domain and the congestion effect in the physical wireless domain. Accordingly, we develop a Stackelberg game for problem formulation: In Stage I, a wireless provider first decides the data pricing to all users to maximize its revenue, and then in Stage II users observe the price and decide data usage subject to mutual interactions under both network and congestion effects. We analyze the two-stage game using backward induction. For Stage II, we first show the existence and uniqueness of a user demand equilibrium (UDE). Then we propose a distributed update algorithm for users to reach the UDE. Furthermore, we investigate the impacts of different parameters on the UDE. For Stage I, we develop an optimal pricing algorithm to maximize the wireless provider’s revenue. We evaluate the performance of our proposed algorithms by numerical studies using real data, and thereby draw useful engineering insights for the operation of wireless providers. Wireless power transfer (WPT) prolongs the lifetime of wireless sensor network by providing sustainable power supply to the distributed sensor nodes (SNs) via electromagnetic waves. To improve the energy transfer efficiency in a large WPT system, this paper proposes an adaptively directional WPT (AD-WPT) scheme, where the power beacons (PBs) adapt the energy beamforming strategy to SNs' locations by concentrating the transmit power on the nearby SNs within the efficient charging radius. With the aid of stochastic geometry, we derive the closed-form expressions of the distribution metrics of the aggregate received power at a typical SN. We analyze the optimal charging radius that maximizes the average received power. It is shown that both the optimal charging radius and maximized average received power decrease with the increased density of the SNs and the energy beamwidth. Finally, we show that the optimal AD-WPT can significantly improve the energy transfer efficiency compared to the traditional omnidirectional WPT.

This paper introduces an effective Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) based algorithm for solving Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP). Among prominent PSO based methods, the proposed Velocity Tentative PSO (VTPSO) considers Swap Sequence (SS) for velocity operation of the particles. A velocity SS is a collection of several Swap Operators (SOs) where each one indicates two positions in a tour those might be swapped. The existing methods apply all the SOs of the calculated SS on a solution to get a new solution. Conversely, the proposed VTPSO considers the calculated SS as the tentative velocity and checks the tentative solutions when applies the SOs one after another sequentially. The best tentative tour with a portion of SS is considered as the next solution point of a particle in VTPSO. Such intermediate tentative tour evaluation not only helps to get better solution but also reduces overall computational time. The experimental results on a large number of benchmark TSPs reveal that the proposed VTPSO is able to produce better tour compared to other prominent existing methods.

Scaling of Lyapunov functions has been a central tool in analysis and design of nonlinear systems. In this paper, the essence of some scaling techniques used extensively in the literature is reformulated in view of preservation of dissipation inequalities of integral input-to-state stability (iISS) and input-to-state stability (ISS). The iISS small-gain theorem is revisited from this viewpoint. Preservation of ISS dissipation inequalities is shown to not always be necessary, while preserving iISS which is weaker than ISS is convenient. By establishing relationships between the Legendre-Fenchel transform and the reformulated scaling techniques, this paper proposes a way to construct less complicated Lyapunov functions for interconnected systems. © 2015

Control software of autonomous robots has stringent real-time requirements that must be met to achieve the control objectives. One source of variability in the performance of a control system is the execution time and accuracy of the state estimator that provides the controller with state information. This estimator is typically perception-based (e.g., computer Vision-based) and is computationally expensive. When the computational resources of the hardware platform become overloaded, the estimation delay can compromise control performance and even stability. In this paper, we define a framework for co-designing anytime estimation and control algorithms, in a manner that accounts for implementation issues like delays and inaccuracies. We construct an anytime perception-based estimator from standard off-the-shelf computer Vision algorithms, and show how to obtain a trade-off curve for its delay vs estimate error behaviour. We use this anytime estimator in a controller that can use this trade-off curve at runtime to achieve its control objectives at a reduced energy cost. When the estimation delay is too large for correct operation, we provide an optimal manner in which the controller can use this curve to reduce estimation delay at the cost of higher inaccuracy, all the while guaranteeing basic objectives are met. We illustrate our approach on an autonomous hexrotor and demonstrate its advantage over a system that does not exploit co-design.

The problem of centralized scheduling of large scale charging of electric vehicles (EVs) by a service provider is considered. A Markov decision process model is introduced in which EVs arrive randomly to the charging facility with random demand and completion deadlines. The service provider faces random charging costs, convex non-completion penalties, and a peak power constraint that limits the maximum number of simultaneous activation of EV chargers. Formulated as a restless multi-armed bandit problem, the EV charging problem is shown to be indexable, thus low complexity index policies exist. A closed-form expression of the Whittle's index is obtained for the case when the charging costs are constant. The Whittle's index policy, however, is not optimal in general. An enhancement of the Whittle's index policy based on spatial interchange according to the less laxity and longer processing time (LLLP) principle is presented. The proposed policy outperforms existing charging algorithms, especially when the charging costs are dynamic.
